The Management of Privacy Boundaries for People with Visible Disabilities

McAloon, Erin P. January 2014 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / People who have disabilities that are visible often manage the boundaries around private information regarding their disability (Braithwaite, 1991) because the choice becomes how much should be revealed. The purpose of this study is to use Communication Privacy Management (CPM) theory to explore the way people who have a visible disability manage privacy boundaries in communicative interactions and also the way the boundaries around private information are managed over time. The study was conducted through in-depth interviews with seven individuals who have a visible disability about their experiences in managing private information. The individuals described experiences both among other people with a visible disability and with people do not have a disability. Results from a thematic analysis revealed the presence of five main themes and several sub-themes.

The effects of exercise programming on health-related physical fitness of individuals with an intellectual disability : a meta-analysis of studies

Chanias, Angelos. January 1997 (has links)
A quantitative research synthesis (meta-analysis) was conducted to determine the effects of exercise on health-related physical fitness of people with an intellectual disability. While studies on this topic have been qualitatively reviewed (e.g., Fernhall, 1993; Fernhall, Tymeson, & Webster, 1988; Pitetti, Rimmeri & Fernhall, 1993), the effects of exercise on some of the health-related physical fitness components remains unclear, or unknown. Further, none of the reviews determined the influence of study characteristics on study outcomes. / The data were 24 studies yielding 104 effect sizes based on 826 subjects. / These analyses revealed that the outcomes of the studies related to cardiovascular endurance and muscular endurance were influenced by the variables of document source and length of program. More specifically, published studies produced significantly larger mean effect size than unpublished studies, and longer programs ($ ge$9 weeks) produced significantly larger mean effect size than shorter programs (58 weeks). Further it was found that the level of exercise frequency, influenced flexibility. More specifically, programs with higher exercise frequency ($>$3 times per week) produced significantly larger mean effect size than programs with lower exercise frequency (3 times per week). The attitude of the Tsonga community towards the cerebral palsied and the orthopaedically handicapped child

Baloyi, Busisiwe Helen 11 February 2014 (has links)
M.Ed. / Chapter One constitutes the heart of this study which entails the statement of the problem, prevailing attitudes and beliefs in the Tsonga community, attitudes and feelings of parents whose children are handicapped. This chapter also gives the aim, delimitation, method and plan of the study. Chapter Two elucidates what cerebral palsy and orthopaedic handicap are. It is a thought provoking and interesting chapter since it gives definitions, occurrence and causes of cerebral palsy and orthopaedic handicaps. Types of cerebral palsy such as spasticity, athetosis, rigidity, tremor and mixed type are clearly indicated. This also applies to orthopaedic handicap, where handicapism like poliomyelitis, dwarfism, tuberculosis of the spine, amputation of a limb or limbs, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, scoliosis, osteogenesis, rachitis, kwashiorkor and congenital deformities are discussed in detail. Cerebral palsy and orthopaedic handicap occur during four different stages, i. e. pre-natal, para-natal,neo-natal and post-natal stages . Chapter Three gives the traditional attitudes of the Tsonga communi ty towards cerebral palsied and orthopaedically handicapped children. The chapter first elucidates terms which also constitute the heart of this dissertation. It highlights the treatment of handicapped children by the ancient Greeks, Romans, Hebrews, and also the Sothos, Zulus and Tsongas...
