"Faith without works is dead" : a critical analysis of the Lausanne Covenant in the light of theological insights from Protestant Methodist theologian José Míguez Bonino.Kanyense, Victor. January 2011 (has links)
This study sets out to suggest a theological and methodological framework that assists the
evangelical movement in Africa, and in Zambia in particular, to engage its missionary task
with greater effectiveness. The study is located within the radical evangelical theological
tradition. In this regard, firstly, the study posits that the evangelical movement has a heritage
of sociopolitical engagement that can be traced back to its origins in the great evangelical
awakening of the eighteenth century. Secondly, the study posits that the evangelical
movement abandoned its heritage of socio-political engagement during the first thirty years
of the twentieth century due to a number of seemingly unrelated factors that, nevertheless,
worked in concert. Thirdly, the study posits that during the third quarter of the twentieth
century, evangelicalism engaged in a process through which it inadvertently began to recover
its heritage of socio-political engagement. This process began with the International
Congress on World Evangelisation in Lausanne, Switzerland in July 1974 (Lausanne 1974).
It was an inadvertent recovery in that Lausanne 1974 did not set out to recover the lost
heritage of evangelical socio-political engagement, but to plan strategically and to encourage
evangelicals in the task of worldwide evangelism. However, during the proceedings of
Lausanne 1974, a group of radical evangelicals became dissatisfied with the Lausanne
Covenant’s proviso on the question of socio-political engagement, in its ‘two-mandate’
approach to the missionary task of the church.
This study however, argues that though the Lausanne movement has become a rallying point
and the Lausanne Covenant its expression of evangelical unity and purpose, it falls short of
providing an adequate theological and methodological framework for evangelical
sociopolitical engagement in Africa. The study posits that with key insights from José
Míguez Bonino’s theological and methodological works: socio-analytic mediation,
hermeneutic mediation and practical mediation, evangelicals in Africa, and in Zambia in
particular, will be enabled to engage in its missionary task with greater effectiveness. When
these missional tools from Míguez Bonino are engaged, evangelicals in Africa will be
equipped to engage a process of missional reflection on the contextual reality and thus
engage effectively in missional activities.
Employing these key insights from Míguez Bonino, the study argues for a process that will
free evangelicalism in Africa from the Northern American and European ‘theological
imperialism’ that prevented the development of its own theology and missiology. The study
further argues that such a process, as will assist evangelicalism in Africa to free itself from
such influence, will invariably lead evangelicalism in Africa to develop a theology and
missiology that will be more responsive to the African context. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2011.

Evangelism by fire : eine kritische Untersuchung der Evangelisationsarbeit von Reinhard Bonnke in Afrika / Evangelism by fire : a critical examination of the evangelism of Reinhard Bonnke in AfricaSchott, Daniel 28 February 2007 (has links)
This dissertation analyses Reinhard Bonnke's evangelistic ministry in Africa, and examines to
what extent his propagated "Evangelism by Fire" conforms with the New Testament ministry
of evangelism.
The results of an analysis of the New Testament ministry of evangelism, especially of
the evangelistic ministry of Philip, provide the basis for a comparison with Bonnke's
understanding and practice of the evangelistic ministry. A thorough analysis of Bonnke's
publications, especially those referring to the theme of evangelism, allows a systematic
insight into his understanding of the evangelistic ministry. In order to examine the conformity
between Reinhard Bonnke's understanding and his practice of evangelism, expert interviews
referring to his gospel crusade in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, in 2002 are analysed, and compared to his
understanding of evangelism. Finally, the findings about Bonnke's understanding and practice
of evangelism are related to the New Testament evangelistic ministry, and analysed
synoptically.
The research results of this study show that Bonnke's understanding of evangelism
and his practice of evangelism, during the gospel crusade in Ile-Ife, Nigeria, conform with
each other. Bonnke's propagated and applied "Evangelism by Fire" shows him to be an
evangelist orientated to the New Testament.
evangelistischen Dienstes.
neutestamentlicher Grundausrichtung. / Christian Spirituality, Church History & Missiology / (D.Th.(Missiology))

How does Evangelism relate to social action in the theologies of Michael Cassidy and Albert Nolan?Levine, Lou Gordon. January 1996 (has links)
Michael Cassidy and Albert Nolan both develop their understanding of evangelism and social
action within the context of the struggle for a democratic South Africa. This understanding is
determined by their own personal contexts and their social analysis of the South African
situation. Within these contexts they develop their views of sin and salvation. These underlying
issues, contexts and analyses are crucial to and part of their understanding of the relationship
between evangelism and social action.
This thesis sets out to consider the relationship between evangelism and social action in their
theologies by considering the underlying issues that determine this relationship, before finally
defining the exact nature ofthis relationship. It considers each theology individually first as each
has developed over time in context and needs to be seen as a unified whole as it relates to the .
issue of the relationship between evangelism and social action. It then compares their views with
each other with insights from other views.
Michael Cassidy and Albert Nolan both see sin and hence salvation as personal and social, but
Nolan understands these concepts as primarily social. Hence his understanding ofevangelism and
social action expressed in evangelization is primarily social. It sees them relating in
evangelization in an integrated, holistic way. However, in practice his emphasis on the need to
take sides in the struggle and on salvation as primarily in and through the struggle leads to
salvation becoming sometimes indistinguishable from human liberation. Thus evangelization also
sometimes becomes indistinguishable from the struggle. Cassidy sees these concepts as firstly
spiritual and then social and this determines his understanding of the relationship between
evangelism and social action. He emphasises these as transforming every level of human
relationships, but starting with a right relationship with God.
Cassidy achieves a more balanced Evangelical view of partnership in mission but with an
emphasis on evangelism and Nolan a somewhat more holistic liberationist theological view of
an integrated relationship between evangelism and social action in evangelization but with an
emphasis on social action. / Thesis (M.Th.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 1996.
