The Role of Leaders in AVID Schools and the Impact on Student AchievementNoone, Colleen Callahan 14 January 2011 (has links)
The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program is designed to provide resources and strategies to enable underrepresented minority students to attend four-year colleges. Research indicates that the success of the students enrolled in AVID depends on the strict adherence to the AVID components. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the principal and administrator's understanding of, commitment to and involvement in AVID accounted for the difference in student achievement between a successful school and one that is not.
AVID is a program with demonstrated results, however it is costly. Building principals have to be willing to use a teaching position to staff the AVID coordinator/teacher position, and school districts have to employ tutors for the twice-weekly tutorial sessions. In these difficult fiscal times, districts are looking for places to make adjustments. AVID's demonstrated effectiveness for students in an individual building, as well as district-wide, will be the key to keeping AVID from falling subject to budget cuts.
Some of AVID's 11 essentials are instructionally based, such as Cornell Notes and WICR, which directly impact what occurs within the walls of the classroom. Others are more leadership-based, such as staffing and policies for student selection. Yet a third set consists of things which are not actually essentials or may be less tangible, but still have a great impact on AVID, such as the perception of AVID students by peers, the perception of AVID students by the school community in general, and the understanding and oversight of the program within the building. This study focused on the essentials that are leadership based as well as those which are less tangible. It is essential to know what factors in a school make AVID implementation meet with the greatest success.
A comparative case study methodology was used. The study used Grade Point Averages to determine two focus schools, and then interviews with principals and AVID administrators was conducted and analyzed. This study demonstrated that the key person in any site is the administrator who directly oversees the program. This individual must be thoroughly trained in all aspects of AVID so that program essentials can by implemented according to AVID guidelines and decisions regarding student success are based on accurate information.
Assessment of program implementation is a multi-level process. In order to get an accurate picture of a program implemented in multiple schools, it is essential to first be sure that implementation is uniform within a specific building. Schools that have more than one teacher implementing a program must be monitored to be sure that there is a uniform practice within the building. Those involved with program oversight need to start there, especially if grades are being used as a basis of comparison. / Ed. D.

Why are there so few minimum service level agreements? A case study of a metropolitan municipality.Ronnie, Roger 22 January 2020 (has links)
In terms of the South African Constitution, every worker has the right to strike. This right is regulated in the Labour Relations Act. Workers engaged in essential services are prohibited from striking. The prohibition does not apply if a minimum service level agreement, guaranteeing services in the event of a strike, has been concluded between employers and trade unions. The Essential Services Committee, established under the Labour Relations Act ( the Act), must ratify these agreements before they become effective. More than two decades after the LRA was promulgated, very few ratified minimum service level agreements have been concluded in the municipal sector. This study explores the reasons for this and suggests legislative and policy interventions that could be considered on a sector wide basis. The study is by way of a single-case study of a metropolitan municipality. Data were obtained from two sources: 14 semi-structured interviews with participants and from an analysis of documents relevant to the regulation of essential services. The study established that the legislative framework for regulating essential services in South Africa is consistent with the principles and decisions laid down by the International Labour Organisation. It however does not provide guidelines for determining minimum service levels. An apparent unevenness between the representatives of the negotiating counterparts exists in the municipal sector in South Africa. Many of the party representatives negotiating minimum service levels, do not work in designated essential services or possess relevant technical skills. The findings of the study suggest steps that could be taken to strengthen the capacity of the Essential Services Committee to assist parties in the municipal sector to conclude minimum service agreements and build the negotiating capacity of the parties. The study also makes recommendations regarding improved participation by essential service workers and the broader community in the process.

An Evaluation of Teaching Practice in the Minimum Essentials of English Through Grades Six to Twelve in the Schools of Cache County, UtahPerkins, W. Wendell 01 May 1934 (has links)
National English Committees insist that composition content is of first importance; organization of ideas, second; and form third. The writer agrees with this point of view, but believes that a large proportion of class time in English, all through the grades, is spent in trying to establish knowledge and skill in the use of grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and mechanics generally.

Estudo de caracteres silviculturais e de produção de óleo essencial de progênies de Corymbia citriodora (Hook) K.D.Hill & L.A.S. Johnson procedente de Anhembi SP - Brasil, Ex. Atherton QLD - Austrália. / Evaluation of silvicultural variables and essential oil production of Corymbia citriodora (hook) k. d. hill & l. a. s. johnson progenies at Anhembi provenance, SP Brasil, ex. atherton, qld Austrália.Vieira, Israel Gomes 07 October 2004 (has links)
Corymbia citriodora is an important species among aromatic plants. It is a multipurpose species cultivated by small and intermediate farmers, which makes Brazil the largest world producer of essential oils obtained from leaves. Therefore, the study of genetic variations of the silvicultural variables and the oil production characteristics are necessary for the selection of desirable materials for a tree-breeding program. The main objective was to evaluate a C.citriodora population from Atherton QLD, Australia regarding the morphological characteristics of selected trees and superior progenies, their leaf biomass production, essential oil yield and citronelal content. The experiment was settled in February 2003, at Anhembi Forest Experimental Station, at Anhembi, SP, which belongs to the University of Sao Paulo and is managed by the the Forest Sciences Department of the "Luiz de Queiroz" Superior Agriculture College. The statistical design was completely randomised blocks, with progenies from 45 selected trees of a basic population from Atherton, QLD Australia. Ten-plants linear plots were used, with 3 repetitions, on 3 x 2 m spacing. At 11 months-old, survival rate, total height, leaf-biomass production, essential oil yield, and the citronelal content of the progenies was determined. Results demonstrated that: a) plant height growth was excellent, leading to a earlier first leaf harvesting; b) the progenies showed low genetic variation related to the characteristics evaluated; c) leaf production showed high selection gains; d) average of progenies selection is recommended for plant height, leaf production and oil yield. An evaluation of individuals is better for citronelal content selection; e) morphology of seeds fromselect trees, leaves and pilos of seedlings can help the selection of desirable materials; f) use of a rank system based on multiple variables is efficient for selection of desirable materials; g) the studied population showed, on average, a greater oil potential than others populations currently used in Brazil for essential oil production.

The problem in a middle eastern school was the high annual rate of teacher attrition, which is above 25% per year. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine teacher perceptions of the attrition rates as they relate to the school leadership style at this study site. Herzberg's theory of motivation, which provides insights regarding job satisfaction, served as the conceptual framework that guided this study. The research questions were developed to examine teacher perceptions about administrative influences on teachers' job satisfaction and the programs and services they believe may enhance morale. A case study design was used to capture the insights of 10 purposefully selected teachers from the target school to conduct semi-structured interviews. Emergent themes were identified through open coding, and the findings were developed and checked for trustworthiness through member checking and a process to identify convergence and divergence. The findings revealed that participants preferred leadership styles that were supportive, and they placed a high value on teacher input. A professional development program was designed to educate participants on the connection between leadership styles and teacher attrition. This program may contribute to positive social change by guiding educational leaders to establish an enhanced learning environment that is responsive to the social, cultural, and ethnic differences of the teachers in the middle east.

Impact of Training on Parent Knowledge and BehaviorBearden, Donald J 23 June 2009 (has links)
Immunizations are an essential part of children’s healthcare; however, the associated distress can have short- and long-term negative ramifications for children. Parents’ procedural behavior is one of the strongest predictors of children’s distress. The current study evaluated whether an interactive computer training program influenced parents’ knowledge of the impact that their behavior has on their children or their actual procedural behavior during children’s immunizations. 90 parents and their 4- to 6-year-old children receiving immunizations participated. Overall, findings suggest that using a computerized training module to enhance parent knowledge and behavior is helpful but requires improvements in some areas to optimize training.

Materiální ohnisko Ústavy / The material core of the ConstitutionBělocký, Jan January 2011 (has links)
The material core of the Constitution - Abstract This thesis is about the relation between the state of the Czech Republic and Czech and Czechoslovakian constitutional area. The deciding impulse leading to the elaboration of this topic was historically the first derogation of constitutional act by the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic. The reason of the groundbreaking judgement was the conflict of the challenged constitutional act and the material core of the Constitution which protects its democratic frame. The aim of the thesis is to explore the form, content and protection of the most important constitutional base of the Czech Republic, i.e. the imperative of inflexibility of the democratic state law material attributes. The way how to deal with that is to review historical and revolutionary changes of the legal state principle. The first part of the thesis concentrates on fundamental historical events which resulted in the reversal of the legal state concept. In the terms of constitutional sources of law it analyzes the formation of the democratic Czechoslovakia, the wartime period of submission and the restoration of legal order after the Second World War, the Communist takeover in February and the Ninth-of-May (1948) Constitution, the Socialist Constitution, the Prague Spring, the Manifesto...
