Long- and Short-Term Dynamics of the Wetlands in the Amboseli Savanna Ecosystem, Kenya

The wetlands of the semi-arid savanna ecosystem of Amboseli are the critical dry-season range for a diverse wildlife population, as well as for livestock and humans. Changes in the migratory patterns and increases in the population of the elephants in the ecosystem, as well as a shift in the lifestyle of the growing human population from predominantly nomadic pastoralist society to a sedentary agrarian community, has had far-reaching effects on the ecosystem and the wetlands. In this thesis, the current status of the wetlands and the changes in vegetation over the last four decades were examined using satellite imagery and long-term census data. Studies were also conducted to determine the impact of grazing by elephants and other large mammals on wetland vegetation, and the flooding patterns and extents of some of the wetlands were examined. <br /><br /> Long-term aerial count data indicated that the wetlands that are currently protected by the Amboseli National Park have been under increasing use year-round by elephants since 1975. These wetlands showed a rapid increase in extent between 1950 and 1976. This corresponds to the elephant-driven decline in <I>Acacia xanthophloea</I> woodlands, which may have changed the hydrology of the area. Since then, only one of the wetlands, Longinye, has shown dynamic changes in extent. This is either the effect of the blockage of water flow by vegetation or the creation of new channels by elephants and hippopotami. The wetlands had a diverse range of wetland habitat from areas of open water with scattered tall <I>Cyperus papyrus</I> communities in the centre of one wetland to large expanses of seasonally inundated <I>C. laevigatus</I> and <I>Cynodon dactylon</I> dominated habitats fringing the wetlands. Most of the wetland habitats were composed of short sedges and grasses, which was shown to be the direct result of elephant grazing. Elephants tended to keep the vegetation of a control wetland short and of low biomass during both wet and dry seasons, whereas the vegetation in a treatment wetland, where elephants were excluded, showed a rapid increase in biomass and height. Other herbivores were shown to maintain conditions of short vegetation of low biomass through grazing pressure in the dry season. The impact of natural and simulated grazing on growth of the vegetation was studied and only under simulated grazing pressure was growth increased in the seasonally inundated <I>C. dactylon</I> grasslands, as well as the floating mat communities dominated by <I>C. laevigatus</I> that occur in the shallow water wetlands. This indicates that natural grazing may be detrimental either to the plants or the soil. <br /><br /> The wetlands that are under human use had predominantly shallow water and seasonal wetland habitat. Deep water habitat with <I>C. papyrus</I> communities was only present in one of these wetlands, Kimana, which is also the only wetland outside the park that is used by livestock and wildlife, as well as to irrigate a large area of land around the wetland. Two other wetlands, Namelok and Lenkir that were predominantly used for irrigated agriculture, were largely composed of seasonally inundated wetland habitat. A fourth wetland, Esoitpus, has been almost completely drained and this has most likely resulted in the development of <I>A. xanthophloea</I> and <I>C. dactylon</I> dominated riverine and <I>C. laevigatus</I> / <I>C. dactylon</I> dominated seasonally inundated wetland communities. <br /><br /> Overall, the wetlands in the park provide a measure of habitat diversity that may be useful for various invertebrate and vertebrate communities. However, the present lack of tall sedges may negatively impact the bird community. This state can be reversed by the exclusion of elephants from some wetlands for short periods of time. On the other hand, the wetlands outside the park appear to be facing rapid draw-down. Hence, there is an urgent need for sound water management practices for these wetlands.

Nonsmooth Dynamics in Two Interacting, Impacting Pendula

<p>This thesis reviews the experimental investigation of a non-smooth dynamical system consisting of two pendula; a large pendulum attached to a frame with an impact wall, and a small pendulum, which shares its axis of rotation with the large pendulum and can impact against the large pendulum. The system is forced with a sinusoidal horizontal motion, and due to the nonlinearities present in pendula as well as the discontinuous forcing from impacts, exhibits a wide range of behavior. Periodic, quasi-periodic, and chaotic responses all are possible, hysteresis is present, and grazing bifurcations allow for spontaneous change of behavior and the appearance of chaotic responses without following a traditional route to chaos. This thesis follows from existing non-linear dynamics research on forced pendula, impacting systems (such as a bouncing ball) and doubly impacting systems (ball bouncing on top of a bouncing ball).</p> / Thesis

Physiological indicators of tick-induced stress in grazing

Three studies utilizing a single group of growing beef steers were conducted to ascertain the effects of tick stress on cattle and to evaluate the use of bio-forensic techniques of detection. Steers (n = 28, 194 ± 3.0 kg) were randomly assigned to one of four treatments in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement: moderate (14.0 ± 1.0% CP, 60 ± 1.5% TDN) versus low (7.0 ± 1.0% CP, 58 ± 1.5% TDN) plane of nutrition, and control (no tick) versus tick treatment (300 pair of adult (Amblyomma americanum) per treated animal). Steers were individually fed experimental diets ad libitum for 35 days prior to and 21 days following the start of tick infestation (day 0), with peak tick feeding occurring 10 to 14 days post tick infestation. In study 1, blood was sampled on day -7, 0, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 13, 17 and 21, and plasma analyzed for metabolic and endocrine indicators. Within the low plane of nutrition, IGF-1 (ng/ml) was greater in control (P < 0.05) than in the tick treated (139.57 ± 9.3 vs 111.4 ± 9.3) group. Within the moderate plane of nutrition, tick treated cattle had higher (P < 0.05) plasma cortisol than nontreated. In study 2, fecal samples were analyzed for metabolic, endocrine and immunologic indicators. Fecal cortisol was the only constituent measured that was affected by treatment and not by plane of nutrition. The highest average daily fecal cortisol observed was for day 13, during peak tick feeding and after six days of repeated blood sampling. In study 3, near infrared spectra were obtained in the 1100-2498 nm range. Spectra were assembled into groups by plane of nutrition, treatment, and by plane of nutrition by treatment. Periods of 7 ± 1 days correspond to significant delineations in the tick feeding cycle. There were differences in pre-infestation versus infestation fecal spectra within the tick treated groups in both the moderate and low planes of nutrition. These differences can not be wholly attributed to tick treatment, but may have also been affected by blood sampling stress.

Desertification of high latitude ecosystems: conceptual models, time-series analyses and experiments

Ecosystem degradation in Iceland has been severe since man arrived 1100 years ago. Birch woodlands cover has declined from 25% of the land area, to only 1%. The deforestation is considered to be the initial stage in the land degradation process, followed by surface destabilization, and later erosion. The objective of this study was to quantify and evaluate factors that contribute to the early stages of land degradation in Icelandic ecosystems. Specific objectives were to improve our understanding of how livestock grazing might initiate early degradation stages, elucidate field-based landscape metrics useful for characterizing degradation stages, and to determine if landscape metrics obtained from remote sensing data can be used to detect landscape structure changes and identify degraded and at risk rangelands in real time over extensive and remote areas. A State-and-Transition conceptual model was constructed for the experimental area to identify potential key processes in the degradation sequence, and to formalize research questions. Experimental plots were established in five plant community types representing a space-for-time degradation sequence. Birch seedling (Betula pubescens Ehrh.) growth and survival was reduced with repeated clipping treatment applied to simulate browsing, but the amount of decline varied with plant community type. This suggests that continuous grazing may contribute to deforestation, as regeneration will be reduced over time. Intense grazing treatments, simulating both grazing and trampling, increased surface instability and soil loss compared to grazing only or control, suggesting that intense grazing may contribute to surface destabilization and therefore to land degradation. Erosion appeared to be active in the most intense treatments, also within the woodlands. The data indicate that the woodlands may have lower resilience than the other plant communities as treatment effects appeared quicker there. The woodlands may thus be particularly vulnerable to intense grazing. The landscape metrics used to quantify changes in landscape surface properties over a 51 year period yielded inconclusive results, either because of data limitations or because of non-detectable erosion activity. The results do generally support the proposed S&T model for the experimental area. It is concluded that grazing may contribute to woodland decline, and intensify degradation processes.

The effect of twice-over rotational cattle grazing on the ground beetles (Coleoptera: Carabidae) and spiders (Araneae) on the Yellow Quill Mixed Grass Prairie Preserve

The Yellow Quill Mixed Grass Prairie Preserve is a remnant of an endangered community that is located in southwestern Manitoba and owned by The Nature Conservancy of Canada. In 2005 and 2006, this study was conducted to investigate the effect that the currently-practiced twice-over rotational cattle grazing regime is having on the carabid beetles and spiders. This study primarily compared grazed and ungrazed treatments on three paddocks. A secondary experiment investigated whether the spring graze, fall graze, or the combination of the two had the greatest impact on the carabids and spiders. Three periods were examined in three periods each season: before grazing had begun, after the spring graze, and after the fall graze. A total of 81 species of carabids and 156 species of spiders were recorded, including potentially new provincial records (two carabid species and 20 spider species). Seventy two species of plants were recorded in the study.

Herbage productivity and goat performance from legume-seeded pasture (fodder banks) managed by small-scale farmers in Nigeria

This study was conducted on the grazing of West African Dwarf (WAD) goats managed by 41 farmers in Nigeria. The study focused on the use of "fodder banks" by small-scale farmers. The objective of the research was to determine the effect of seeding Stylosanthes hamata on herbage productivity and goat performance under three grazing management systems: tethering (conventional), free grazing natural pasture or free grazing legume-seeded pasture (fodder bank). / Irrespective of the system of management, goats grazing the various pastures had a weaning weight of 6.0 $ pm$ 0.3 kg. At 6, 9 and 12 months the body weights were 9.3 $ pm$ 0.41, 11.7 $ pm$ 1.36 and 12.6 $ pm$ 0.73 kg, resulting from an average daily gain (ADG) of 49.0 $ pm$ 4.0, 33.4 $ pm$ 4.0, 31.0 $ pm$ 0.1 and 25.0 $ pm$ 0.03 g day$ sp{-1}$ for the growth periods of birth to 3 months (pre-weaning) 3-6, 3-9, and 3-12 month (post-weaning) growth periods, respectively. There were no significant differences among the grazing systems with regard to birth weights and 3-month body weight (weaning weight). However, during the 3 to 6-month growth period, the ADG of goats tethered on natural pasture was higher than that observed for goats grazing S. hamata seeded pasture or fenced natural pasture, but this difference disappeared with time. At the 12-month period goats grazing fodder banks were heavier than goats tethered on natural pasture during the late wet season period, but the effect was not significant. Although animals lost weight during the late rainy season, animals grazing fodder banks seemed to have lost less weight than those grazing natural pasture. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)

Aspects of growth dynamics of bilberry/blaeberry (Vaccinium myrtillus L.)

In Scotland, bilberry is well known as a member of the dwarf shrub community on moorlands, which provide valuable habitats for wildlife. Recently it has been envisaged that bilberry populations could play an important role in improving the dwarf shrub vegetation in degraded moorland areas. This study was therefore undertaken to investigate the above-ground growth dynamics of bilberry with emphasis on responses to grazing by sheep and seedling establishment. The leaf production of bilberry was increased by higher nitrogen availability. High nitrogen supply also led to greater activation of dormant buds. Abortion of buds was less when nitrogen was continuously supplied. The reproductive capacity of bilberry was shown to be decreased by herbage removal. In contrast flowering was increased following supply of high nitrogen in glasshouse conditions. Almost all the flowers developed into fruits in the field, but a very low production of fruits was reported from bilberry plants that were grown in the glasshouse. Results of a series of laboratory experiments on seed production, germination, seed storage and evaluation of a moorland seed bank confirmed that the scanty seedling recruitment of bilberry was due to the limited production of 'germinable' seeds in berries and risks imposed by the environment after dispersal particularly when seeds are in the litter layer and/or soil. This could suggest that limited picking of bilberry fruits would not have a detrimental effect on establishment of bilberry populations in moorlands. Therefore, areas could be identified which were suitable for public access and berry exploitation in Scotland. The berry production was estimated approximately to be about 3220-9660 tones per year in this zone.

Optimizing the nitrogen supply of prairie organic agriculture with green manures and grazing

Grazing and no-till management in organic systems have been recently proposed tools to improve nutrient cycling and sustainability. From 2008 to 2012 a series of field experiments were established to identify green manure species and green manure management options to maximize N benefit to following cash crops and explore the opportunities to reduce tillage during the green manure phase of an organic rotation. A total of four green manure systems (double-cropped green manures, relay-cropped green manures, full season green manures, and catch crops after grazed full season green manures), three green manure management options (soil incorporation, grazing and no-till), and 10 green manure species, as well as, three green manure mixtures were tested. Double-cropped pea (Pisum sativum cv. 40-10) and relay-cropped red clover (Trifolium pratense) produced around 900 kg ha-1 and 2000 kg ha-1 of biomass respectively. The greatest biomass producing full season green manures were hairy vetch (Vicia villosa L.), pea/oat (Avena sativa cv. Leggett/Pisum sativum cv. 40-10) and sweet clover (Mellilotus officinalis cv. Norgold). Pea/oat and hairy vetch were the most weed competitive species and on average contained less than 15% weed biomass. Among all the systems and managements tested, nitrogen availability was greatest when full season green manures were grazed. On average grazing increased soil NO3-N by 25% compared to soil incorporation using tillage. Among grazed species, pea/oat mix and hairy vetch green manures resulted in the greatest amount of soil available NO3-N. Catch crops after grazing green manures, regardless of the species, significantly reduced N leaching risk compared to no catch crop treatment, but also reduced wheat productivity the following year. Catch crop biomass productivity and N uptake, soil NO3-N, and wheat productivity were similar in direct seeded and conventionally seeded plots. Grazing may be an effective tool in reducing tillage in organic agriculture because of its ability to accelerate the N mineralization from catch crop biomass. This study was the first study to use grazing as a management tool for green manures in organic systems. Results provide strong evidence that green manures, especially when grazed, can be effective nitrogen suppliers in organic grain based rotations.

Pathways and processes of phosphorus loss from pastures grazed by sheep

Sheep producers in Victoria are applying more phosphorus (P) fertiliser and increasing stocking rates to increase production. At the same time, there is increasing awareness amongst research, community and producer groups that P-rich runoff water from agricultural land can contribute to the growth of undesirable algal blooms in surface waters. The loads, concentrations and forms of P in surface and subsurface hydrological flow pathways were estimated or measured directly on high and low P fertility hill slope plots in south-west Victoria to assess how this practice change could affect the P status of runoff and drainage water. Small plot rainfall simulator studies were also conducted to investigate pasture management treatment effects. The spatial and temporal distribution of P loss from hillslope pastures, and the processes of P mobilisation in runoff identified in this study were used to identify appropriate management practises to help minimise P losses in runoff. Runoff P concentrations were then related to properties of pasture soils and runoff at a range of locations across Victoria to identify whether simple models and/or soil P tests could be used to predict P concentrations in runoff.
