The material presented in the body of this thesis is the result of petrographic and mineralographic studies carried out on specimens of peridotite and their associated rock types from various localities in Northern Quebec and Ungava. The major portion of the examination was of a petrographic nature, although a limited amount of polished section work was done on sulphide bearing specimens of ultrabasic rock from some of these same areas.

Lindeman (1917) discussed the iron ore deposits in the area and mentioned that pyrite was found along the footwall of one iron deposit. In later years sporadic work was carried out, but it was concerned mainly with the iron ore and regional mapping (Alcock 1941).

In southern Quebec the Lower Ordovician or Beekmantown series consists of a thick sequence of dolomite beds with minor amounts of sandstone, limestone and shale. By comparison with Lower Ordovician strata elsewhere, the Beekmantown in southern Quebec is relatively unfossiliferous. As a result, interest in the group has been slight. This study is a dissertation on the stratigraphy and palaeontology of the Beekmantown group as exposed in the Quebec portion of the St. Lawrence Lowlands.

The petrology of an ultrametamorphic complex is described. High-grade migmatitic plagioclase gneisses and amphibolites, with quartzites and metamorphic pyroxenites, were intruded sub-concordantly by gabbro. These older rocks were intruded by magmatic plutons of pyroxene-microperthite quartz-monzonite, with hornblende-microperthite quartz-monzonite and migmatitic microcline granite. Late basic sills and granite dykes occur.
