This thesis aims to detail the conceptual bases for a new reading of Lacan’s sexuation theory. We intent to investigate the genesis and consequences of the proposition “The sexed being is only authorized by him/herself and by some others”, uttered by Lacan on his seminar Les non-dupes errant, as he describes the formulas of sexuation in terms of a saying. In order to underscore the sexuation’s processual dimension, the concept of identification was turned into a methodological tool as we proceed an analysis of its incidences among the registers of the real, symbolic and imaginary in Lacan’s teaching. On our first chapter, we’ve discussed the sexuation and its parallel with the analyst’s authorization as well as Marcel Proust’s influence on the lacaninan relation between sexed authorization and the question of the group. Gender related social and political struggles were taken as a model of the lacanian notion of group as an “real recently emerged”. On our second chapter, we’ve explored the origins of the notions of signifier (from the idea of symbolic constellation), big Other (initially described as big Others) and symbolic law (and its inseparable relation with the norm in Lévi-Strauss), to indicate how the symbolic alterity that locates the sexed subject’s position is plural and based on the elements’ variability at one given structural system. The last chapter presents the fundamental role of the neighbors on the sexual assumption’s process and discusses the authorization in terms of an anticipation – found in both mirror stage and the logical time’s moment of concluding. Lastly, an analysis of the notion of sinthome has shown the centrality of the act of naming as an instance that knots the three registers of the sexuation

Trace formulas and their applications on Hecke eigenvaluesWang, Yingnan, 王英男 January 2012 (has links)
The objective of the thesis is to investigate the trace formulas and their applications on Hecke eigenvalues, especially on the distribution of Hecke eigenvalues. This thesis is divided into two parts..
In the first part of the thesis, a review is firstly carried out for the equidistribution of Hecke eigenvalues as primes vary and for the expected size of the error term in this equidistribution problem. Then the Kuznetsov trace formula is applied to prove a result on the size of the error term in the asymptotic distribution formula of Hecke eigenvalues. These eigenvalues become equidistributed with respect to the p-adic Plancherel measures as Hecke eigenforms vary. Next, this problem is generalized to Satake parameters of GL2 representations with prescribed supercuspidal local representations. Such a generalization is novel to the case of classical automorphic forms. To achieve this result, a trace formula of Arthur-Selberg type with a couple of key refinements is used.
In the second part of the thesis, a density theorem is proved which counts the number of exceptional nontrivial zeros of a family of symmetric power L-functions attached to primitive Maass forms in the critical strip. In addition, a large sieve inequality of Elliott-Montgomery-Vaughan type for primitive Maass forms is established. The density theorem and large sieve inequality have many applications. For instance, they are used to prove statistical results on Hecke eigenvalues of primitive Maass forms and the extreme values of the symmetric power L-functions attached to primitive Maass forms. / published_or_final_version / Mathematics / Doctoral / Doctor of Philosophy

Application and computation of likelihood methods for regression with measurement errorHigdon, Roger 23 September 1998 (has links)
This thesis advocates the use of maximum likelihood analysis for generalized
regression models with measurement error in a single explanatory variable. This will be
done first by presenting a computational algorithm and the numerical details for carrying
out this algorithm on a wide variety of models. The computational methods will be based
on the EM algorithm in conjunction with the use of Gauss-Hermite quadrature to
approximate integrals in the E-step. Second, this thesis will demonstrate the relative
superiority of likelihood-ratio tests and confidence intervals over those based on
asymptotic normality of estimates and standard errors, and that likelihood methods may
be more robust in these situations than previously thought. The ability to carry out
likelihood analysis under a wide range of distributional assumptions, along with the
advantages of likelihood ratio inference and the encouraging robustness results make
likelihood analysis a practical option worth considering in regression problems with
explanatory variable measurement error. / Graduation date: 1999

On carleman formulas for the dolbeault cohomologyNacinovich, Mauro, Schulze, Bert-Wolfgang, Tarkhanov, Nikolai N. January 1998 (has links)
We discuss the Cauchy problem for the Dolbeault cohomology in a domain of C n with data on a part of the boundary. In this setting we introduce the concept of a Carleman function which proves useful in the study of uniqueness. Apart from an abstract framework we show explicit Carleman formulas for the Dolbeault cohomology.
