A new model of mission is emerging among participants in the urban ministry of the Eden Network which reimagines evangelical identity and missiology. The Eden Network is a charismatic evangelical organisation which has engaged in incarnational urban ministry for the last nineteen years. In the course of my roles as a staff member and as a local participant observer, I identified tensions arising for Eden team members between their inherited evangelical theology and their experiences of mission in urban communities. This research aims to explore this dissonance, identifying the subcultural narratives of evangelicalism and the ways in which these narratives are complicated by lived experience.

This study analyzes the use of audiovisual media in the Evangelical practices of liturgy, teaching, and community engagement. In order to gain a more holistic perspective on the role media plays in these practices, the study focuses on media examples taken from prominent religious institutions. By analyzing these examples through the lens of critical theory, the study reveals aspects where the spectacle trends of our culture has permeated the media produced to help audiences engage in religious practices. Because religion helps people cultivate meaning in their lives, the influence of the spectacle trends on religious practices is important to examine as it has the potential to control that meaning. As a result, the contributions of religious media can become indistinguishable from those of mainstream media. Therefore, critical theory can be a powerful tool to help religious institutions discern where media amplifies meaning in practices and where it becomes a distraction. As the study examines existing content already utilized in Evangelical practices, the impact is compared across the three practices, which better illuminates the overall influence. / Media Studies & Production

Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University / The purpose of the investigation was to determine how communicants of the religious body, Plymouth Brethren II, the Open Brethren, have perceived the meaning of membership. An assembly in Massachusetts and three assemblies in Missouri were chosen as examples. From these assemblies fifty-one individuals were chosen for personal interviews. They were selected in such a manner that the numbers of people in the cross-section reflected the observed proportion of age and sex differences in the assemblies studied. The Brethren are a religious body who originated in Dublin about 1827. They are called Plymouth Brethren by those outside the fellowship. Assemblies of the body were gathered in England at an early date, and the movement can be found in most of the English-speaking countries of the world. The assemblies are characterized by a dispensationalist theology, a strict social code of conduct, and an organization, or lack of it, patterned on their interpretation of the New Testament church. There are no clergy, no boards. Each missionary goes out on his own by faith. The movement has been riven by schism over the years. The Open Brethren is the largest of the Brethren groups [TRUNCATED]
