Cette thèse se propose d’éclairer le rapport entre épopée et imagination qui se développe de manière singulière à partir du romantisme. Elle s’appuie pour cela sur une confrontation des oeuvres de Victor Hugo (Notre-Dame de Paris et La Légende des siècles) et de J.R.R. Tolkien (Le Livre des contes perdus, Les Lais du Beleriand et Le Seigneur des anneaux) avec la tradition épique occidentale, déclinée en une histoire des modèles du genre, en prenant en compte la spécificité de l’époque moderne dans cette chaîne. Dans cette perspective, cette recherche se fonde sur les résultats de nouveaux types d’approche (philosophique, sociologique, anthropologique et philologique) du genre épique pendant cette période et, en particulier, sur une conception récemment mise en évidence à partir d’un corpus de textes canoniques : les épopées, caractérisées par une forme populaire et souple, ouverte sur des prolongements et transpositions, remplissent au sein d’une société la fonction de réfléchir et de problématiser, dans le cadre narratif, les crises que celle-ci traverse, favorisant ainsi l’émergence de nouvelles configurations du monde. En partant d’oeuvres des dix-neuvième et vingtième siècles, nous proposons d’interpréter cette invention d’organisations politiques inédites, que réalise le travail épique, en termes de jaillissement de nouvelles significations du monde. Il apparaît alors possible de distinguer un nouveau modèle d’épopées, répondant à un problème spécifique de l’époque moderne : le désenchantement entendu comme perte du sens. En érigeant en un régime de l’oeuvre l’exploitation des ressources de l’imaginaire, ces épopées donnent à voir un monde signifiant. Elles créent ainsi pour le lecteur les conditions d’une possibilité du sens, préalables à toute orientation de ce dernier. / This dissertation sets out to highlight the relationship between the epic genre and imagination as it begins to unfold anew from the Romantic period on. To that purpose, this study compares and contrasts works from Victor Hugo (Notre-Dame de Paris and La Légende des siècles) and from J.R.R. Tolkien (The Book of Lost Tales, The Lays of Beleriand and The Lord of the Rings) with the Western epic tradition, presented as an on-going history of models. Within this generic chain, special attention is given to the specific features of modern times. From this perspective, the present research lies on recent findings and new approaches to the epic genre of that period, whether in philosophy, sociology, anthropology, or philology. In particular, it elaborates on a conception recently established from a body of canonical texts, according to which epic works – of flexible and popular forms, readily transposed and extended –, do perform within a given society the functions of reflecting and problematizing, within the narrative framework, the crises experienced by this society, thus allowing new configurations of the world to emerge. Reading from nineteenth- and twentieth- century literary works, I propose to interpret the epic creation of these innovative political frameworks as an outpouring of new meanings into the world. It then becomes possible to establish a new epic model that answers a specific question encountered by modernity: disenchantment understood as the process of losing meaning and purpose. Considering the appeal to imagination as an operation in its own right, such epic works provide views of a world that makes sense; thus they create for the reader the very possibility of meaning, even prior to assigning any specific determination to that meaning.
