The vulnerability of electrical cables exposed to a fire environment is of particular concern to the nuclear power plant community. The community is interested in data that could be used for predicting cable failures during a fire situation. For this reason, a cable test program was conducted using two different types of cable insulation. Several different exposure heat fluxes were tested, as well as different test arrangements such as cable trays and conduits. The program revealed that a single failure temperature for all cable types is not recommended, but if it is necessary a reasonable temperature could be chosen for the thermosets tested in this project.

A statistical method for establishing insulated cable clearances in large power transformersLanoue, Thomas J. January 1975 (has links)
The relationship between impulse breakdown stress and stressed oil volume has been extensively investigated for uniform field electrodes. In large high voltage transformers it is essential to extend this relationship to paper insulated non-uniform field situations which are more frequently encountered in practice. This paper develops the stated relationship by experimental tests, using insulated cable to plane configurations, and statistical methods. These tests show that the impulse breakdown strength of an insulated cable to plane or nonuniform field system has a two parameter Weibull distribution, when the oil is considered to be the weak-link of the system. A non-linear regression analysis is then used to find that the Weibull parameters for insulated non-uniform field electrodes are approximately the same as the parameters for the uninsulated uniform field electrodes provided their stressed oil volumes are equivalent. Statistical calculations are used to derive the fundamental relationship between the Weibull parameters for any stressed oil volume and the Weibull parameters for the unit oil volume. With this relationship it is possible for design engineers to approximately determine the probability of electrical breakdown of any insulated cable to plane configuration in large power transformers.

The thesis constitutes a systematic theoretical and experimental investigation into impulse breakdown voltage-time curves of coaxial-cylinder gaps in SF(,6) and a 50% SF(,6) - 50% N(,2) mixture. The breakdown time delay probability is treated as a bivariate distribution in statistical and formative time lags. A method is developed to deduce the marginal breakdown voltage probability curve from statistics of time delay. The experimental work was performed on 2.54/7.0-cm diameter, 60-cm long coaxial-cylinder electrodes using SF(,6) or SF(,6)-N(,2) mixtures at pressures of 0.1 - 0.3 MPa subjected to 0.5/50-(mu)s and 1.2/50-(mu)s impulses of both polarities. The effect of a spherical conducting particle attached to the central electrode of the coaxial-cylinder gap on the voltage-time characteristics is also investigated.

ADLash® is the trade name for an optical fibre cable attached to a transmission line shield wire using aramid-reinforced bands. The installation of this type of optic fibre cable has been considered for the HVDC line from the Songo hydroelectric scheme at Cahora Bassa in Mozambique, to Apollo substation in South Africa. The impact that installation of this cable will have on the onset of corona is examined. The shield wire with and without ADLash attached is modelled for both the actual line configuration and for corona cage studies. The electric field is calculated using the Method of Images and the Boundary Element Method to predict the electric field enhancements and to estimate the corona onset gradient. Corona onset gradients and phenomena for smooth and stranded conductors are researched to aid the prediction of voltage onset magnitudes for the corona cage. Estimated values are compared with observed values for both AC and DC applied voltages. Different patterns of corona and different corona onset voltages are observed for AC and negative DC applied voltages. The relative permittivity of the ADLash is higher than the surrounding air and this is shown to lead to greatly enhanced electric fields at the air/ dielectric/ shield wire interfaces that are significant enough to cause corona at the rated operating voltage. The corona will bombard the ADLash and probably damage it. Some alternative methods of installing fibre optic cables are reviewed for further research because the use of ADLash cannot be recommended. / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 2005.
