Selected Vocal Exercises and Their Relationship to Specific Laryngeal Conditions: a Description of Seven Case Studies

Mathis, Barbara 05 1900 (has links)
Good vocal health is a vital concern for those people who use the voice in a professional capacity, such as teachers, singers, actors, clergymen, and lawyers. Research in the area of vocal health reveals the need to determine if specific exercises are beneficial to the voice and if exercises used to train the singing voice might be beneficial to alleviate pathological and/or dysfunctional voice disorders. The purpose of this study was to describe the response of a variety of pathological voices to a selected set of singing exercises. Subjects were selected from the private practice of cooperating physicians who felt that the vocal instruction and exercise program might be helpful to the teachers, students, professional "pop" singers, and housewife-singers who were diagnosed to have muscle tension dysphonia, nodules, recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis, or iatrogenic dysphonia. Instrumentation for assessing conditions before, during, and after exercise included a brief case history, subject interviews, attending physicians' medical charts, flexible fiberoptic video nasolaryngoscopy, video cassette recorder and video tape segments, three physician/observers, and a specific diagnostic procedure which provided a method of assessing organic, functional, and perceptual variables. For the exercise program the researcher chose seven vocalises from the routine designed by Allan R. Lindquest, whose techniques combined those of the Italian school with those of Swedish studios which produced such singers as Flagstad and Bjoerling. The seven vocalises included a warm up "massage" and exercises for separation and blending of the registers, vowel clarity and modification, tone focus, vocal attack, and flexibility. Since all the subjects showed improvement after exercise in the vocal conditions observed in this study, these vocalises and technique may be helpful to alleviate pathological conditions and/or dysfunctional behavior in other subjects. The researcher further suggests that the voice profession investigate the efficiency of other techniques, exercises, and musical vocalises which might bring about positive changes in vocal conditions and behavior.

Zjištění nejčastějších funkčních poruch pohybového systému dětí mladšího školního věku, konkrétně v 3. a 4. třídě na základních školách ve Strakonicích / Determining the most common functional disorders of the musculoskeletal system of primary school children, particularly in 3th 1st and 4th grade at elementary schools in Strakonice

KŘÍŽOVÁ, Lenka January 2017 (has links)
This thesis addresses problems of occurance of most frequent function disorders in children of younger school age. The research was carried out in total of twenty four classrooms at elementary schools in Strakonice, and total of 402 children took part in it.The goal was to conduct quality literature search based on the study of expert Czech as well as foreign literature. It was followed by getting a consent of school principals, class teachers and parents to carry out research which would use standardized tests for examintaion of posture. A part of parents' consent was also a questionnare in which the parents provided height, weight and sport activity of their children. Collected data were entered into tables and evaluated in charts. Overall results showed different values of posture classification. According to Jaroš and Lomíček's method 20% of children had perfect posture, 73% good posture and 7% poor posture. Matthias' test showed 63% good posture and 37% poor posture. Evaluation of lower limbs came up with surprising discovery. Flat feet, varus or valgus were detected in 50 % of the research group. The research has confirmed importance of everyday physical activity and therapeutic exercise in fight against function disorders.

Vliv držení těla na pěvecký projev / Impact of a Posture on the Vocal Performance

Koverdynský, Luděk January 2012 (has links)
The aim of the dissertation thesis is to clarify the impact of a posture on the quality of voice performance. Through the method of a natural experiment, the authors carries out a research about the importance of a postural function in connection to building up basic voice skills. We will observe, both from theoretical and practical point of view if and through which means can we influence the incorrect postural habits and how these changes affect voice performance. The methodological handbook is a natural output which takes into account the relation of the postural function, breath and its development with assistance of vocal hearing as a corrector of the quality of voice performance. The outcomes of the research that helped to verify the new methodological approach approved correctness of suggested methods and their general validity. As a result, a knowledgeable teacher can use the new teaching method at all levels of students'musical development. KEY WORDS: Voice performance, postural function, diaphragm, vocal hearing, breath excercises with fonation.

Assessment centres : a comparison of trait ratings and task ratings for predicting managerial performance / Taksentrums : 'n vergelyking van trekstellings en taakstellings in die voorspelling van bestuursprestasie

This may be an indication of the relatively low construct validity of assessment centres. Researchers concluded that research results did not support the assumption that assessment centres generate dimensional ratings that represent traits and speculated whether tasks (i.e. exercises) should be used as a basis for making assessment centre ratings, rather than traits (i.e. dimensions). The aim of the study was to determine whether assessment centre task ratings are better predictors of managerial job performance than trait ratings. The study included 97 white middle-level managers of a South African service organisation. No difference was obtained between the predictive validities of traits ratings and task ratings (r = 0,087 for both ratings). Causes for the lack of differences between the predictive validities were discussed. / M. A. (Industrial Psychology)
