The morphology and histochemistry of the life history of Eimeria Libeana Pinto, 1928

Srivastava, Hirendra Kumar January 1964 (has links)
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University / PLEASE NOTE: Boston University Libraries did not receive an Authorization To Manage form for this thesis or dissertation. It is therefore not openly accessible, though it may be available by request. If you are the author or principal advisor of this work and would like to request open access for it, please contact us at open-help@bu.edu. Thank you. / The study was undertaken with the purpose of redescribing the life history stages of E. labbeana and working out the histochemistry of different stages. Freshly discharged oocysts were of two sizes, large and small. Each oocyst possessed an outer transparent membrane, a thick intermediate membrane, and a thin inner membrane. The cytoplasm was in a state of flow and the nucleus appeared as a halo. Oocysts with incompletely formed walls and degenerate oocysts were also found to be shed along with mature oocysts. Biometrical studies indicated that the "ideal" size of the oocyst was 19.2u ± 0.27u x 17 . 5u ± 0.21u. There was no special difference in the size of the oocyst early and late in the patent period. Observation of sporogony at room temperature revealed that the first change in freshly discharged oocysts took place after 9 to 9 1/2 hours when protoplasm was withdrawn to a globular form. One to three polar bodies arose from any point. After 20 to 21 1/2 hours sporoblasts appeared abruptly. The first division was longitudinal and the second transverse. At about 33 hours sporoblasts changed to sporocysts. At about 59 hours the cytoplasm of sporocysts divided to form 5 refractile globules. The sporocyst had a double wall, the inner one reaching up to the base of the Stieda body. Two refractile globules (future sporozoites) were at either end. The average length and width of the sporocyst was 12.4u ± 0.34u X 6.4u ± 0.08u.[TRUNCATED] / 2031-01-01

Prevalencia de Eimeria sp. en alpacas de dos comunidades del distrito de macusani, provincia Carabaya – Puno

Camareno Huamán, Elizabeth January 2015 (has links)
--- The aim of this study was to estimate the prevalence of Eimeria in alpacas of two communities of the Macusani district, Carabaya province, Puno, during the dry season. Additionally, estimate if the variables: origin, age (5m-<1 year, 1-3 years, >3 years) and sex are risk factors for the presentation of Eimeria spp. in alpacas; and we identify load and species of eimerias.1319 coprological samples were collected from huacaya alpacas, 598 of Hatun Phinaya community and 721 of Queracucho community during August and October 2010. They were evaluated using qualitative techniques such as sedimentation and flotation with sheather and willis solutions, the quantification of load was performed using the modified Mcmaster method and for identification species of eimerias was done by oocyst sporulation and measurement. The results showed a prevalence of 52.4% for Eimeria spp. Risk analysis was done by multiple logistic regresion test. It was founded that only age variable was a risk factor (p<0.05) for the presentation of eimerias, alpacas of 5 meses -<1 year and 1 - 3 years respectively had 13.2 and 2.4 times risker found infected to Eimeria spp. than over three years.. It was identified five eimeria species in alpacas, Prevalence of E. macusaniensis and Eimeria ivitaensis were 8.7 and 0.7 % respectively. Between small species (Eimeria punoensis, E. alpacae, E. lamae), the highest percent was presented by Eimeria punoensis (66.2%). The parasitic load of eimeria was considered low (187.8 opg). These findings confirm that eimeriosis is an inminent healthy problem in alpacas of two communities of Macusani. Keywords: alpacas, eimeria, prevalence, Macusani, dry season / Tesis

Influence of dietary composition on coccidiosis vaccination efficacy in broilers

Lee, Jason Thomas 25 April 2007 (has links)
This research program included a series of experiments to investigate the effect of starter diet protein level on the performance of broilers vaccinated with Coccivac®-B and subsequently challenged with a mixed species Eimeria challenge compared to nonvaccinated broilers. Pre-challenge performance data indicates that vaccination may decrease body weights and increase feed conversion ratio (FCR) with vaccination. The time period associated with the observed effects is between 13 to 17 d of age. This reduction in performance of vaccinated broilers versus non-vaccinated broilers was eliminated by the conclusion of the experiments (27 d) in the higher protein diets. Vaccination was effective at generating protective immunity against the Eimeria challenge evidenced by significantly increased body weight gains, improved feed conversions, reduced post-challenge mortality, and reduced lesion development in vaccinated broilers compared to non-vaccinated. The final experiment included the comparison of Coccivac®-B to Bio-Cox® (salinomycin) for controlling field strain Eimeria in broilers reared on two different dietary rations varying in protein concentration. Diet A had a lower protein concentration than Diet B. On day 14, Eimeria collected from commercial broiler farms in Texas were spray applied to the litter in all pens. Broilers reared on Diet B were heavier at Day 40 while body weights at day 50 were similar for all groups. Broilers fed Diet B had lower FCR during the starter and finisher diets. Broilers fed salinomycin had lower FCR for the starter and grower diets while vaccinated broilers had lower FCR during the withdrawal period. Cumulative FCR for the entire grow out period were similar for all groups. These data indicate that vaccination can be utilized as an anticoccidial preventive and are suggestive that reduced protein concentration of starter diets can lead to significant losses in broiler performance when utilizing a vaccination program to prevent coccidiosis. Feeding an appropriately formulated diet while vaccinating broilers with Coccivac®-B as an alternative to the use of salinomycin yields at least equivalent if not elevated performance in the presence of field-strain Eimeria during grow-out with no effect on the cost of production.
