A análise crítica da obra é desenvolvida à luz dos mais recentes estudos da Teoria da História da Literatura, campo do conhecimento que tem se ampliado a partir das últimas décadas do século XX. Nesse sentido, investigamos os pressupostos teóricos e procedimentos metodológicos que norteiam a escrita historiográfica do autor, identificando, por exemplo, quais os principais posicionamentos críticos por ele assumidos, qual o conceito de literatura que embasa a construção de sua pesquisa, quais os critérios empregados na constituição do cânone literário rio-grandense, bem como questões relativas à apresentação e desenvolvimento formal dessa obra, fonte imprescindível para aqueles que se dedicam ao estudo da literatura do Rio Grande do Sul. / This dissertation examines História da literatura do Rio Grande do Sul (1956), by Guilhermino Cesar, with the claim to the understanding of the writing process of southern literature history, which is justified in view of the importance of these studies since the end of the 1960’s. The critical analysis will be developed in the light of the most recent studies in literature history theory, this field of knowledge that has expanded from the last few decades of th 20th century. Accordingly, the investigation assumptions theoretical and methodological procedures that guide the historiographical writing of the author, identifying, for example, what are the main critical positions made, which concept of literature embodies the construction of his research, which criteria is applied in the constitution of Rio Grande do Sul’s literary canon, as well as issues regarding the presentation and formal development of this significant masterpiece in southern literary historiography.
