Autobiografičnost v díle režisérek českého animovaného filmu / Autobiographical elements in animated films of Czech female directorsDěcká, Eliška January 2011 (has links)
This MA thesis analyses the use of autobiographical elements in animated films of contemporary female directors. The thesis employs data obtained from in-depth interviews with eight individual directors. As the main methodological tool for conducting these I used oral history. These data were further combined with the gender-specific textual analysis and interpretation of their films, regarding the main principles of animations studies. The goal was to reach a conclusion whether there is any inclination towards the use of autobiographical elements in animated films of Czech female directors. The thesis also contemplates the potential of animation studies in general and its effective use in connection with other academic disciplines. This approach leads towards obtaining findings, outreaching the mere sphere of animation and that may be enriching in the context of political-economic transformation after 1989 in Czechoslovakia/Czech Republic, for example. The brothelization of gender and sexuality in late twentieth-century Latin American narrative and filmWhite, Burke Oliver 24 January 2011 (has links)
The brothel has an important role in Latin American literature and film. The fictional brothel is expected to produce gender in both men and women, but these gendered identities are placed at the extremes within the bordello. This gender extremism creates opposition, or gender transgression, in the characters of twentieth-century Latin American narrative and film. Here I map the brothelized iteration of both genders through prohibitions, taboo, abjection, and violence within various texts and films.
Much of the discipline of this cultural production of gender rests on the body. The body must bear the mark of its gender or the character risks violent consequences. Fatness plays an important role in this sexual economy, because fatness destroys gender, pushing the subject toward an androgyny that other characters reject or hate. Though the brothel has been studied before, it has not been analyzed from this gendered perspective. / text

Memories of Motherland: Gender, Diaspora and National Identity in 1990s Indian Popular CultureSapre, Manasi 05 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines the role of globalization, an open economy and diasporic experiences on the 1990s popular Indian culture, focusing on discourses of gender, national identity and family. Recent Indian beauty queens and international beauty contests are discussed in the context of gendered nationhood in 1990s India. Several popular films of the 1990s are discussed as narratives expressing longing for an extended family and a homogeneous national identity under the leadership of a traditional father figure. In contrast, independent films interrogate the primacy of ethnic and national identity and raise interesting questions about exilic experience. All of these forms of national and popular culture reflect the conflicting and ever-changing anxieties surrounding national identity and the role of women in India.

Not So Elementary: An Examination of Trends in a Century of Sherlock Holmes AdaptationsCamp, Nathan 05 1900 (has links)
This study examines changes over time in 40 different Sherlock Holmes films and 39 television series and movies spanning from 1900 to 2017. Quantitative observations were mixed with a qualitative examination. Perceptions of law enforcement became more positive over time, the types of crime did not vary, and representation of race and gender improved over time with incrementally positive changes in the representation of queer, mentally ill, and physically handicapped individuals. The exact nature of these trends is discussed. Additionally, the trends of different decades are explored and compared. Sherlock Holmes is mostly used as a vehicle for storytelling rather than for the salacious crimes that he solves, making the identification of perceptions of crime in different decades difficult. The reasons for why different Sherlock Holmes projects were created in different eras and for different purposes are discussed.
