The effects of R&D cooperation and labour mobility on innovationSimonen, J. (Jaakko) 20 March 2007 (has links)
Abstract
The purpose of this dissertation is to contribute both theoretically and empirically to the literature of regional economics. We aim to provide theoretical insights and explanations as well as interesting empirical findings which are relevant for the analyses of the regional development.
Chapter two reviews the literature on new growth theory, economic geography, geography of innovation and innovation process. We illustrate connections between these strands of literature from the perspective of technological development and its diffusion. We discuss the role of innovation activity, technological development, and especially knowledge spillovers in economic growth, and clarify their microeconomic linkages to endogenous macroeconomic growth.
In chapter three we shed additional light on the role of intra-regional economies of scale and inter-regional externalities in regional economic growth. Chapter provides interesting theoretical insights and explanations for the analysis of regional development.
In chapters four to seven we analyse how the establishments' individual characteristics and their R&D cooperation with other firms and organizations as well as sectoral and geographical origins of their labour acquisitions affects the innovation performance of the establishments. We try to isolate the independent role on innovation performance played by knowledge transfers associated with localised human-capital mobility from those associated with inter-firm and inter-organisational tacit knowledge spillovers. No previous studies, as far as we are aware, have been able to empirically identify and distinguish in such a detailed and comprehensive manner as in this dissertation the effects of these two, qualitatively quite different types of knowledge transfer mechanisms on innovation.

Consumption and Leisure ExternalitiesChueh, Chao-yu 08 August 2011 (has links)
Assume the model is a closed economy, and the shock is from technology progress. This research, based on a real business cycle model, explores the government¡¦s optimal taxation on consumption and labor income under the condition that representative agent¡¦s utility function has consumption externalities as well as leisure externalities. In the following, by changing the value (namely, by setting the consumption and leisure externalities parameter as either positive or negative), this research examines cyclical property of optimal taxation in terms of four situations occurred. The results indicate that, when labor income taxation in the economy is a constant, consumption externalities parameter is negative, leisure externalities parameter is positive, then the consumption taxation is countercyclical at this time; at other times the consumption taxation is procyclical. On the other hand, suppose consumption taxation is a constant, consumption externalities parameter is negative, leisure externalities parameter is positive, or both consumption and leisure externalities parameter are negative, then labor income taxation is countercyclical at this time; at other times the labor income taxation is procyclical.

Infrastruktura obcí a s ní spojené externality (se zaměřením na vybrané obce) / Municipal infrastructure and its connected externalities (with a focus on selected municipalities)MALÍKOVÁ, Hana January 2012 (has links)
This thesis deals with the municipal infrastructure and its connected externalities in municipalities Lásenice, Lodhéřov and Stráž nad Nežárkou. Infrastructure in municipalities is a factor of their development. Municipalities are therefore generally trying to improve infrastructure and to internalize the externalities, which are connected with the infrastructure. It is because it leads to the development of municipality.

Spatial Externalities and Growth in a Mankiw-Romer-Weil World: Theory and EvidenceFischer, Manfred M. January 2018 (has links) (PDF)
This paper presents a theoretical growth model that accounts for technological
interdependence among regions in a Mankiw-Romer-Weil world. The reasoning behind the
theoretical work is that technological ideas cannot be fully appropriated by investors and
these ideas may diffuse and increase the productivity of other firms. We link the diffusion of
ideas to spatial proximity and allow for ideas to flow to nearby regional economies. Through
the magic of solving for the reduced form of the theoretical model and the magic of spatial
autoregressive processes, the simple dependence on a small number of neighbouring
regions leads to a reduced form theoretical model and an associated empirical model where
changes in a single region can potentially impact all other regions. This implies that
conventional regression interpretations of the parameter estimates would be wrong. The
proper way to interpret the model has to rely on matrices of partial derivatives of the
dependent variable with respect to changes in the Mankiw-Romer-Weil variables, using
scalar summary measures for reporting the estimates of the marginal impacts from the
model. The summary impact measure estimates indicate that technological interdependence
among European regions works through physical rather than human capital externalities.
