Gross capital flows : the influence of stock of international assets, financial openness, exchange rate and reserve accumulation under extreme events

Ramírez Venegas, Sebastián Ignacio 07 1900 (has links)
This paper analyzes the determinants of extreme events in gross capital ows. In particular, it focuses on the role of stock of international assets, nancial openness, exchange rate and reserves accumulation in the occurrence of extreme capital in ows events (stops and surges) and their in uence in joint compensation events (retrenchment given stops and ight given surges). For this purpose, this work estimates multinomial logit models. The results sug- gest that global factors (push factors), in particular, global risk, are signi cantly associated with extreme capital in ow episodes. On the other hand, country speci c factors (pull factors) are relevant for compensatory events, in particular, for the stock of international assets.

An estimate of the provincial gross domestic product at factor cost by industry of origin for British Columbia, 1961

Ohki, Takashi January 1966 (has links)
The purposes of this thesis are to investigate the possibility of applying concepts used in national income accounts to regional income accounts, and to estimate the provincial Gross Domestic Product at factor cost by industry of origin for British Columbia in 1961. Some fundamental concepts of national income accounts such as Gross Domestic Product, Gross National Product, factor costs, and market prices are discussed as to their applicability to regional income accounts. Considering conceptual and statistical requirements for regional economic analyses, Gross Domestic Product at factor cost by industry of origin is chosen as the best feasible concept for the estimation of the provincial income account of British Columbia. Three traditional approaches to the measurement of provincial income accounts are discussed. The expenditure approach is abandoned because it has a statistical difficulty in estimating exports and imports accounts on a provincial basis. The income approach is also abandoned because it contains a statistical problem of assigning corporate profits of Canada-wide multi-establishment firms to provinces. Finally, the value-added-by industry approach is examined, and the method based on this approach is employed in this thesis to estimate the provincial Gross Domestic Product at factor cost by industry of origin for British Columbia in 1961. The method employed involves breaking down national aggregates of Gross Domestic Product originating in industry groups to those originating in component industries, and then allocating them to British Columbia according to some related provincial indicators. In breaking down the national aggregates, the 1949 industrial weights measured in Gross Domestic Product at factor cost are used. The main reason of this process is to avoid a product mix problem arising from differences in industrial structures in different provinces. We chose as provincial indicators provincial economic statistics which are as close to the net value added by industry concept as available data permit. Two studies of estimating regional income accounts are reviewed. For each industry, data used to estimate the provincial Gross Domestic Product at factor cost are discussed, together with the resulting estimates. The estimates are presented for each industry and industry group, and the sum of these estimates, that is, the provincial Gross Domestic Product at factor cost for British Columbia in 1961, is 3,333,000,000 current dollars. / Arts, Faculty of / Vancouver School of Economics / Graduate

Conservative high order collocation methods for nonlinear Schrödinger equations

Riera, Pau January 2021 (has links)
In this thesis, we investigate the numerical solution of time-dependent nonlinear Schrödinger equations (more specifically, the Gross-Pitaevskii equation) that appear in the modeling of Bose-Einstein condensates. Since the model is known to conserve important physical invariants, such as mass and energy of the condensate, our goal is to study the importance of reproducing the conservation on the discrete level. The reliability of conservative, compared to non-conservative, methods shall be studied through high order collocation methods for the time discretization and finite element-based space discretizations. In particular, this includes symplectic discontinuous Galerkin time-stepping methods, as well as Continuous Petrov-Galerkin methods. The methods shall be tested for a problem with a known analytical solution, namely two interacting solitons in 1D. This problem is a suitable choice due to its high sensitivity to oscillations of the energy and difficulty to approximate for large time scales.

Seasonal Variation in Whole Stream Metabolism across Varying Land Use Types

Hart, Adam Michael 21 June 2013 (has links)
Historically, whole stream open channel metabolism has been measured over short periods in conjunction with nutrient injections to assess nutrient dynamics within streams. The purpose of my study was to understand the seasonal changes in metabolism within and among streams as well as the impacts of different land use. This was addressed by monitoring nine different watersheds in the Little Tennessee River watershed in southwestern North Carolina. The nine study watersheds were selected to represent a gradient of forested, agricultural, and developed land use / land cover types. Data loggers were deployed to collect continuous oxygen, temperature, conductivity, and stage height data from 2010-2011. I used these data to estimate gross primary production (GPP) and ecosystem respiration (ER). GPP and ER were compared to stream chemistry, light, land cover, and storms. I found that there is greater influence of local riparian land cover than watershed land cover on GPP and ER. Streams had varying annual GPP, but generally the peak in GPP occurred in late winter- early spring with lows in fall. GPP was most strongly influenced by the amount of available light, which is directly related to the amount of canopy cover. ER was much more variable than GPP within and among streams but generally peaked in summer and was lowest in the winter. ER was most strongly related to the proportion of agricultural land cover in the local riparian area. My results suggest that local riparian vegetation may have a greater impact on metabolism than mountainside development. / Master of Science

Small-Scale Farming in Saint Ann, Jamaica: A Cross-Section Analysis of Gross Cash Income on a Selected Number of Farms

Thompson, Ronald A. 11 1900 (has links)

This study appraises the significance of a selected number of variables - economic demographic, and physical - in explaining the inter-farm variation in gross cash income on a sample of small-scale multiple enterprize farms, Jamaica, West Indies. Chapter I outlines the purpose and methodology of the analysis, while Chapter II describes the physical geography and farming systems of the area. A review of literature germane to the main body of the study is covered in Chapter III. Specifying a model that traces out the relative significance of those variables which are hypothesized as influences on the inter-farm variation in gross cash income is the focus of Chapter IV. The final chapter summarizes and interprets the main findings of the study.
/ Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)
