Sustainability Strategies for Nonprofit Organizations During General Economic Downturns

Brown, Lakesha T 01 January 2019 (has links)
Many leaders of nonprofit organizations (NPOs) lack strategies to build and maintain a financially sustainable organization to continue providing vital social services. The purpose of this single case study was to explore the financial strategies some NPO leaders used to maintain financial sustainability during general economic downturns. Five purposively selected leaders of an NPO in northwestern Indiana participated in the study. The resource dependency theory and the change management theory were the conceptual frameworks that guided the study. Data were collected from face-to-face and telephone interviews and a review of company documentation. Member checking was conducted with participants and data triangulation occurred with an analysis of organization documents that reinforced the validity of the findings. Data were analyzed using Yin's 5-step process of coding of participants' responses, including examining, categorizing, tabulating, creating a data display, and testing the data. Data analysis of organizational documents, interview transcripts, and the organization's social media sites revealed 3 themes: partnerships, fundraising, and diversification as the strategies used to maintain financial sustainability during periods of economic downturns. The findings of this study might contribute to positive social change by providing information to NPO leaders to help improve financial strategies and sustainability for community service organizations during general economic downturns and maintain social services.

Risk Capital - Private Equity : Fundraising a Swedish Buyout Fund

Riahi, Linda, Wilson, Amelie January 2011 (has links)
The private equity industry has had a fluctuating history. In the years between 2003 and 2007 the private equity industry expanded tremendously, yet in 2008 a financial turmoil caused significant deviation in the activity of the industry. During the credit crunch the liquidity in the market decreased affecting the sources of capital available. When several firms compete about the capital available, fundraising becomes increasingly difficult and competition intensifies. Sweden is one of the largest private equity markets in Europe and has among the Nordic countries been able to raise the largest amount of funds. The purpose of this study is to examine the fundraising process implemented by private equity firms, nevertheless the relationship that emerges between the fund manager and the investor. The authors’ objective is to provide an adequate interpretation of the private equity industry in Sweden. The authors have implemented a qualitative method, as the objective has been to obtain a profound picture of how private equity firms manage their fundraising. The abductive approach has been used in order to collect empirical data and semi-structured interviews have been carried out with representatives from four private equity firms. In addition, a smaller survey has been performed with two institutional investors to add to the objectivity. Subsequently, the empirical data has been analysed in regards to theory and compared in relation to the sources to end up in a conclusion. The authors have through the study concluded that private equity firms in Sweden with a focus in buyouts not have a common fundraising model. Private equity funds are selective in their choice of investors and prefer professional, loyal investors with a long-term perspective and strong capital base. It has from the analysis emerged that good reputation, history, team and experience is valuable in fundraising. Firms that are successful in their operations and management appeal to investors. The investors are typically institutionalised and invest in different asset classes, hence the diversification is mainly in the hands of the investor.

Simon, Jason Foster 05 1900 (has links)
This quantitative study utilized secondary data furnished by 652 institutions of higher education which participated in the 2008 Voluntary Support of Education (VSE) national study managed by the Council for Aid to Education. This study investigated the relationships among private and public status across baccalaureate, masters and doctoral degree typologies and total alumni giving, restricted giving and unrestricted giving per full time equivalent (FTE) for the 2007/08 academic year. The independent variable included the three degree-granting sub-categories of institution as categorized by either public or private status. The dependent variables included total computed alumni giving for 2008 per FTE, restricted alumni giving for 2008 per FTE and unrestricted giving by alumni for 2008 per FTE. ANOVA main effects were calculated and statistical significance determined using the α < .05 level. Tukey Post-Hoc calculations were computed and Cohen's f 2 was used to determine effect sizes. Total alumni giving per student FTE differed at statistical significance across the six institution types, F (5, 651) = 37.181, p < .001, f 2 = .29. Total restricted giving per student FTE differed at statistical significance across the six types, F (5, 651) = 28.90, p < .001, f 2 = .22. Total unrestricted giving per student FTE differed at statistical significance across the six types, F (5, 651) = 35.371, p < .001, f 2 = .27. This study's restricted giving index documents alumni make differentiated choices concerning gifts based on institution type. Recommendations are issued for further research and professional practice.
