In this work the infrared absorption of neutron irradiated silicon was compared to that of non-irradiated silicon at room and liquid nitrogen temperatures. It was found that instead of the 1.75 micron absorption band that has been mentioned in numerous papers transmission was completely cut off below about 2.5 microns at room temperature and about 1.8 microns at liquid nitrogen temperature. A weak absorption band was noted at 4.4 microns for all three samples at liquid nitrogen temperature and the two irradiated samples at room temperature. Absorption due to free carriers depressed at the longer wavelengths (10-15 microns) with irradiation and cooling as was expected from past experiments. The resistivity of Si₄ increased from an assumed initial value of 10³ ohm-om to 1.89 x 10⁵ ohm-om. / Master of Science

Grounded Figure: A Winery

The nature of figure-ground relationships and their potential for use as a tool for architectural composition was investigated through the design of a winery. Included in the winery were facilities accomodating both the production and consumption of wine. These programmatic elements were used as guides for the development of multiple figure-ground relationships at a variety of scales. In addition, the dialogue between different figures as well as the careful development of the backdrop surfaces were topics of study. Several design strategies were employed to create relationships between figure elements and their backdrops, including the insertion of volumes into and through one another, the careful development of material and surface, and light. From this work, as well as previous projects, several key findings can now be articulated concerning the potential use of figure-ground relationships in the development of a work of architecture. These include the need to optimize the proportion of figure(s) relative to a given background and the key role that the disposition of figures relative to one another plays in the development of a meaningful figure-ground relationship. / Master of Architecture

Application of Electromagnetic Methods to Identify and Characterize Sub-surface Structures Associated with the Coles Hill Uranium Deposit

The Coles Hill uranium deposit in Pittsylvania County, Virginia represents the largest unmined uranium resource in the United States, with an estimated resource of 110 million pounds of U3O8 in place with a cutoff grade of 0.025 wt% U3O8. The deposit is localized along a geologic unit that parallels the Chatham Fault, which separates the Triassic Danville Basin to the east from the older crystalline rocks to the west. The location of the Chatham Fault is important to understanding distribution of ore and for developing an effective mine plan. In this study the Chatham Fault location has been inferred from ground conductivity and ground penetrating radar (GPR) surveys. Anomalies in the data are consistent with previously mapped fault locations based on drillhole and geophysical data, such as gravity and magnetic surveys, collected in the 1980s. These results confirm that the strike of the Chatham Fault is approximately N40ºE and dips to the southeast with dip values ranging from 70º, in the northeast, to 50º, in the southwest. / Master of Science

International Telemetering Conference Proceedings / October 25-28, 1999 / Riviera Hotel and Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada / In 1998, AlliedSignal Technical Services (ATSC) installed three fully autonomous 13-meter satellite tracking systems for the Integrated Program Office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) at the Command and Data Acquisition Station near Fairbanks, Alaska. These systems track and command NOAA Polar Orbiting Weather Satellites and Defense Meteorological Satellites. Each tracking system operates for extended periods of time with little intervention other than periodic scheduling contacts. Schedule execution initiates equipment configuration, including establishing the RF communications link to the satellite. Station autonomy is achieved through use of a robust scheduler that permits remote users and the System Administrator to request pass activities for any of the supported missions. Spacecraft in the mission set are scheduled for normal operations according to the priority they have been assigned. Once the scheduler resolves conflicts, it builds a human-readable control script that executes all required support activities. Pass adds or deletes generate new schedule scripts and can be performed in seconds. The systems can be configured to support CCSDS and TDM telemetry processing, but the units installed at Fairbanks required only telemetry and command through-put capabilities. Received telemetry data is buffered on disk-storage for immediate, post-pass playback, and also on tape for long-term archiving purposes. The system can autonomously support up to 20 spacecraft with 5 different configuration setups each. L-Band, S-Band and X-Band frequencies are supported.

Effects of aging on figure-ground perception: Convexity context effects and competition resolution

We examined age-related differences in figure-ground perception by exploring the effect of age on Convexity Context Effects (CCE; Peterson & Salvagio, 2008). Experiment 1, using Peterson and Salvagio's procedure and black and white stimuli consisting of 2 to 8 alternating concave and convex regions, established that older adults exhibited reduced CCEs compared to younger adults. Experiments 2 and 3 demonstrated that this age difference was found at various stimulus durations and sizes. Experiment 4 compared CCEs obtained with achromatic stimuli, in which the alternating convex and concave regions were each all black or all white, and chromatic stimuli in which the concave regions were homogeneous in color but the convex regions varied in color. We found that the difference between CCEs measured with achromatic and colored stimuli was larger in older than in younger adults. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that the senescent visual system is less able to resolve the competition among various perceptual interpretations of the figure-ground relations among stimulus regions.

Three essays in applied microeconomics on the topics of crime, pollution, and national parks.

acase@tulane.edu / I present three essays in applied microeconomics. In the first, I use police records to explore whether changing self defense policies, known as Stand Your Ground, have differential effects across race. I find that implementing these policies leads to an additional 1.611 monthly killings of black Alleged Perpetrators of Crimes, 70.8 percent of whom are killed by black citizens, while only causing an additional 0.345 monthly killings of white Alleged Perpetrators, 97.7 percent of whom are killed by white citizens. In the second, I examine the causal relationship between waterborne uranium exposure and birth outcomes in order to more fully understand the external costs of the activities that increase the probability of human exposure to uranium. I find that waterborne uranium contamination does not cause an observable decrease in human capital endowment proxies. In the third, I estimate the national average passive use value for Alaskan National Parks. I find that respondents are willing to pay $115 to $409 for a 5 percent expansion of the Denali National Park. / 1 / Michael Steven Spanbauer
