Audio and visual self-confrontation in psychotherapy / Visual self-confrontation in psychotherapy.

Holbrook, William Michael January 1982 (has links)
The current literature on audio and visual self-confrontation has suggested its usefulness as a therapeutic tool in promoting increased self-awareness, movement toward greater psychological health, with the obvious by-product of shorter length of psychological care - a matter of no little import in a time of decreased spending in the area of mental health. In the review of the literature no studies could be found which used a control group and compared audio with visual playback. It was decided to use Huff's (1966) study as a basic format to explore the issue, but to modify it by using video feedback as one of the treatments rather than having the client listen to a tape of a third party being counseled. This was done not only because of the advances in the field of video communications, but also because of perceived ethical problems in treating one client's sessions in a quasi-public manner with non-professionals which also appears to be involved with anonymity and confidentiality issues. This research was undertaken then, to determine whether there is a differential effect on psychological health due to three conditions (Treatment I - psychotherapy and audio self-confrontation, Treatment II - psychotherapy and video self-confrontation, Control - psychotherapy alone) as measured by two psychometric instruments. Thirty subjects from the Ball State Practicum Clinic participated and were assigned in a quasi-random fashion to one of the three groups. Subjects were pre-tested, treated for four sessions, and then post-tested.Statistical analysis on the pre-test of the-semantic differential developed by Huff in his earlier study were performed to determine reliability. Four concepts were retained due to indication of sufficient reliability. One score - the GSI (Global Severity Index) on the SCL-90 (Symptom Check List) was utilized, due to author indication of it being the best general indicator of the overall level of distress. Within-group correlations were calculated for any intercorrelations among variables. Two moderate correlations were found, the rest were independent. Finally, a multivariate analysis of variance was computed to determine treatment effectiveness. 0.09 significance was found which did not allow rejection of the null hypothesis that the means of the two psychometric instruments (five measures considered simultaneously) for the three groups will not differ significantly.

The experience of critical self-reflection by life coaches : a phenomenological study

Shaw, Deanna L. 21 July 2012 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to describe the experience of critical self-reflection by life coaches. Life coaching is expanding within many disciplines including education, health care, business, social work, and wellness. Life coaching involves a coach working with an individual or groups aimed at effecting change for professional and personal development. This study addresses the gap in understanding the experience of critical self-reflection in the coaches’ practice. This was a qualitative study grounded in the phenomenology method. Data was collected from certified life coaches who were purposively sampled from referrals by certified life coaches within the United States. Data was collected from the participants through the use of critical incident questionnaires (CIQ), journal summaries, and a semi-structured final interview. The epoche phenomenological analysis was utilized to analyze the generated narratives (i.e., data). The results of the analysis emerged five themes (1) structure and discipline, (2) increased self awareness, (3) passionate purpose, (4) professional development, and (5) enhanced relationships with self and others. The findings revealed critical self-reflection provided an introspective self-analysis for the coaches to enhance and expand their coaching skills including presence, powerful questions, listening, strategic interventions, and self-management. The coaches identified increased energy for themselves between coaching sessions after completing the CIQ, which provided a mechanism to slow down, focus, and prepare for each coaching session. The focused attention on the coach’s behaviors, thoughts, and actions led to the coach’s increased awareness of how to redirect and course correct before and during a coaching session. This redirection and focus created a deeper connection with their clients. The coaches recommended critical self-reflection be taught in coach training schools and become a regular practice within the coach’s professional development. / Department of Educational Studies

Evaluating community development programs: who speaks? who listens? who cares?

Redekop, Jaclyn 11 September 2013 (has links)
Different types of evaluations, including utilization-focused, participatory, collaborative, and empowerment, have commonly been used to evaluate community development programs. None, however, appear to be entirely suited to community development programming due to the varying levels of stakeholder participation in the evaluation process. The purpose of this study was to understand how program evaluation can support community development programming. The evaluation processes of two programs operated by the Sexuality Education Resource Centre (SERC) were examined through semi-structured interviews, document analysis and participant observation. Findings showed that SERC successfully implemented evaluations that enhanced and supported community development programming through the development of strong partnerships with the community. The thesis provides additional strategies within a community development framework to highlight practices that may be useful for other community development programs.

Applying Public Relations Theory to Assess Service-Learning Relationships

Strand, Karen 23 May 2014 (has links)
<p> In Service-Learning (S-L) partnerships, universities and community organizations exchange resources and influence. Community engagement scholars Cruz and Giles proposed that relationships within S-L partnerships serve as units of analysis for the study of community outcomes of engagement. Yet, the scholarship of engagement lacks a suitable instrument to assess such relationships. This study brings together two lines of scholarship-relationship studies within community engagement and cocreational studies within public relations-to address the problem of assessing the community outcomes of S-L relationships, and it applies Cruz and Giles' ideas about using relationship analysis to assess community outcomes when it considers the perspectives of representatives of nonprofit organizations relative to their relationships with S-L students. Specifically, this qualitative study applies public relations theory to the problem of assessing project-based S-L relationships.</p>

Four Essays on Using Economic Analysis to Evaluate Canadian Public Policy

Chandler, VINCENT 30 May 2014 (has links)
The first essay shows the presence of discrimination in the allocation of doctoral scholarships using a unique dataset containing the 1901 recipients of 2004-2005 doctoral awards from the Social Science and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). I provide evidence that evaluators give higher scores to candidates in their own discipline and then proceed to distinguish between two types of discrimination: taste-based and screening. This paper is the first to find support for screening discrimination: better candidates have higher scores when they are assessed by evaluators from their discipline, while there is no significant effect for weaker candidates. Moreover, the weakest candidates, those close to the funding threshold, actually have a lower probability of receiving a large award when there is an evaluator from their discipline in their evaluation committee. The second essay models the optimal distribution of government spending when the electoral benefit accrues to the district incumbent and not to the party in power. The model shows that, under certain parameters, more money is spent in core support districts. I test this prediction using the distribution of projects undertaken in the scope of the 2009-2010 Canada Economic Action Plan. The third essay assesses the deterrence of demerit points on the behavior of drivers. To address driver heterogeneity, I use the expiration of points as quasi-exogenous variation in the number of points. I can then compare the probability of a traffic violation for drivers who had the same number of points but now have a different number of demerit points. I find that a 3-point decrease in the number of demerit points through the expiration process increases the probability of a violation in the following two months by 40 to 50 percent, but only for drivers close to the threshold. The last essay studies the impact of a non-refundable tax credit for public transit introduced in July 2006 in Canada. I find no evidence that this tax credit increased the number of trips done using public transit. There is, however, some suggestive evidence that it did induce commuters to purchase monthly passes. / Thesis (Ph.D, Economics) -- Queen's University, 2014-05-29 11:18:01.817

Rti characteristics commonly implemented in high performing middle schools

Fitch, Mark Joseph 22 March 2014 (has links)
<p> The Individuals with Disabilities Act of 2004 allowed schools to use a Response to Intervention (RtI) model as opposed to the discrepancy model to qualify students as learning disabled. The incorporation of the RtI model provided earlier interventions for students and reduced avoidance of special services and false diagnosis. With the success of the RtI model at the elementary level, middle schools attempt to implement the program with varying success. In this study, middle school principals were surveyed to determine their respective building's current level of implementation in regard to RtI. The building's implementation scores were compared to academic achievement to determine if there was a relationship using a Pearson product moment correlation coefficient (PPMC). Academic achievement was determined by students' MAP index scores relating to the 8th grade Communication Arts test, as well as the percentage of students who scored below basic. The PPMC determined little to no relationship existed between implementation levels and MAP index scores, as well as the percentage of students scoring proficient. Quartile tables were developed to determine which surveyed buildings had the highest academic achievement. The survey responses were analyzed to determine what essential components of RtI they were implementing. The essential components being implemented were determined to be universal screening, professional development, establishing clear goals and expectations, and administrator participation.</p>

Evaluation of the Canadian Forces Injury Surveillance Pilot Project in Valcartier, Québec

Sarbu, Claudia L. 31 March 2014 (has links)
Introduction: An injury surveillance system was piloted in 2011 to monitor injuries in Canadian Forces. This evaluation of the key system attributes examined system performance. Methods: A retrospective chart review, a coding reliability study, a completeness of forms study and a key informant interview. Results: Sensitivity was 0.36 (95% CI: 0.28, 0.46). The system was missing patients over age 35. Kappa coefficients over 0.80 demonstrated good agreement. Completeness of forms study demonstrated high percentages of response for most questions and lower rates for questions related to using protective equipment, and consent for information sharing. Interviews proved acceptability to stakeholders, usefulness for identifying clusters and trends, simple and complete data collection, and flexibility. Conclusion: The injury surveillance system had good potential for several reasons: data collection did not require additional work in clinics; the system was well accepted and partially proved usefulness and timeliness in identifying unusual injury events.

Ozosunon neighbourhood care program: a program evaluation

Gagnon, Jackie 12 April 2011 (has links)
The following research thesis examined services offered by the Ozosunon program which is an Aboriginal Foster Care program. Its focus is to have Aboriginal families care for Aboriginal children within the community. The Ozosunon Neighbourhood Care Program Evaluation examined two primary questions: 1. Does the Ozosunon program provide services that are culturally appropriate? If the services are determined to be culturally appropriate, a second question was posed in an attempt to address the benefits of the services: 2. Does the Ozosunon program provide culturally appropriate services that support the child’s needs? The research was a mixed qualitative and quantitative study. The methods used were semi-structured interviews and questionnaires aimed at collecting relevant information regarding the program and the services offered. The results of the research showed that there are many shared positive views from participants regarding the program and its services. The responses showed that the program is offering cultural services but that perspectives regarding what that means were varied. After having completed the research it appears there is a need for further study on the services offered by the program, particularly how they are understood by staff, foster parents and families.
