El siguiente trabajo de investigación tiene como finalidad exponer la relación existente entre el género y la configuración de personajes en dos películas (J'ai tué ma mère y Laurence Anyways) del director canadiense Xavier Dolan. Este trabajo cobra interés e importancia dentro de un marco social que ha revitalizado los estudios en lo referente al género, ya que existe la necesidad de conocer y entender a las variantes de género que siempre han existido. Se parte del objetivo general de analizar las otras identidades masculinas homosexuales y lo transgénero en ambas películas, como espacio para la confluencia de las diversas voces presentes en estos discursos fílmicos. Con esto se logrará describir masculinidades alternativas al canon, analizar la relación entre la masculinidad hegemónica, sus variantes y lo transgénero. El primer capítulo es una breve introducción al marco general en el cual queda inscrita esta investigación, tanto en el ámbito social como en el académico. El segundo capítulo es el desarrollo de los conceptos básicos utilizados en este trabajo. El tercero, refiere a la metodología empleada para la tesis y el cuarto y último capítulo es el análisis de las películas desde un punto de vista narrativo y visual. Este trabajo está dirigido a la comunidad académica y a las personas que encuentran necesario expandir el campo de investigación de los estudios de género. En esta oportunidad, nos enfocamos en los productos culturales y la relación que puede darse con la identidad de género, sus variantes y su desempeño para dar construcción a discursos fílmicos. / Tesis

The aim of this diploma thesis is to explore the way how the gender performativity is portrayed in Xavier Dolan's films. The theoretical part of the thesis first deals with the definition and theoretical grounding of gender performativity from the perspective of several authors, mainly Judith Butler. This part of the thesis will detailly introduce the concepts of gender performativity, which will be necessary for the analysis of the studied films. The theoretical part also presents the queer theory and the related chapter devoted to queer film, which would also include Dolan's work. Lastly, this part also includes a chapter devoted to the concept of mise-en-scène. The methodological part introduces the method of semiotic analysis and introduces the synopsis of the studied films. The analytical part of the work presents its own semiotic analysis of the examined films. The aim of the analytical part is to find out how Dolan works with gender performativity in his films and how it is visually portrayed.

The character of an urban void is defined by the built surrounding which determines the appearance and the function of the enclosed space. In modelling urban form, three major zones corresponding to this phenomenon may be distinguished: 1. Core 2. Transition Zone 3. Surrounding The transition zone contains the capacity to determine the prospective character of the framed void. It offers the possibility to intervene in the existing urban form, not by filling, but by emptying it. The void experiences a transformation from a neglected urban object to a clearly identified urban subject. This threshold towards the void serves as a mediating element between the two coexisting situations. It acts as a "coulisse" of an urban theater towards the void. / Master of Architecture

This master's thesis is an investigation into Xavier Dolan's depictions of queer and non-normative characters. Through close analyses of the director's first five films, this study identifies Dolan's recurring stylistics and narrative techniques, and how they relate to his cinematic representation of individuals who do not conform to society's norms. The question of how queer subjectivity is presented to the spectator of the films guides the study, which outlines different kinds of subjective images and ways of expressing the inner worlds of the protagonists. As one of the first extensive academic studies of Dolan in English, the thesis carries out a dialogue with the few existing scholarly sources on the filmmaker, while also employing theories put forward by Deleuze, Pasolini, Bonitzer and Foucault, among others. Whereas previous writings on Dolan have focused almost entirely on national aspects of his work – interpreting the films as typically Québécois – this study considers the filmmaker from an international perspective. Although being an auteur study, the thesis highlights current issues of queer self-representation and the voices of the marginalized, proposing that Dolan's work offers non-normative alternatives to heteronormative narrative structures, patriarchal storytelling conventions and traditional family constellations.
