Flotation Characteristics Of Minerals In Feldspar Ores

Ozun, Savas 01 March 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Albite (Na-feldspar) and orthoclase (K-feldspar) are the major feldspar minerals used in the production of glass and ceramics. They are found together with impurities like biotite, muscovite, quartz and rutile which are not desired for ceramics and glass industries. Therefore, these have to be removed to make the ore available for industrial use. In order to shed light on the actual feldspar ores, in this study / the flotation characteristics of albite, biotite, muscovite, orthoclase, quartz and rutile were investigated separately in their pure forms. In the investigation, the electrokinetic potential measurements and micro-flotation studies have been carried out to get information about their flotation characteristics under the effect of three different collectors, Aero 704, Aero 3000C and Aero 825, and the pH of the medium. The flotation recoveries were found to be pH dependent and the effective between the pH range of 7.0 and 11.5 in the presence of Aero 704. In the case of flotation with Aero 3000C, the recoveries reached up to 95.0% at certain concentrations and pH values and decreased sharply below pH 3.0 and above pH 9.5 for all the minerals tested. In the presence of Aero 825, the flotation recoveries of the minerals except for rutile, were found to be insufficient even with its highest concentration. In order to evaluate the adsorption mechanism of the collectors, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses were carried out. From the AFM results it might be deduced that the behavior of Aero 3000C and Aero 825 was found to be almost similar for biotite and muscovite as monolayer adsorption and for the remaining minerals, albite, orthoclase, quartz and rutile, as monolayer and bilayer adsorption together. In the case of Aero 704, for albite and orthoclase, the adsorption of the collector might be the reason for monolayer and bilayer formation on their surfaces. The strength of the interaction of the collectors on the mineral surfaces was followed by FTIR analyses before and after acetone washing. The interaction of all the collectors was found to be weak in the case of albite, orthoclase, quartz and rutile whereas the interaction of Aero 704 and Aero 3000C was found to be strong in the case of biotite and muscovite.

The Crystallographic Investigation of a Strontium Labradorite

Cordahi, George 15 June 2015 (has links)
Precession photography was used to determine the lattice parameters, the crystal system, the space group and the structure of an artificial Sr-labradorite of composition: Ab27, SrAn73. C= 7.107Å, Ɣ= 90 degrees, β= 115.834 degrees. The crystal system is monoclinic, space group= C2/ m and structure is albite type, reflections being restricted to the 'a' type. The abundance, lithophile characteristics and appropriate ionic radii of elements in Groups IA and IIA are the factors governing their presence as cations of feldspars in nature. The structures of feldspars are discussed as a function of the relative proportion of cations of a charge of +1 and +2. The crystal symmetry (i.e. monoclinicity or triclinicity) is discussed as a function of the ionic radius of the cation. / Thesis / Bachelor of Science (BSc)

Exploration and application of post-infrared high-temperature infrared stimulated luminescence dating techniques: investigation of marine terrace deposits along the northern San Andreas Fault

Roozeboom, Jennifer Elizabeth January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Geology / Joel Q. Spencer / Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating is a relatively new dating method, tangibly introduced in 1985 when Huntley et al. demonstrated the ability to use light-sensitive traps to measure radiation exposure and determine the age of sediment. Quartz and feldspar grains are commonly used for the method, with quartz receiving significantly more attention than feldspars until the past decade. Recent research has improved the practicality of using feldspars as a reliable dosimeter –an appealing notion as the intrinsic properties of feldspars allow them to date older sediment that may lie beyond the reliable range of quartz dosimetry. This work explores and utilizes the contemporary feldspar technique termed post-infrared, high-temperature infrared stimulated luminescence (pIRIR) dating to add to the existing knowledge base of this method, particularly by testing different preheat and measurement temperature combinations. Analysis of the each pIRIR method indicates that the pIRIR signal stimulated at 225°C is more appropriate for dating than the pIRIR signal stimulated at 290°C. Techniques and protocols developed in this work are done so via their application to a marine terrace that is displaced by the San Andreas Fault. Corals from the terrace along the Pacific plate, dated with U-series by Muhs et al. (2002), offer an age estimate. Comparison of the pIRIR ages to the U-series ages yield an underestimation, suggesting the pIRIR method may be more useful as a means of correlating terraces across the fault, than for providing ages of terrace formation.

Les feldspaths comme support pour la datation par luminescence de gisements archéologiques et de séquences quaternaires d'Aquitaine / Feldspars as support for the luminescence dating of archaeological deposits and quaternary sequences of Aquitaine

Frouin, Marine 12 December 2014 (has links)
Currently available chronological information for Middle Palaeolithic sites in southwestern France precludes the establishment of a robust chronological framework. For these early periods, developing such a framework relies upon important methodological advancements in numerical dating techniques. The results of this study are essentially based on the optical luminescence dating of sedimentary feldspars and quartz. Focusing on the most commonly employed luminescence signals (IRSL, pIR-IRSL), it was possible to more clearly evaluate the reliability of dates obtained on K-feldspars. A dating protocol for these materials based on their radioluminescence signal (IR-RF) was also developed. Optical luminescence dates were produced for six major archaeological sites: (Marillac, Charente), Combe Brune 2 (Creysse, Dordogne), Roc de Marsal (Campagne, Dordogne), Artenac (Saint-Mary, Charente), La Quina (Gardes-le-Pontaroux, Charente) et La Ferrassie (Savignac-de-Miremont, Dordogne). Collating the results for each archaeological level allowed the coherence of the dates to be tested and a reliable chronological sequence to be proposed for each site. The different human occupations, characterised by their industrial attribution, could be placed within a chronological framework that incorporates regional palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic variations. Finally, several observations provide new insights for our understanding of Neandertal cultures.
