The Economics of management effort in planted forests: an empirical analysis of fertilization and thinning prescriptions of Pinus taeda in the US SouthSartori, Pedro J. 06 January 2021 (has links)
If a landowner‘s main objective is to maximize his/her profits from planted forest investments, questions such as when and where exactly they should fertilize, thin and clearcut must be answered. We take advantage of an experiment established in 5 different states in the US South. Forest inventory data was collected for different combinations of thinning densities where some of them received fertilization. We use the Land Expectation Value methodology where our assumptions are the infinite amount of Pine rotations while costs and stumpage prices are known and constant, and markets are perfect. One of the main results we found is that fertilization has a decreasing marginal benefit on site index quality. / M.S. / If the landowner‘s main objective is to maximize profit from forest investments, questions such as when and where they should fertilize, thin and clearcut must be answered. Fertilization‘s main objective is to provide essential nutrients for tree growth. Thinnings have two main objectives: a source of revenue in the middle of the forest rotation by selling the thinned trees and secondly to open space to the residual trees so they grown in diameter and gain value. We analyze how thinning and fertilization impact forest management from an economic perspective by checking their benefits and costs to landowners. We found that for low site index, fertilization has a positive impact in the sense its benefit is greater than the fertilization application cost. For better site indices, the opposite is true. For those who want to maximize economic benefits from planted forests. we end up with recommendations of which type of thinning and fertilization should be done according to the landowner site quality.

In this chapter the aim is to outline the different chapters under section A.
Against this background, we will conduct a literature review of relevant studies performed, and evaluate their comments regarding identifying embryo markers which can be utilized to improve overall ART outcome. We will evaluate the embryo marker sHLA-G in detail, using a prospective randomized study as well as a retrospective multi-centre study. The role of the morphology and genetic profile of an oocyte, zygote and embryo and subsequent blastocyst formation will be evaluated with the help of WGA/CGH. The work will then be summarized and conclusions will be made as well as possible suggestions for future directions will be indicated. In section B the methodology of the studies explaining the role of the candidate is illustrated.
CHAPTER 2
In this chapter the impact of the oocyte/zygote and the embryo on implantation/pregnancy rate was discussed. The morphologic characteristics of the oocyte, the cumulus–oocyte-complex (COC), the zona pellucida, the perivitelline space, cytoplasm and meiotic spindle and the polar body and its appearance were discussed in detail. The morphologic characteristics of embryo fragmentation and its effect on embryo development, ploidy and blastocyst formation were also studied. Embryo markers to predict pregnancy outcome were researched based on the international literature. The pronuclear morphology and early cleavage were highlighted as non-invasive embryo markers to predict outcome.
A non-invasive biochemical marker, soluble Human Leucocyte-Antigen-G (sHLA-G), that is expressed by developing embryos was researched. The value of blastocyst transfer and the improved ongoing pregnancy rate compared to cleavage stage embryos were highlighted based on a recent meta-analysis. A detailed discussion on sHLA-G as well as Array-CGH and the future of these tests followed.
CHAPTER 3
In this chapter the aim was to compare pregnancy and implantation rates when embryos are selected based on a single Day 3 (D 3) morphology score vs. a GES score plus sHLA-G expression. This was a prospective randomized study (n=214) undergoing fresh ICSI cycles. Embryos were selected for transfer based on either Day 3 morphology score (Group A) or GES-scoring plus sHLA-G expression (Group B). The following results were reported: Clinical [35/107 (33%) vs. 52/107 (49%)] and ongoing pregnancy [20/107 (19%) vs. 52/107 (49%)] rates were significantly different between Group A and Group B (p<0.05). Implantation rates were not significantly different between Group A [52/353 (15%)] and Group B [73/417 (18%)] (p<0.05). The number of pregnancies lost during the first trimester was nearly 12 times higher in Group A [25/52 (48%)]. It was concluded that the miscarriage rate was significantly lower in Group B than Group A and the pregnancy results were superior when embryos were selected based on GES plus sHLA-G expression.
CHAPTER 4
Several studies have reported an association between the presence of soluble human leukocyte antigen-G (sHLA-G) in human embryo culture supernatants (ES) with implantation and pregnancy outcome in vitro. However, the actual presence role during implantation and effect on implantation and pregnancy outcome are still controversial. A retrospective multi-centre study was performed on 2040 ICSI patients in six different centers. All embryos were individually cultured and a chemiluminescence enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect the presence of sHLA-G in culture medium surrounding embryos. In all centers, a positive sHLA-G result was associated with an increase in odds of multiple clinical implantations (OR: 1.48, 95% CI: 1.07 to 2.05, p-value: 0.0170), and an increased odds of multiple on-going pregnancies (OR: 1.66, 95% CI: 1.10, 2.51, p-value: 0.0170). Data from this multi-centre study emphasize that sHLA-G expression is a valuable non-invasive embryo marker to assist in improving pregnancy outcome with the theoretical potential to reduce multiple pregnancies. A combination of sHLA-G expression and extended embryo culture to the blastocyst stage might provide future tools by which to select single embryos for transfer and reduce the risk of multiple gestational, without compromising their pregnancy rates.
CHAPTER 5
In this chapter the ploidy status of first and second polar bodies and Day 3 blastomere, embryo morphology and biochemical (sHLA-G) characteristics were correlated with blastocyst development and subsequent pregnancy outcome. All oocytes/zygotes and embryos were individually cultured to the blastocyst stage. PB-I, PB-II and blastomeres underwent whole genome amplification (WGA) and comparative genome hybridization (CGH) and complete karyotyping. Each embryo‟s culture medium supernatant was collected and analyzed for sHLA-G expression on Day 2. The following results were reported: Fifty seven mature (MII) donor oocytes were obtained, 33/57 (57.9%) were aneuploid, 21/57 (36.8%) were euploid and 3/57 (5%) were “inconclusive”. No correlation was found between CGH status of PB-I, PB-II and the GES-score. Furthermore, no correlation was established between PB-I CGH results and blastocyst morphology grade. There was a significant correlation between PB-I CGH and blastomere CGH results. Euploid and aneuploid PB-I developed into 58% and 67% blastocysts, respectively. Kappa statistics (>0.7) revealed a positive correlation between the ploidy of PB-I, PB-II and the blastomeres. It was concluded that following ICSI and sequential genetic karyotyping of the oocyte/zygote and subsequent blastomeres, the majority of oocytes fertilized and subsequent zygotes developed into blastocysts, despite their ploidy status. We therefore conclude that blastocyst development is not associated with ploidy. CHAPTER 6
Identifying a developmentally competent embryo to transfer that has the highest probability to develop into a live baby has been an issue of debate and continues research. The aim of this chapter is to discuss the morphological, biochemical and genetic features of an embryo that has been shown to be predictive of implantation and pregnancy outcome in ART using most current evidence.
A literature search was performed looking at the correlation between pronuclear morphology, early cleavage, cleavage stage embryos, blastocyst development, the presence of sHLA-G, CGH, embryo development and implantation/pregnancy rates in ART. Based on the available literature, a combination of observations could assist the scientist with embryo selection. The pronuclear stage morphology, the early embryo division, cleavage embryo stage and quality of the day 3 embryos provides limited guidance. However, choosing a blastocyst with a positive sHLA-G result on Day 5 is the optimal combination to make the final selection before embryo transfer or freezing. This non-invasive approach should improve pregnancy outcome and reduce multiple pregnancy rates. As far as the use of the more invasive technology such as aCGH is concerned, more research on pregnancy outcome is needed.
CHAPTER 7
A combination of observations for embryo selection, starting with oocyte grading, pronuclear stage morphology, early zygote cleaving and cleavage-stage embryo morphology/quality on Day-3, however, ultimately using extended embryo culture and choosing a blastocyst on Day 5 with positive sHLA-G values available, will assist the scientist in making the final decision before selecting an embryo for transfer or cryopreservation. The use of aCGH (for chromosomal analysis) is invasive and is still considered experimental.
Finally we conclude that despite all the above mentioned parameters to select an embryo for transfer that will develop into a live baby, more extensive research and international corroboration is needed in order to improve and standardize embryo selection criteria. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: HOOFSTUK 1
Die doel in hierdie hoofstuk is om die verskillende hoofstukke onder Afdeling A uiteen te sit. Daar word beplan om „n literatuur oorsig te doen van toepaslike studies rakend embriomerkers wat swangerskap-uitkoms in in vitro bevrugting kan verbeter. Verder sal die embriomerker sHLA-G deeglike bestudeer word met behulp van „n prospektiewe gerandomiseerde studie, asook „n retrospektiewe multisentrum studie. Die rol van embrio morfologie en die genetiese profiel van die ovum, sigoot asook die embrio en die daaropvolgende blastosist vorming sal geëvalueer word met behulp van WGA/CGH. Alle bevindings sal daarna opgesom word, gevolg deur „n sinvolle gevolgtrekking en laastens sal voorstelle gemaak word vir toekomstige navorsing op die gebied.

HOOFSTUK 2
In hierdie hoofstuk word die impak van die oösiet en die embrio op die inplanting/swangerskap-koers bespreek. Die morfologiese eienskappe van die oösiet, die kumulus-oösiet kompleks, die sona pellucida, die perivitelline spasie, sitoplasma en meiotiese spoel, die poolliggaam en die se voorkoms word breedvoerig bespreek.
Die morfologiese eienskappe van die embrio, fragmentasie en die invloed daarvan op die embrio, ploïdie, en blastosistvorming word bespreek. In alle sentra is „n positiewe sHLA-G uitslag met „n toename in die waarskynlikheid van veelvuldige inplantings geassosieer (OR: 1.48, 95% CI: 1.07 tot 2.05, p-waarde: 0.0170), asook „n toename in waarskynlikheid van meervoudige swangerskappe wat voortduur (OR: 1.66, 95% CI: 1.10, 2.51, p-waarde: 0.0170).
Data uit die multisentriese studie beklemtoon dat sHLA-G uitdrukking „n waardevolle nie-indringende embriomerker is om by te dra tot die verbetering van swangerskapsuitkoms, asook die teoretiese potensiaal om meervoudige swangerskappe te verminder.

In dié hoofstuk word die ploïdie status van die eerste en tweede poolliggaampies en Dag 3 blastomere, embrio morfologie en biochemiese (sHLA-G) eienskappe gekorrelleer met blastosist ontwikkelling en uiteindelike swangerskapsuitkoms. Alle oösiete/sigote en embrios is individueel tot die blastosist stadium gevolg.
PB-I, PB-II en blastomere het “volledige kariotipering ondergaan deur gebruik te maak van die toets “comparative genome hybridization (CGH)”. Elke embrio se kultuurmedium supernatant is versamel en ontleed vir sHLA-G uitdrukking op Dag 2. Die volgende uitslae is gerapporteer: Sewe-en-vyftig mature (MII) donor oösiete is verkry; 33/57 (57.9%) is aneuploïd, 21/57 (36.8%) is euploïd en 3/57 (5%) is onbeslis. Geen verwantskap is gevind tussen CGH status van PB-I, PB-II en die GES-telling. Geen verwantskap is gevind tussen CGH status van sHLA-G. Verder was daar geen verwantskap gevind tussen PB-I CGH uitslae en blastosist morfologie graad nie. Daar was „n beduidende korrelasie tussen PB-I CGH en blastomeer CGH uitslae.
Euploïde en aneuploïde PB-I het onderskeidelik in 58% en 67% blastosiste ontwikkel. Daar is „n positiewe verwantskap tussen die ploïdie van PB-I, PB-II en die blastomere aangetoon [Kappa (>0.7)]. Dit is afgelei dat na ICSI en sekwensiële genetiese kariotipering van die oösiet/sigoot en daaropvolgende blastomere, die meerderheid oösiete bevrug is en die daaropvolgende sigote ontwikkel het tot blastosiste, ongeag hul ploïdie status. Ons afleiding is dus dat blastosist ontwikkelling nie aan ploïdie verwant is nie.
HOOFSTUK 6
In hierdie hoofstuk bespreek ons waarnemings wat betref seleksie kriteria om die beste embrios te kies vir terugplasing wat uiteindelik tot „n suksesvolle swangeskap sal lei. Morfologiese, biochemiese en genetiese faktore is ondersoek. „n Onderskeiding is gemaak tussen nie-indringende (mikroskopiese en biochemiese) en indringende (embrio biopsie, aCGH) tegnieke.
'n Kombinasie van nie-indringende observasies, wat insluit pronukliere mofologie, vroee sigoot verdeling en vroeë embrio morfologie/kwalitieit op Dag-3 het beperkte inligting verskaf wat betref swangerskapkans. Verlengde embrio kweking tot die blastosist stadium (Dag-5) plus „n positiewe sHLA-G resultaat gee egter veel meer voordelige inligting aan die embrioloog met die embrio seleksie proses, voor embrio terugplasing of bevriesing. This study was initiated in 2003 in response to a push by one of the grain buying companies to produce more durum wheat for export from Arizona. The export market required a minimum of 13% protein and other quality constraints. A nitrogen timing regime was established by the University to provide the crop with this nutrient according to its physiological development. This study had four nitrogen application treatments addressing different ways to provide the crop with its nitrogen needs. This second year of the study showed statistically different yields from the treatments applied and different inferences from the first year of the study. An economic analysis is included to show the profitability of nitrogen applications for this year and an economic summary for the last four years of nitrogen studies on durum wheat.

Wheat and barley response to nitrogen fertilization at Safford Agricultural Center, 2001-02Clark, Lee J., Carpenter, E. W. 10 1900 (has links)
This study is a follow-up on a study initiated three years ago with an emphasis on the timing of application of nitrogen (N) fertilizer. The times targeted in this study were: at planting, at initiation of growth and at boot stage. A nitrogen starter fertilizer at planting increased yields over 100 pounds of grain per acre for both wheat and barley compared with plots which did not receive the added nitrogen at planting. No difference was seen between applying 46 or 92 pounds of N per acre as a starter fertilizer. Amount of N added at boot stage seemed to increase barley yields slightly but had no effect on wheat yield nor protein content. An economic analysis is included to show the profitability of nitrogen applications.

This two year study is a follow-up to a study started in 1999, looking at phosphorus applications at planting on wheat and barley. Treatments applied were 0, 100, 200 and 400 pounds of 16-20-0 planted through the grain drill with the seed. Phosphorus applied at planting improved yields in most replicates, but because of the cost of the fertilizer, the higher yields were not always the most economically profitable.

The 2003 study was a follow up of the 2001 and 2002 studies, but the major differences were the selection of a high quality durum wheat with values significantly higher that those seen in the previous two studies and the untreated check was eliminated and a higher level of phosphorous was applied. Treatments applied were 100, 200, 400 and 600 pounds of 16-20-0 planted with the seed through the grain drill. Phosphorus applied at planting improved yields with increasing application rates. In this study, the highest rate of application of phosphorus produced the highest profit.

Impact of self-fertilization on fecundity, the timing of first reproduction, and population genetic structure: Is a mate worth the wait?Caplins, Serena 12 June 2013 (has links)
Organisms capable of self-fertilization typically exhibit two evolutionary syndromes uniting high inbreeding depression with low levels of selfing, or low inbreeding depression and high levels of selfing. This study tests for inbreeding depression in an apparent self-compatible, hermaphroditic marine nemertean worm, Prosorhochmus americanus. Fecundity and timing to first reproduction were assessed in isolated and paired worms. Isolated worms produced significantly more offspring than paired worms and did not show inbreeding avoidance. The selfing rate of natural populations was evaluated using species-specific microsatellites and is consistent with preferential selfing (mean: 0.801), though some outcrossing appears to take place. Population genetic structure indicates populations are disjunct and characterized by low levels of gene flow. Our results reveal P. americanus exhibits an interesting suite of life-history traits, uniting high dispersal potential through self-fertilization and high fecundity, with the lack of a dispersive larval stage and low levels of gene flow.

Correction of potassium deficiency in soybean and corn production in southeast KansasMatz, Jason D. January 1900 (has links)

Mengel / Over the last decade low (< 130 mg kg -1) soil test potassium (K) levels and increased crop K deficiency have become a major concern in the clay-pan soils of southeast Kansas. The use of more intense crop rotations and the increased production of high K extracting crops (e.g.
soybeans (Glycine max L.)) has significantly increased K removal from these soils. In addition, the traditional use of the nutrient sufficiency-based fertilizer recommendations has resulted in K application rates being substantially lower than removal rates. Because of these practices, many soils that had naturally elevated K availability 25 years ago have declined in K content. More troubling is the extreme yearly variation of soil test exchangeable K levels reported in the region,
which has many producers and consultants concerned about proper K management.
This study was initiated to examine the extent of K soil test variation and to determine if
the variability is impacting plant K availability by analyzing soybean leaf K content and crop
yield. A major objective of our research is to identify the mechanism(s) driving these changes in soil test K levels and K availability to crops during the growing season. The long-term goal is to be able to design a soil sampling system and develop alternative K fertilizer recommendation
strategies that could alleviate K deficiency impacts on crop yield. Evaluation of different K
fertilizer application practices including rate of application and broadcast or surface band
methods of application were studied as tools to correct soybean K deficiency. The direct and
residual impacts of K fertilization and placement were also evaluated on corn (Zea mays L.)
grown in the rotation with the soybeans.
Results observed from this research showed that monthly soil samples taken during three
crop years at multiple locations have ammonium acetate exchangeable K levels that indeed
change dramatically. The data we collected together with data accumulated by farmers and crop consultants showed significant fluctuation in exchangeable K levels of up to 50% on a yearly and even on a monthly basis. Levels seem to demonstrate seasonal changes: higher in the spring months and then decline in the summer and fall. Potassium soil test levels also appear to follow a similar trend as monthly precipitation and soil moisture status. During wet months soil levels tend to increase and then decline during drier months, however, this is not a perfect relationship and other factors are likely to be involved in regulating soil test K levels. No clear effect of K fertilization or method of placement on soybean or corn yields was observed during the study. However, soybean leaf samples revealed that on very low (< 90 mg kg -1) soil test sites surface band applied fertilizer increased leaf K concentrations compared to broadcasted applications. Furthermore, the corn study revealed no distinct difference between using a split annual or biannual fertilizer application system.
Maintaining soil test K levels above 130 mg kg
-1 using a spring soil test appears to be a
successful strategy for avoiding K deficiency. Traditionally most soil sampling occurs in late
summer or fall when soil conditions are dry. Our data has demonstrated that during this period
one should expect to encounter low soil test results that may not be true indicators of soil K
levels during the spring planting months. With that said, spring soil sampling can be difficult to do in a timely fashion due to weather, as well as potential labor restrictions. Another critical point is to not switch back and forth between spring and fall sampling dates. Staying consistent with your sample timing will minimize the seasonal variability that is frequently experienced. Additionally, adopting a build and maintain fertilizer recommendation philosophy rather than a nutrient sufficiency-based recommendation approach is a better nutrient budgeting method to avoid having removal rates exceeding nutrient additions. The best K management proposal would be to consider using a build and maintain approach in combination with basing fertilizer rates on spring soil test K levels.

O presente trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar as respostas da Brachiaria decumbens Stapf, cultivada em solo proveniente de uma pastagem degradada. O experimento foi desenvolvido em casa-de-vegetação do Departamento de Ciências Biológicas da Escola Superior de Agricultura "Luiz de Queiroz"/USP. O solo utilizado foi classificado como Neossolo Quartzarênico e foi coletado numa profundidade de 0 a 20 cm. Após a coleta esse solo foi seco, homogeneizado, pesado e colocados em sacos plásticos, juntamente com as respectivas doses de calcário e depositados em vasos com capacidade de 10 kg, onde permaneceram por um período de 60 dias. Os tratamentos consistiram de quatro doses de nitrogênio (0, 180, 630 e 1080 mg kg -1 de solo), quatro doses de calcário (0, 1587,6, 3175,2 e 4762,8 mg kg -1 de solo) e três doses de enxofre (0, 108 e 216 mg kg -1 de solo). Empregou-se um esquema fatorial 4x4x3 perfazendo 48 combinações, as quais foram distribuídas segundo o delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, com três repetições. No momento do plantio efetuou-se uma adubação com fósforo e potássio, micronutrientes (cobre e zinco) e enxofre. Aos treze dias após o plantio realizou-se a adubação com o nitrogênio. Foram realizados dois cortes e um dia antes de cada corte efetuou-se avaliações do teor de clorofila. Após o corte o material coletado foi separado em folhas emergentes, lâminas de folhas recém-expandidas, lâminas de folhas maduras e colmos mais bainhas e foi realizada a leitura da área foliar dos três primeiros. Em seguida esse material foi colocado em estufa de circulação forçada de ar a 65 0 C por 72 horas para determinar a matéria seca de cada componente da parte aérea e, esse mesmo procedimento foi feito para as raízes após serem lavadas. O material depois de pesado foi moído em moinho tipo Wiley e levado ao laboratório para a determinação de macro e micronutrientes. Realizou-se também, a contagem de perfilhos. Os resultados evidenciaram efeito significativo (P<0,05) das doses de nitrogênio no primeiro corte, e significância para a interação entre enxofre e nitrogênio para a produção de matéria seca da parte aérea da planta, no primeiro e segundo crescimentos. Quanto à produção de matéria seca das raízes, verificou-se efeito significativo (P<0,05) somente para as doses de nitrogênio. No perfilhamento da forrageira houve significância para a interação entre as doses de enxofre, nitrogênio e calcário, no segundo corte. Também houve significância (P<0,05) para as doses de enxofre e nitrogênio no valor SPAD e interação nitrogênio e calcário na área foliar. Na concentração de macro e micronutrientes da planta houve significância (P<0,05) das doses de nitrogênio, enxofre e calcário e interação entre nitrogênio e enxofre e nitrogênio e calcário em alguns componentes da parte aérea. / The present work was carried out with the objective of evaluating responses of Brachiaria decumbens Stapf. grown in a soil from a degraded pasture. The experiment was conducted in a grenhouse in the Departamento de Ciências Biológicas at the "Escola Superior de Agricultura Luiz de Queiroz" - USP. The soil was classified as an Entissol and it was collected from a layer of 0 to 20 cm. The pots were filled with 10 kg of this soil and lime rates were incubated for 60 days. The experimental arrange was a 4x4x3 factorial with nitrogen (0, 180, 630 and 1080 mg kg -1 ), lime (0, 1587.6, 3175.2 and 4762.8 mg kg -1 ) and sulfur (0, 108 and 216 mg kg -1 ), and it was used a randomized complete block design, with three replications. Fertilization with P, K Cu, Zn and S was done at sowing, and N was applied 13 days that. Plants was harvested twice, and plant tops was separated in emergent leaves (EL), laminae of recently expanded leaves (RL), laminae of mature leaves (ML) and culms plus sheaths (CS), Leaf area was determined by measuring EL, LR and ML. SPAD values (chlorophyll content) were evaluated one day before each harvests. The collected material was dried at 65 0 C during 72 hours in an oven with circulating air. The root system was collected and washed following the second harvest. Nutrient concentrations in the forage dry matter and roots were determined after weighting and grinding the samples. Results showed significant effect (P<0.05) for nitrogen supply in the first harvest, and significant interaction for sulfur nitrogen on plant tops dry matter in the first and the second harvests. Roots dry matter had significant (P<0.05) effect for nitrogen rates. Significancies were observed for nitrogen nitrogen X sulfur interaction for SPAD values, for nitrogen X lime for leaf area and for lime X nitrogen X sulfur for plant tillering at second harvest. The nitrogen, sulfur and lime had significant effects on nutrients concentrations, as well as by interaction of nitrogen X sulfur and nitrogen X lime for some parts of plant tops.
