Using Laboratory Impact Devices to Quantify Football Helmet Performance

When football originated in the 1800s, players wore no protective equipment. Between 1869 and 1905, there were 18 deaths and 159 serious injuries attributed to the sport. Following this, players began to wear protective equipment. The first use of a football helmet was in 1893, made of leather and designed to reduce the risk of skull fracture. Initially, football helmets were intended to protect a player against the most severe hits they would experience on the field. More recently, it has been shown that mild traumatic brain injuries, such as concussions, can induce long-term neurodegenerative processes. Since their introduction, helmets have transformed into plastic shells with padding designed to mitigate accelerations on the brain. With the growing concern for player safety, regulating bodies, like the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment, have implemented standards for protective equipment, including football helmets. On top of these standards, there have been multiple methods developed to assess helmet performance with different testing apparatuses. Manufacturers are interested in how their helmet performs according to multiple testing methods. This could be costly if they do not have the proper testing equipment that a protocol utilizes. This thesis assesses the interchangeability of different test equipment to reproduce a testing protocol. The desire to perform well in testing standards has driven the improvement of helmet performance and continued design innovation. Redesign of the Helmet Design Capstone Project

This report is the culmination of a master’s program resulting in a Master of Arts in Science Technology Engineering Mathematics (STEM) Education. The author is a veteran high school physics teacher who has participated in the ongoing development of the Engineering Design and Problem Solving Course created by UTeachEngineering and The University of Texas at Austin. As a pilot instructor teaching this course, the author has experienced the teething problems common to radically new curriculum. The trials and tribulations of a twelve-week capstone design project, that was the last engineering challenge of the inaugural year of the course, are discussed. Reasons for the module’s failure and modifications for improvement are suggested and supported by a survey of current literature. The author uses the engineering design process to reengineer the Helmet DesignCapstone Project. This report identifies the needs of the teachers and students who are, in fact, the customers of the redesign, and provides a step-by-step plan for improving the project to make it easier for the teachers and more engaging for the students. All of the instructions and material lists needed to build the testing devices and conduct the student activities are presented in detail. In this second iteration of the project, the design challenge for the students will be to evaluate the impact performance of a skateboard-type helmet and use simple tests to characterize the impact performance of various foam types. Using the insights gained by the characterization of the foam, students will design and install foam composite padding into the helmet. The engineering principle that is being stressed is the use of data acquisition for making informed design decisions, rather than trial and error testing. The report concludes with some reflections by the author about the lessons learned while developing this project and the impact they will have on his classroom practices. / text

Design of a helmet with an advanced layered composite for energy dissipation using a multi-material compliant mechanism synthesis

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) are one of the most apprehensive issues today. In recent years a lot of research has been done for reducing the risk of TBI, but no concrete solution exists yet. Helmets are one of the protective devices that are used to prevent human beings from mild TBI. For many years some kind of foam has been used in helmets for energy absorption. But, in recent years non-traditional solutions other than foam are being explored by different groups. Focus of this thesis is to develop a completely new concept of energy absorption for helmet liner by diverting the impact forces in radial directions normal to the direction of impact. This work presents a new design of an advanced layered composite (ALC) for energy dissipation through action of a 3D array of compliant mechanisms. The ALC works by diverting incoming forces in multiple radial directions and also has design provisions for reducing rotational forces. Design of compliant mechanism is optimized using multi-material topology optimization algorithm considering rigid and flexible material phases together with void. The design proposed here needs to be manufactured using the advanced polyjet printing additive manufacturing process. A general and parametric design procedure is explained which can be used to produce variants of the designs for different impact conditions and different applications. Performance of the designed ALC is examined through a benchmark example in which a comparison is made between the ALC and the traditional liner foam. An impact test is carried out in this benchmark example using dynamic Finite Element Analysis in LS DYNA. The comparison parameters under consideration are gradualness of energy absorption and peak linear force transmitted from the ALC to the body in contact with it. The design in this article is done particularly for the use in sports helmets. However, the ALC may find applications in other energy absorbing structures such as vehicle crashworthy components and protective gears. The ultimate goal of this research is to provide a novel design of energy absorbing structure which reduces the risk of head injury when the helmet is worn.
