Ultra Low Frequency Digital Analyzer: Design and Construction

Braithwaite, David John 05 1900 (has links)

This thesis describes the development of an ultra low frequency digital analyzer from mathematical concepts and error characteristics set out in a publication^2 co-authored by the supervisor. The development is carried to the actual construction of a practical, economical, operating instrument, capable of giving information leading directly to the mean square value and the approximate amplitude probability distribution for ultra low frequency waveforms, both periodic and non-periodic. The final detailed design is described and justified, and the error characteristics derived in the above mentioned publication are interpreted for the design. No further development of principles or error characteristics is undertaken.
/ Thesis / Master of Engineering (MEngr)

The Design and Construction of a UHV Test System to Evaluate A Magnetron Pump-Gauge (Part B)

Cuthbert, John Richard 09 1900 (has links)
Second project report of two. Part A is available at http://hdl.handle.net/11375/17551 /
The design, construction, and initial operation of an ultra high vacuum testing system was undertaken. The final UHV system is equipped with a residual gas analyser (RGA).

The system was used to test a National Research Council of Canada magnetron pump-gauge. The pumping action of the device was adequate with speeds of litres/second for hydrogen and other chemically active species. A speed of ≃0.3 L/S was measured for methane (CH₄). The pressure measuring capabilities of this particular pump may be in question due to the presence of surface leakage currents.
/ Thesis / Master of Engineering (ME)

Communication Aids For Cerebral Palsied Children

Day, R. C. 09 1900 (has links)

This dissertation deals with the problems associated with the design and construction of communication aids for children with cerebral palsy. Attention is focused on an electronic communication board developed at the Ontario Crippled Children's Centre in Toronto which displays a matrix of Bliss symbols and English words that can be selected by appropriate activation of an interface which controls the sequential illumination of the symbol blocks. A number of interfaces were constructed. Appropriate electronic switching arrangements were incorporated with the interfaces in order to achieve activation of the interface upon the initiation of a movement rather than the maintaining of a position. The communication board was interfaced to a PDP 11-10 minicomputer which was used to provide a dual output of the word and associated Bliss symbol, selected using 'interface control, on a teletype and oscilloscope screen respectively.

Descriptions of associated communication type devices include an electronic attention getting device, page-turner interface, and programmed learning board.
/ Thesis / Master of Engineering (MEngr)

Part A: Thermal and Electrical Behaviour of Thin Metal Films; Part B: Implementation Accelerator System

Beatty, Denis Clyde 08 1900 (has links)
Part A: The preliminary investigation of the thermal and electrical behaviour of thin metal films gives evidence, Part I, that several mechanisms are responsible for the change of resistance as the temperature increases from room temperature to 500°C. Firstly, there appears grain growth giving a characteristic decrease in resistance. Secondly, the formation of agglomerates upon the continued growth of grains; especially for the thinner Al and Cr films. This effect tends to increase the resistance and a mathematical model is proposed to explain the results qualitatively. Thirdly, the occurrence of what appeared to be an electromigration effect. This latter point provided the incentive for a study on the effects of electromigration in thin aluminum film, Part II. The results of this study are comparable to those obtained by other workers, except that the interpretation for the direction of electromigration in Al is reversed. One possible explanation for the difference in the direction of migration could be due to the interpretation of marker motion. A mathematical model is also proposed for electromigration, in which both the effects due to the applied electric field and the electrons collision with the ions have been taken into consideration. It was found that the effect due to electrons collision with the ions upon the migration of ions could be expressed in terms of an exponential function of the square of the electron to ion collision relaxation time. / Thesis / Master of Engineering (ME)

The State of BIM-Based Quantity Take-Off Implementation Among Commercial General Contractors

Tagg, Morgan Christian 01 November 2017 (has links)
Building Information Modeling (BIM) plays an important role in today's construction industry. Models are tools that help stakeholders communicate, visualize building geometry, perform trade coordination and clash detection among others. A less popular aspect of BIM that shows high potential is the quantity take-off (QTO) feature. Yet, its implementation among commercial general contractors (GC) has not received as much attention. The purpose of this study was to identify how the BIM QTO features were being implemented among commercial general contractors, what challenges they faced and how they worked to overcome those challenges. Through a three-step process including semi structured interviews with estimators, preconstruction, BIM and Virtual Design Construction (VDC) managers, valuable insights on the BIM QTO implementation state among general contractors were gathered and analyzed. Links between BIM QTO benefits, project design phases and delivery methods, software, training, leadership and jurisdictions were discussed. The data indicated that BIM QTO's benefits were best leveraged through early general contractor involvement, the adequate contract framework, trained BIM QTO estimators, and early and strategic communication between owners, designers and estimators. The conditions for increased efficiency were discussed along with the solutions to the common BIM-based QTO challenges.

REDEFINING CONSTRUCTION “AS-BUILT” PLANS TO MEET CURRENT KENTUCKY TRANSPORTATION CABINET NEEDS

Lasley, Victoria Lynn 01 January 2019 (has links)
As-built drawings are the traditional method used by the construction industry to record changes made during construction. As-builts provide valuable information for new design projects as well as rehabilitation and remediation projects. The completeness and accuracy of these plans are essential for transportation industries and their success. While the importance of as-builts is widely recognized, the process of creating them has proven to be difficult. It is a time consuming process and entities often lack the resources necessary to complete accurate and detailed as-builts. After an investigation of current as-built operations within State Transportation Agencies, recommendations have been made to redefine construction "as-built" plans to meet current state transportation needs. First, the importance of a central storage location accessible to all stakeholders cannot be overemphasized. Along with a central storage location, standard guidelines should be developed regarding what information is required to be included within as-built plans. This study's approach to developing such guidelines included meeting with as-built end users and formulating a list of requested information. To ensure as-builts are being completed on time and accurately, it is recommended that as-built plans be developed throughout the project using simple to use editing software on iPads. A PDF editor is ideal for as-built development as PDF is the requested format by most end users. Finally, to ensure this process is being followed by construction, a liaison between as-built developers and users is recommended.
