Niller, Joanna January 2023 (has links)
Previous studies have found correlations between expressive vocabulary and both the receptive and the expressive language ability in preschool children, but there is a lack of knowledge about possible correlations in school-age children. Furthermore, research has found gender differences in these language abilities in preschool children, meaning that girls develop earlier than boys. Thus, the purpose of this study was to answer whether there is an association between expressive vocabulary and both the receptive and the expressive language ability of pupils in year 2, and whether gender differences occur. A Swedish translation and standardisation of the test Intelligence and Development Scales for Children and Adolescents – 2nd Edition (IDS-2) is currently underway. The test battery together with the support of the newly constructed naming test, Nomine was used to answer the specific research questions. A total of 50 pupils from schools in Stockholm County were included in this study. During the data collection, the participants had to complete subtest 26 from IDS-2 and all tasks from Nomine. The study found statistically significant positive correlations between expressive vocabulary and both the receptive and expressive language ability. However, gender differences did not occur in these language abilities.
