CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior / This work presents procedures for modeling a Buck-Boost converter based on offline parametric identification techniques, with employment of black box and gray box models. For the identification of the control-to-output-voltage transfer function, the nonlinear Hammerstein model is employed, a particularly interesting structure to identify DC-DC converters for its ability to incorporate nonlinear static characteristic aside from the dynamic behavior of the plant. The identification of the mentioned transfer function is achieved from input and output data, obtained in simulations. In order to identify transfer function parameters, a restricted least squares algorithm is used. As for the identification of the control-to-inductor-current transfer function, a linear black box first order model is considered, with its parameters being determined from systemâs frequency response. In order to show the modelâs utility, a control system is designed based on the identified expressions. The control system employed is the digital version of type 3 compensator for the voltage loop and type 2 compensator for the current loop, both operating under or logics. The identification results of the system presented excellent agreement between the obtained parametric models and the converterâs behavior, showing the reliability of the identification techniques employed in this work. Furthermore, the control system designed from the identified transfer functions presented good performance, providing stability and quick disturbance rejection, bolstering the validity of parametric identification methods applied to the Buck-Boost converter. / Este trabalho apresenta procedimentos para a modelagem de um conversor Buck-Boost com base em tÃcnicas de identificaÃÃo paramÃtricas offline com emprego de modelos matemÃticos tipo caixa preta e caixa cinza. Para a identificaÃÃo da funÃÃo de transferÃncia que relaciona a tensÃo de saÃda e a razÃo cÃclica, à empregado o modelo nÃo linear de Hammerstein, estrutura particularmente interessante para aplicaÃÃo em identificaÃÃo de conversores CC-CC por incorporar a caracterÃstica estÃtica nÃo linear da planta de forma dissociada ao seu comportamento dinÃmico. A identificaÃÃo da funÃÃo de transferÃncia citada à feita a partir de dados de entrada e saÃda do sistema, medidos em simulaÃÃo. Para determinaÃÃo dos parÃmetros da funÃÃo de transferÃncia que relaciona a tensÃo de saÃda e a razÃo cÃclica, à utilizado um algoritmo de mÃnimos quadrados nÃo recursivo com restriÃÃes. Quanto à identificaÃÃo da funÃÃo de transferÃncia que relaciona a corrente no indutor e a razÃo cÃclica, à empregado um modelo caixa preta linear de primeira ordem, sendo os parÃmetros de tal modelo determinados a partir da resposta em frequÃncia do sistema. Visando mostrar a utilidade dos modelos paramÃtricos, à realizado um projeto de controle com base nas expressÃes identificadas. O sistema de controle adotado à a versÃo digital de um compensador tipo 3 para a malha de tensÃo e de um compensador tipo 2 para a malha de corrente, que operam de forma alternada segundo a lÃgica ou. Os resultados de identificaÃÃo do sistema apresentam uma excelente concordÃncia entre os modelos paramÃtricos obtidos e o comportamento do conversor, mostrando a confiabilidade das tÃcnicas de identificaÃÃo empregadas nesse trabalho. Adicionalmente, o sistema de controle projetado a partir das funÃÃes de transferÃncia estimadas apresentou bom desempenho, garantindo estabilidade e rÃpida rejeiÃÃo a distÃrbios, reforÃando a validade dos mÃtodos de identificaÃÃo paramÃtrica aplicados ao conversor Buck-Boost.

NONLINEAR IDENTIFICATION AND CONTROL: A PRACTICAL SOLUTION AND ITS APPLICATION

It is well known that typical welding processes such as laser welding are nonlinear although mostly they are treated as linear system. For the purpose of automatic control, Identification of nonlinear system, especially welding processes is a necessary and fundamental problem. The purpose of this research is to develop a simple and practical identification and control for welding processes. Many investigations have shown the possibility to represent physical processes by nonlinear models, such as Hammerstein structure, consisting of a nonlinearity and linear dynamics in series with each other. Motivated by the fact that typical welding processes do not have non-zeroes, a novel two-step nonlinear Hammerstein identification method is proposed for laser welding processes. The method can be realized both in continuous and discrete case. To study the relation among parameters influencing laser processing, a standard diode laser processing system is built as system prototype. Based on experimental study, a SISO and 2ISO nonlinear Hammerstein model structure are developed to approximate the diode laser welding process. Specific persistent excitation signals such as PRTS (Pseudo-random-ternary-series) to Step signal are used for identification. The model takes welding speed as input and the top surface molten weld pool width as output. A vision based sensor implemented with a Pulse-controlled-CCD camera is proposed and applied to acquire the images and the geometric data of the weld pool. The estimated model is then verified by comparing the simulation and experimental measurement. The verification shows that the model is reasonably correct and can be use to model the nonlinear process for further study. The two-step nonlinear identification method is proved valid and applicable to traditional welding processes and similar manufacturing processes. Based on the identified model, nonlinear control algorithms are also studied. Algorithms include simple linearization and backstepping based robust adaptive control algorithm are proposed and simulated.

Linearisation of micro loudspeakers using adaptive control / Linjärisering av mikrohögtalare genom adaptiv reglering

Loudspeakers were invented over 150 years ago, but the loudspeakers used todayare still based on the same ideas. Traditionally, good sound quality has been obtainedby using expensive materials in the loudspeakers and by allowing themto be big. However, nowadays loudspeakers are wanted in applications such asmobile phones and tablets where size and weight are very limited and there is aconstant desire to decrease production costs. Special small loudspeakers, knownas micro loudspeakers, have been developed for this purpose but due to the severerestrictions in size and manufacturing costs, the sound quality in the microloudspeakers is relatively poor. One problem is that the nonlinearities of thesystem, present in any loudspeaker, become more evident in the case of microloudspeakers and cause noticeable distortion of the sound.This master’s thesis has been performed in cooperation with Opalum (formerlyActiwave), a company specializing in using digital signal processing to improvethe sound in loudspeakers with poor acoustic properties. The objective of thethesis is to investigate ways to increase the sound quality in micro loudspeakersby using nonlinear control. Focus has been on frequencies below the resonancefrequency since the distortion is more noticeable at low frequencies. First, a nonlinearmodel of the micro loudspeaker has been obtained using system identificationstrategies. The model describes the relationship between the voltage overthe voice-coil and the diaphragm displacement. Subsequently, input-output linearisationhas been used to design a controller for the system and the effect onthe distortion has been investigated through experiments. Two different modelstructures have been tested, a physical model based on the Thiele-Small modeland a black-box model with a Hammerstein-Wiener structure. In both cases, thenonlinearities were modelled as polynomials. The controller was then extendedwith an updating algorithm, making it adaptive.The efficiency of the controllers has been proved by experiments, where distortionwas decreased by up to 60 % compared to the case without control. The effectwas largest for low frequencies, around one third of the resonance frequency,but improvements were noted up to about two thirds of the resonance frequency,depending on the loudspeaker unit. The approach using a physical model andthat using a black-box model have shown similar results. / Högtalaren uppfanns för över 150 år sedan men de högtalare som används idagbygger till stora delar på samma teknik. Högkvalitativt ljud har traditionellt uppnåttsgenom att ge högtalaren goda akustiska egenskaper genom att tillåta den attvara stor och tillverkad av dyra material. Utmaningen idag ligger i att högtalarefinns inbyggda i exempelvis mobiltelefoner, vilket innebär att de behöver görassmå, lätta och billiga att producera. För att möta dessa krav har kompromisserkrävts vilket gör att dessa små högtalare, kallade mikrohögtalare, har sämre ljudkvalitet.Ett problem är att de olinjäriteter som finns i alla högtalare blir extraframträdande i små högtalare vilket leder till distorsion och övertoner i ljudsignalen.Detta examensarbete är gjort i samarbete med Opalum (tidigare Actiwave), vilketär ett företag som specialiserar sig på att med hjälp av digital signalbehandlingförbättra ljudkvaliteten för högtalare med akustiskt dåliga egenskaper. Syftetmed examensarbetet har varit att minska distorsionen i en mikrohögtalaremed hjälp av olinjär reglering. Fokus har legat på den lägre delen av frekvensbandet,under resonansfrekvensen, eftersom det är där distorsionen är mest märkbar.Först har en olinjär modell av högtalaren tagits fram genom systemidentifiering.Modellen förklarar sambandet mellan spänningen över högtalarens talspole ochmembranets utslag. I ett nästa steg har en regulator designats utifrån modellenoch regulatorns effekt på distorsionen har utvärderats genom experiment. Två olikamodellstrukturer har undersökts, dels en fysikalisk modell baserad på Thiele-Smallmodellen och dels en svartlådemodell med Hammerstein-Wienerstruktur.I båda fallen har olinjäriteterna modellerats som polynom. Regulatorn har sedanutökats med en uppdateringsalgoritm som gör den adaptiv.Experiment har visat att regleringen bidrog till att minska distorsionen med upptill 60 % jämfört med då systemet kördes utan reglering. Predistortion for Nonlinear Power Amplifiers with Memory

The fusion of voice and data applications, along with the demand for high data-rate applications such as video-on-demand, is making radio frequency (RF) spectrum an increasingly expensive commodity for current and future communications. Although bandwidth-efficient digital modulation alleviates part of the problem by requiring a minimal use of spectral resources, they put an extra design burden on RF engineers. RF transmitters and power amplifiers account for more than half the total maintenance cost of a base-station, while occupying nearly the same portion of space. Therefore, power amplifiers become a bottleneck for digital systems in terms of space and power consumption. However, power-efficient use of the amplifiers, although desirable, is extremely detrimental to end-to-end performance due to the very high peak-to-average power ratios of modulations that are used today. In order to reduce distortion while maintaining high power conversion efficiency in a power amplifier, linearization schemes are needed. In addition, significant frequency-dependent Memory Effects result in high power amplifiers operating on wideband signals. Therefore, these effects need to be considered during any attempt to minimize amplifier distortion. In this thesis, we present two schemes to cancel nonlinear distortion of a power amplifier, along with its memory effects and results for one of the schemes. The results highlight the fact that in the presence of significant memory effects, cancellation of these effects is necessary to achieve reasonable improvement in performance through linearization. We focus on predistortive schemes due to their digital- friendly structure and simple implementation. The operating environment consists of a multi-carrier W-CDMA signal. All of the studies are performed using numerical simulation on MATLAB and Agilent's Advanced Design System (ADS). / Master of Science
