The cross : a long poem using the techniques of numerical composition

Groves, T. C. (Thomas Cameron) January 1994 (has links)
The Cross is a long poem with a numerologically determined structure. In my introduction I examine some of the ideas behind the tradition of literary numerological composition, particularly those presented in the Timaeus of Plato and in Augustine's De musica. I then scrutinize number's aptness as a unifying principle in the poem, briefly elucidating the Golden Proportion and showing its centrality to the poem's structure, concluding with a look at my use of number metaphor. The Cross, partly and wholly the embodiment of these theories, follows. Its subject matter is the history of Montreal. Each book has a unifying focus: Book I centres on Jacques Cartier's explorations in 1535; Book II on the activities of the fictional character Mrs. Chau, in the recent past; and Book III on the visit of the Prince of Wales in 1860 for the inauguration of the Victoria Bridge.

We present, in this work, a survey related to the Golden Section, which was studied by the greeks before the time of Euclid, but that received from him a formal definition called by Extreme and Mean Ratio. We begin by showing that this ratio, known as Golden Ratio, has a rich history that is presented in different contexts. We exhibited the algebraic properties of the number ?, resulting from this ratio, we approached the Method of Golden Section, which allows to find extreme points of functions of one variable and we show its geometric presence in Penrose tiles. We believe that such matters can be dealt with in the classroom in order to arise the interest of students in Mathematics, so, we prepare suggestions for activities to explore these concepts and use diverse strategies / Mestrado / Matemática em Rede Nacional / Mestra em Matemática em Rede Nacional

Musica Stellarum

Gillam, Robert Wesley January 2016 (has links)
Musica Stellarum is an original composition for full symphony orchestra. It seeks to evoke the life of a star from its birth in a gaseous nebula to its death as a massive supernova using musical parallels. The chemical processes involved in stellar nucleosynthesis are represented through an exploration of TC relationships. Lighter elements are represented by smaller pitch class sets and as they combine together through processes such as inversion and transposition, larger, "heavier" sets are created. Elements of Sonata Form and a strong structural emphasis on Golden Section (GS) relationships are also major features of Musica Stellarum. Section and phrase length are determined by GS measurements of time. This piece also uses delayed aggregate completion to build tension. Inspired by a theory by astrophysicist Dr. Adam Burrows, who argued that supernovae could be triggered by sound waves resonating at approximately F4, the F above middle C is used to complete the aggregate at the climax of the piece.
