ABSTRACT This research evaluated the application of post consumer glass as a cementing agent in underground mine backfills. The underlying theory indicates that glass is pozzolanic and, when used in finely divided form, reacts as an activator to generate binding products, thus contributing to the development of backfill strength. The objective of the research was to evaluate the strength performance of backfills when Normal Portland Cement (NPC) is replaced with various percentages of post consumer glass. The research evaluated the performance of backfills prepared using tailings from three candidate mines, namely Stobie, David Bell and Kidd Creek. Each backfill was prepared using unique recipes, and the strength and other properties were evaluated at cure times of 7, 14, 28, 56, 112 and 224 days. Laboratory work involved visual, physical and chemical material characterization followed by strength evaluations. Results of strength assessment reveal that glass, when incorporated as part of the binder in backfill development is reactive, and can contribute to the strength of backfill. Further analysis of the results also indicated that the reactivity of glass may be affected by the incorporation of slag within the recipe, the availability of lime and the level of hydration of the binders. The research concluded that, at 15 % glass replacement of NPC, backfill prepared with David Bell tailings, NPC and glass can achieve improved or equivalent strength performance compared to backfill prepared with David Bell tailings and NPC. NPC and slag outperformed backfills prepared with NPC, slag and glass at all replacement levels, using tailings from Kidd Creek and Inco-Stobie. The following utterance is an exploration into the interactive space of glass and the disparity found in metaphors of its transparency. The rhetoric of transparency is initially scrutinized through a story that elaborates, in audacious generalizations, on the totalitarianism that comes out of the atheist rationalism of the Enlightenment. These generalizations are probed specifically in a look at the role of glass architecture and the consequent suppression of the body to a belief in an all-powerful reason. / The inquiry then switches to the operation of the destabilizing effect of a space that devours with its reflections and spatial ambiguities. As absolute transparency is defied by experience in the material world, the space of glass is investigated as an instrument for dissolving the identity of controlling institutions. From the subversive character of reflections, the final look is at the possible emergence of a new attitude and thinking inspired by that experience which does not serve ideological certitudes, but contradicts them.

The aim of this research was to demonstrate the creative potential of a particular type of coloured flat glass. This glass is produced in Russia and is known as Russian glass. The present researcher has refined methods used by Baltic glass artists to create three-dimensional artworks. The examination of the development of glass techniques in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania was necessary in order to identify these methods and to contextualize the researcher’s personal practice. This study describes for the first time the development of glass art techniques in the Baltic States from the 1950s to the present day. A multi-method approach was used to address research issues from the perspective of the glass practitioner. The methods consisted of the development of sketches, models and glass artworks using existing and unique assembling methods. The artworks underlined the creative potential of flat material and gave rise to a reduction in costs. In conjunction with these methods, the case studies focused on the identification of similarities among Baltic glass practices and similarities of approach to using various glass techniques. The collaboration with peers and participation at glass events served to position the researcher’s personal practice in the context of glass art in the Baltic States. The practical results of this research demonstrated the potential of Russian glass in the creation of three-dimensional artworks in several ways. The theoretical results also identified the importance of traditional culture and influences among contemporary Baltic glass artists. Links were established between the researcher’s personal practice and the common principles behind that of Baltic artists. The thesis provides practitioners and glass professionals with a significant body of knowledge. The artworks which form part of this thesis demonstrate the potential of the techniques and, it is to be hoped, pave the way for further investigation and development by other glass practitioners.
