Intermediate studies for the double bass player

Allen, Gene Thomas January 1981 (has links)
This dissertation is intended to fulfill a need for intermediate study material for the double bass. Studies that have been written, using twentieth century compositional techniques, are for the most part out of reach of the intermediate student. The extant contemporary studies extend the range of the instrument beyond the usual orchestral gamut and, combined with rapidly changing meters, rhythmic complexities, and new notation systems, tend to be studies for the more mature student of the double bass. The goals for the studies as instructional aids were (1) to select, arrange and create contemporary studies and pieces for the intermediate double bass player; and (2) to limit these studies to the lower gamut of the instrument and prepare the intermediate student for the technical and musical complexities that are a part of the extant studies for the more advanced student of double bass.Musical styles used are: jazz rhythms and harmonies, folk songs and dances, liturgical melody, classical suite and serial set.As an aid to understanding these studies and pieces, a tape recording of each study is an integral part of the dissertation. Included are two keyboard accompaniments and suggestions for the use of other instrumental combinations. It is hoped that some studies may be found appropriate for concert or recital performance.Study One is concerned with the performance problems of unbarred recitative and color usage. Ponticello, glissando, pizzicato, ricochet, tremolo and col legno are added to achieve color contrast in this study.Study Two consists of four traditional Greek songs. They are written in uneven meters of five and seven and combinations of two and three. Indication for rubato style, Bartok or "snap" pizzicato, portamento, and slurred pizzicato add to the performance problems of this study.Study Three is based on the entire melodic material of "Dies Irae". It is arranged in three settings: (1) improvised, (2) in tempo with guitar accompaniment, and (3) improvised with the use of natural harmonics. Other techniques employed are micro-tones and double stops.Study Four focuses on the problem of spiccato bowing. It is written in the tenor clef to advance reading ability. The piece may be played unaccompanied or with keyboard accompaniment.Study Five is a study in phrasing. It is an atonal work with piano accompaniment. and is based on a four-note set. The solo line, by transposition, eventually employs all of the tones of the chromatic scale.Study Six is designed as a study in pizzicato,. Pizzicato techniques are: slurred, drummed, left-hand, thumb, Bartok, arpeggiando and L. H. pizzicato semmre. The pitches are a combination of pressed tones and natural harmonics.Preceding each piece is a description or discussion of the technical problems peculiar to that study.

Nouveaux systèmes catalytiques bifonctionnels pour la silylcyanation asymétrique / New bifunctional catalytic systems for the asymmetric cyanosilylation

Ternel, Jérémy 20 September 2010 (has links)
New alkyl aluminium complexes supported by potentially tridentate, highly tunable chiral ligands of the phenolato-imino-sulfonamide type (PISA) were synthesized and characterized. In the view of developping cleaner chemical processes, new hybrid materials were prepared by immobilization of aluminum, ytterbium and zinc complexes onto silica. These molecular and supported species have been used in enantioselective silylcyanation of aldehydes and ketones in the presence of a Lewis base. Excellent conversions and selectivities were achieved for a broad scope of substrates.Mecanistic aspects of this type of bifunctional catalytic systems have also been studied.

Etude du rôle des protéines de la famille PPR doublement adressées à la mitochondrie et au plaste dans l'édition de l'ARN chez Arabidopsis thaliana / Role of PPR proteins dually targeted to mitochondria and chloroplast in the RNA edition process in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Lopez Obando, Mauricio 06 May 2014 (has links)
Mitochondrial and plastid are essential organelles within the plant cell. The process of RNA metabolism such as transcription, post-transcriptional modifications as splicing and editing and translation are very similar in these organelles. Among the actors of these processes, the PentatricoPeptide Repeat (PPR) proteins have an important role. In this research, firstly, I assessed the dual localisation of PPR proteins to mitochondria and chloroplasts organelles in Arabidopsis thaliana. The synthesis of all the data, those produced during my thesis, those available in the literature and those contained in the proteomic databases have revealed that between the 473 members of the PPR family in A. thaliana, 9 % are potentially dually localaized in both organelles. A part of this thesis analyzes and discusses the evolutionary and functional implications of this class of localisation in the PPR family. In order to understand the activity of PPR proteins in both organelles, I focused my work in the functional analysis on four PPR proteins (OTP90, OTP91, OTP100 and DYW2 ) potentially involved in the editing process. Although functional characterization of these four proteins has not been fully completed, in this thesis, I was able to demonstrate that the OTP90 and DYW2 proteins act on editing of organelles transcripts and particularly I found that the DYW2 protein participates in the editing of chloroplast and mitochondrial transcripts. Thus, the results of my research are in concordance to recent data obtained by the world, showing that PPR proteins have complex roles influencing several transcripts and/or processes in the RNA metabolism of organelles.

Astrometric observations of wide southern double stars

Bauer, Christina, University of Western Sydney, Nepean, Faculty of Science and Technology January 1995 (has links)
Observations were made of 309 binary systems between RA 17h - 07h and Dec -70 degrees to -60 degrees. The images were calibrated against pairs measured for CCD astometry. Measurements were made of separations, position angles and differential magnitudes. Uncertainties in position angle and separation were 7.8o/p and 0.16 arcseconds respectively. The position angles, separations and differential V magnitudes were compared with WDS figures. It was determined that only 29% _+ 5% of the observed pairs had undergone significant movement since the last previous measurement, which agrees with the results of a survey of the WDS. A statistical study of 1q77 pairs found that the spread of calculated separations agreed with those found by other authors, while the distribution of periods, while falling within the range(s) calculated by other authors, were significantly longer. A short-arc fitting program was tested using data derived from the published orbit of Centauri before being applied to seven observed pairs. Orbits could be calculated for six of the seven pairs. For four of these pairs the observed movement may be due to proper motion rather than orbital motion / Master of Science (Hons)
