Discutimos a tradicional (dificuldade de) distin??o entre causa e explica??o, propondo haver um continuum entre essas duas rela??es. Objetivamos examin?-la com vistas a identificar propriedades formais e funcionais, considerando suas inst?ncias de uso em situa??es reais de comunica??o, al?m de propor um cont?nuo de sentidos a ela relacionados. Assumindo uma perspectiva funcional, a pesquisa fundamenta-se te?rico-metodologicamente na Lingu?stica (Funcional) Centrada no Uso (LFCU), nos termos de Martelotta (2011) e Furtado da Cunha, Bispo e Silva (2013). Essa abordagem re?ne pressupostos da Lingu?stica Funcional norte-americana, tal como definida por Giv?n (1979, 1995, 2011), Hopper (1991), Bybee (2010, 2011) e Traugott (2011), e da Lingu?stica Cognitiva, representada por Lakoff (1987), Langacker (1987), Lakoff e Johnson (1999). Ademais, agregamos contribui??es da Gram?tica de Constru??es, representada por Goldberg (1995), Croft (2001) e Traugott e Trousdale (2013). Os dados utilizados para a an?lise foram retirados do Corpus Discurso & Gram?tica, se??es Natal (FURTADO DA CUNHA, 1998) e Rio de Janeiro, (VOTRE; OLIVEIRA, 1995), composto de textos orais e escritos, e de textos de diversos g?neros extra?dos do jornal Tribuna do Norte, produzido no Rio Grande do Norte. A pesquisa apresenta uma abordagem de vi?s quali-quantitativo, com predomin?ncia do primeiro. Possui tamb?m car?ter descritivo e explicativo. Com base nos resultados, identificamos que a constru??o em estudo representa um esquema abstrato que licencia diferentes microestruturas com base no preenchimento do slot SN, as quais apresentam especificidades sem?ntico-cognitivas e discursivo-pragm?ticas. Al?m disso, constatamos que o n?cleo do slot X pode apresentar-se preenchido por um SN (lexical ou pronominal) ou por uma ora??o. Tamb?m verificamos que, al?m de causa e explica??o, esse padr?o construcional est? relacionado a um cont?nuo de outros sentidos, que envolve as ideias de motivo, raz?o e justificativa. / We investigate, in this work the causal-explanatory construction [POR + SN + DE + X] in functional perspective. We discuss the traditional (difficulty of) distinction between cause and explanation, proposing to have a continuum between these two relations. Our aim was to examine it in order to identify formal and functional properties, considering its instances of use in real communication situations, and propose a continuum of related meanings. Approaching a functional perspective, the research is based on theoretically-methodologically in the Use- oriented linguist (Functional) LFCU, according to Martelotta (2011) and Furtado da Cunha, Bispo and Silva (2013). This approach assumes the assumptions of North American Functional Linguistics, as defined by Giv?n (1979, 1995, 2011), Hopper (1991), Bybee (2010, 2011) and Traugott (2011), and Cognitive Linguistics, represented by Lakoff 1987), Langacker (1987), Lakoff and Johnson (1999). In addition, some contributions from the Grammar of Constructions, represented by Goldberg (1995), Croft (2001) and Traugott and Trousdale (2013). The data used for the analysis were taken from the Corpus Discurso & Gram?tica, sections Natal (FURTADO DA CUNHA, 1998) and Rio de Janeiro, (VOTRE; OLIVEIRA, 1995), composed of oral and written texts, and texts of several genres extracted from newspaper Tribuna do Norte, produced in Rio Grande do Norte. The research presents a qualitative-quantitative approach, with a predominance of the first one. It also has a descriptive and explanatory feature. Based on the results, it was identified that the framing under study represents an abstract scheme that licenses different microstructures based on the filling of the SN slot, which present semantic-cognitive and discursive-pragmatic specificities. In addition, it was found that the core of slot X can be filled by a SN (lexical or pronominal) or by a sentence. Besisdes that it was verified that, beyond to cause and explanation, this constructional pattern is related to a continuum of other senses, which involves the ideas of motive, reason, and justification.
