Castro, Vanessa Sousa, 1978- January 2006 (has links)
Eighteen Landrace x Large White crossbred piglets, with an average initial weight of 16.01 kg, were used in trial 1 (digestibility); 60 piglets, with an average initial weight of 7.11 kg were used in trial 2 (performance); and 10 piglets, with an average initial weight of 23.38 kg, were used in trial 3 (metabolism). In all trials a randomized block design was employed. The treatments were as follows. Trial 1: T1 - reference diet (100%); T2 - reference diet (70%) plus dry, ground corn grain (DGCG) (30%); T3 - reference diet (70%) plus HMCS (30%). Trial 2: T1 - diets using DGCG; T2 - diets based on HMCS as a total replacement of DGCG entirely; T3 - diets based on HMCS, considering the digestible energy content of HMCS measured in trial 1; T4 - diets based on HMCS, considering the contents digestible energy, digestible protein and available phosphorus of HMCS, as measured in trial 1. In trial 3: T1 - diet based on HCGM as a total replacement of DGCG, on a dry matter basis; and T2 - ration based on HMCS, considering the contents of digestible energy, digestible protein and available phosphorus of HMCS, as measured in trial 1. In trial 1, higher (P<0.05) digestibility coefficients of dry matter, crude protein, phosphorus and calcium were found for HMCS. In trial 2, the treatments using HMCS showed better (P<0.06) food conversion and lower cost per kg gained, during the first 10 dias, as well as during whole experimental period; however, no differences were observed for daily weight gain or daily food intake. In trial 3, a difference (P<0.05) was observed only for ingested nitrogen and phosphorus. The digestibility trial underestimated the nutritional value of HMCS estimated in the performance trial. / Mestre
