Shifters is a novel that takes place in a city in which humans and humanoid creatures called “shifters” are grown in test-tubes and taught how to live by androids and books. The city belief structure is centered on supernatural beings called Guardians. The Guardians never appear, but are symbolized by a Light above the horizon. Humans and shifters live under oppressive social structures that limit their agency. Most of the city’s inhabitants do not realize they are enslaved by arbitrary systems. The Piglasio children suffered great hardship after the loss of their father and the disappearance of their eldest sister. Raised by a single mother in the ruin of childhoods already long gone, Frances and Michael wrestle with young adulthood, their faith and each other. One runs hundreds of miles away to seek adventure and friendship in Maryland. This thesis is comprised of three short stories that explore the pathologization of perceived social abnormalities and the isolation that often follows. "The Firmament" focuses on ostracization due to social difference, while "Shards" and "A Box of Rocks" focus on a specific 'abnormality'—schizoid personality disorder and high-functioning autism, respectively. These stories are not exact representations of a specific disorder, but my interpretation of the materials that I encountered during my research.

Short stories examining interpersonal relationships, familial relationships and legacies, self-examination. These stories were written in an attempt to understand what it is to come of age in a damaged family, to explore the feelings and events associated with finding oneself.
