The friends they have and the friends they want: desired friendship across the transition into adolescence

Unknown Date (has links)
Previous studies of desired friendship have assessed desired friends with unilateral nominations (when one child chooses another child as a friend, but that friend nomination is not reciprocated). This calls into question the validity of findings suggesting that children want to be friends with others who differ from themselves, but befriend similar others by default (Sijtsema, Lindenberg, & Veenstra, 2010). The current study concerns desired friendships among 195 girls and 147 boys in Grades 4 through 6. Two hypotheses were tested. The first hypothesis was that children will not choose the same unilateral and desired friends. The second hypothesis was that children will be more similar to their reciprocal friends than to their unilateral and desired friends. Questionnaires measured desired friendship, friendship, and child characteristics. Both hypotheses were supported. However, there were group-level differences. The importance of using desired friend nominations to measure desired friends is discussed. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2014. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

The relationship between social phobia, friendship quality, and friendship expectations in high school students

Winton, Samantha Marie 24 February 2012 (has links)
Developmental theorists describe friendship development in terms of stages that mature well into adolescence. The purpose of this prospective study is to investigate the possible differences between high school students, with and without social phobia, and their levels of friendship quality and friendship expectation. It is hypothesized that students with social phobia will have lower quality friendships as well as less mature expectations of friendship compared to students without social phobia. A MANOVA analysis will be utilized to identify interactions between these variables. Gender and grade level differences will also be examined. Implications for treatment supplements are discussed. / text

Sex differences in the stability of children's and adolescents' friendships / Stability of friendships

Christakos, Athena. January 1997 (has links)
The current study was designed to examine sex differences in the stability of same-sex friendships. Based on past research, it was hypothesized that boys have more stable friendship nominations than girls. Four hundred fifty-one elementary and high school students from grades three, four, seven and eight completed questionnaires in which they were asked to nominate their closest friends. Friendship nominations were collected three times over a seventh month period, in the fall, winter and spring of the school year. Partial support was obtained for the hypothesis at the high school level: Adolescent boys had more stable friendship nominations than adolescent girls. No sex differences in stability were evident at the elementary level. At all grade levels, fewer friendship nominations were made at the beginning of the year and friendship stability was lowest over the longer time interval from fall to spring. Results are discussed in terms of the importance of the stability of friendships for peer social support.

Identity and difference in Aristotle's theory of perfect friendship

Kahane, David J (David Joshua), 1962- January 1990 (has links)
This thesis examines how Aristotle's theory of friendship deals with differences between persons, given that his paradigm case is that of friendship between men who are excellent without qualification. I argue that because of his teleological understanding of human virtue, Aristotle believes that such men will share a comprehensive set of affective and rational apprehensions of the good; true friends will love and understand each other because of their identity in virtue. / I establish my interpretation against a rival view, which sees Aristotle as sensitive to the need for attentiveness to and valuation of differences between friends: while I show this latter view to be exegetically untenable, I suggest that it is informed by modern understandings of individual uniqueness which provide the basis for a critique of Aristotle. Finally, I explore the implications of a 'difference' critique of Aristotle for his understanding of the bonds which unite political communities.
