Nomadology in architecture : ephemerality, movement and collaborationCowan, Gregory John. January 2002 (has links) (PDF)
Bibliography: leaves 138-149. This thesis investigates the theoretical and practical importance of nomadic ways of life for architecture. Nomadology is a construction of Deleuze and Gattari's 'counter-philosophy' challenging authenticity and propriety, in this case, in the context of architecture. It describes how nomadology may challenge static, permanent, heroically solitary ways of working and dwelling, and suggests strategies - diagramming, ephemerality, movement, and collaboration - as ways of reconciling nomadism and architecture.

The realm of dreams and realityAkyurek, Cagla January 1993 (has links)
We all have desires- dreams and goals that beg to be realized at some future date. When such desires are so strong that their creation becomes a quest, they take on a hazy quality that place them between the realm of dream and reality.Where does THE REALITY stop?Where does THE DREAM begin? The realm between dreams and reality Is very difficult to grasp.I have created a word that for me, expresses the realm of dreams and reality: This in between state will be called a 'DREALM'.This creative project Is a study of my 'DREALM'. It may or may not come true.Or,Is there really something called Real? Are they all just IMAGES?IMAGES,that We createorthat WE spend all our lives to create. / Department of Architecture

The importance of incorporating building science knowledge into guidelines to improve environmental sustainability in the rehabilitation of existing residencesHamm, Karen L. January 2006 (has links)
This thesis examines existing rehabilitation and environmental guidelines to determine whether the guidelines are incorporating the necessary building science knowledge to ensure that insulation is performing as intended and thus promoting energy efficiency, cost effectiveness, and environmental sustainability. The results of analyzing the existing guidelines show that they do not require all that is necessary to promote energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. While several of the guidelines have started to incorporate the necessary building science perspective by requiring a whole house air leakage test, none of the guidelines examined specifically require the zonal pressure diagnostics test necessary to ensure that insulation is working to specification. The thesis also includes a comprehensive overview of environmental sustainability and rehabilitation. / Department of Urban Planning

The evolution of prefabricated interior components for post-occupancy modification /Ou, Yangli, 1968- January 1999 (has links)
In recent years, home modification has played an increasingly important role in the housing industry. Expenditures on renovation have consistently exceeded those spent on new home construction during the 1990s. And it has huge potential to continuously increase in the years to come. Renovators' do-it-yourself activities are efficient ways to fulfill homeowners' psychological and physical needs and save expensive labour costs. / This research investigates not only the technology evolution of ten products and the installation processes that are frequently used by renovators, but also the fundamental reasons that drive the development of these innovations. It covers the technology from the beginning of this century to the latest innovations developed by manufactures in the 1990s. Additionally, it documents recent national and Quebec renovation market trends, together with three post-occupancy studies which had been conducted in the Montreal Area. / The study reveals that many of the products and installation process have been greatly simplified and innovations in the renovation market could benefit renovators by allowing them to undertake modifications themselves. Also, the author suggests certain guidelines for increasing housing affordability and new products development.
