The distribution and seasonal availability of surface water on the Manyeleti Game Reserve, Limpopo Province, South AfricaCronje, HP, Cronje, I, Botha, AJ 13 October 2005 (has links)
The availability and abundance of surface water on the Manyeleti Game Reserve was
quantified to provide information towards the development of a water provision policy.
A total of 696 water source sites were located with a mean distance of 223.3 m apart.
The water source sites (natural and artificial) were monitored seasonally to describe the
seasonal availability of surface water on the Manyeleti Game Reserve. There were significant
relationships between seasonal rainfall and the number of water source sites and
maximum distance between sites. The large number of water sources is regulated by climatic
progression and thus water provision on the Manyeleti Game Reserve follows a
natural cycle linked primarily to rainfall. Water sources that dry up towards the dry seasons
need to be supplied with water during drought periods in order to maintain game
numbers without causing rangeland degradation. A water provision model that incorporates
all the variables of the Greater Kruger Park Conservation Area, with particular reference
to the smaller conservation areas within it, should become a research priority.

The effect of the haemolymph protein apolipophorin-III on the antimicrobial responses of the insect Galleria mellonella to the bacterium, Bacillus subtilis /Zakarian, Robert J. January 2002 (has links)
Apolipophorin-III (apoLp-III) is known to influence the haemocyte-mediated induction of antimicrobial peptides in Galleria mellonella and yeast phagocytosis, bind to Gram-negative and Gram positive bacteria and limit the activation of the haemocytes and the prophenoloxidase system by bacterial surface antigens. The effects of apoLp-III on haemocyte adhesion to glass slides and to bacteria were herein examined. ApoLp-III bound to haemocytes limiting the adhesion of both granular cells and plasmatocytes to glass and the contact of the plasmatocytes with Bacillus subtilis. The percentage of granular cells with bacteria was increased by the protein. However, the total number of bacteria adhering to haemocytes in vitro declined in the presence of apoLp-III. Bacterial removal from the haemolymph in vivo by the haemocytes was slowed by the protein. / The adhesion of both the granular cells and plasmatocytes to slides was decreased by inhibiting protein tyrosine kinase and increased by inhibiting protein kinase A (PKA) and protein kinase C (PKC) activity. The latter was confirmed with haemocytes inhibited by the general PKC inhibitor H-7 using phorbol-3-myfstate (PMA) which, by activating PKC, diminished the adhesion of both haemocyte types. Limiting the formation of PKC activation by diacylglycerides which is produced by phosholipase C (PLC), using PLC inhibitor also increased haemocyte attachment. Although binding of B. subtilis to haemocytes decreased PKC activity, the effect of apoLp-III on PKC was inconclusive.

The vegetation ecology of Mfabeni peat swamp, St Lucia, KwaZulu-NatalVenter, Catharina Elizabeth 09 May 2005 (has links)
A vegetation survey, on the plant community level of organization, was conducted on the Mfabeni swamp on the eastern shores of Lake St Lucia. The survey included both the sedge/grass swamp and the swamp forest. Mfabeni swamp is a peatland with peat up to 10m in depth. Except for limited studies in Lesotho and KwaZulu-Natal, this is a first vegetation survey on the plant community level of peatland vegetation in southern Africa. Total floristic composition and habitat information were recorded in 214 sample plots, fully referenced by GPS for GIS mapping. The data were captured in the TURBOVEG data base for vegetation data, classified using the TWINSPAN numerical classification algorithm and phytosociological tables were compiled using the MEGATAB computerized table management program. Fourteen plant communities were identified, characterized by diagnostic and dominant species, described, and the localities noted by GIS. The data were also processed by the PCOrd numerical ordination program and the axes of the resulting ordination diagrams were related to environmental conditions. This gave an indication of the environmental factors controlling the existence and distribution patterns of the different plant communities. An ordination was run on the habitat data collected to further illustrate the relationship between the plant communities and environmental variables. It seems that water depth, seasonality of the water depth and certain water chemical properties, such as pH conductivity and dissolved oxygen content of the water play an important role in determining floristic composition and therefore plant community type in the Mfabeni swamp. / Dissertation (MSc(Botany))--University of Pretoria, 2006. / Plant Science / unrestricted

We performed greater occipital nerve blocks on 24 migraineurs with unilateral migraine and trigeminal nerve distribution allodynia. Using a visual analog scale for migraine pain, brush allodynia in the trigeminal nerve distribution and photophobia were reduced 64%, 75%, and 67%, respectively, after 5 minutes. Allodynia improved faster than headache. The results of this study suggest that greater occipital nerve blocks initiate an inhibitory process that shuts down several symptom generators.
