This creative project explains the process of creating and administering a university historic resource district. Objectives of this district are protection, planning, and promotion of important campus elements, both manmade and natural. The aim of the university historic resource district is the preservation of historic structures, stimulation of pride, and the possibility of the resolution of preservation - based conflicts.The campus is first inventoried to identify the resources available. Once completed, the inventoried information is evaluated. Findings are then mapped and areas of prime concentration identified.Guidelines are then established, providing a basis to improve and protect the campus character. Preservation of the dominant characteristics and unifying elements of the campus is the main focus of the guidelines.The district would be administered by an advisory committee with broad representation. The committee would review projects that the university proposes and make recommendations based on guidelines or relevant criteria.The university district is predicated on the theory that by allowing outside involvement and arriving at decisions through consensus, university users will not feel powerless toward campus decisions. The resulting cooperative effort would be beneficial to the university users, the community at large, and the university administrators. / Department of Architecture

History and architecture of the Meridian-Kessler neighborhood

This paper will discuss the development and architecture of an Indianapolis northside residential neighborhood. While the area was settled in the mid twentieth century. Consequently, the neighborhood has a broad spectrum of architectural styles ranging from pioneer vernacular Greek Revival to Tudor Revival.In spite of the fact that the area was the leading suburb of Indianapolis in the early twentieth century, little research has been done on the history and historic architecture of Meridian-Kessler. Examples of significant structures and architectural types will be presented in the context of the area. Elements or factors which unify the neighborhood will be discussed.Finally, the issues of historic preservation in the Meridian-Kessler neighborhood will be examined. If the area is in fact historic, as the author believes then preservation measures are in order. The location and nature of the neighborhood pose a unique problem. Since the area is essentially a transitional urban/suburban district, methods of urban historic district preservation must be Modified for this special case. As historians and preservationists become reviewed. Historic increasingly aware of our early twentieth century heritage, a new terminology and approach must be acknowledged. This variation of a preservation or conservation district is termed by the author as "Suburban Preservation".Standard methods will be used to research and compose this thesis. For documentation of historic architecture, a series of Indianapolis Star articles titled "How Others Have Built" is an important source which must be a Thirty-eighth street Landmarks Foundation of Indiana is currently surveying the area; survey forms will provide much data on house types, styles and dates. Architectural archives, old records of firms active in the district and other published sources will provide further information. Planning data in the form of subarea plans andcooridor study have already been obtained for review. Plans for preservation districts in Indianapolis and other midwest cities will also be reviewed for possible application to Meridian-Kessler.Combined with field observations, the research should produce a document which places the Meridian-Kessler neighborhood in its proper historic context and aids in future planning for the area. / Department of Architecture

American wallpaper, 1870-1900

Wallpaper is a significant decorative finish of late nineteenth century interiors. Determining the appropriate approach for treatment in situ, execution of a custom reproduction, or the selection of an appropriate reproduction for a "period look" requires extensive research by an interior designer. The integrity of the historic interior can be lost or compromised during the restoration or rehabilitation process if it is based on misguided decisions. The conservation principles established in the Venice Charter and the criteria or guidelines established in the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation must be considered before a plan is implemented.The emphasis of this thesis will be establishing a methodology which addresses the design issues confronting interior designers with regard to historic wallpaper in the context of restoration and rehabilitation or adaptive use projects. The period of 1870-1900 reflects a major change inexhibitions have examined aspects of this complex period and it style and the peak period for production and use of American wallpaper. This is the most misunderstood period with regard to wallpaper because the rejection of wallpaper by the modern movement lingers today. In the past decade, four major museum is now being viewed as a critical cultural and artistic watershed.Through research, an appreciation of the various patterns and colorways will be developed. The technological innovations which affected the quality and quantity of wallpaper will also be examined. Documentation of wallpaper for this period will also include reference collections, interior photographs taken during the period, and examination of original sources written during or preceding the period. A survey of what documented reproductions are available on the market today and which are appropriate for interiors of American buildings constructed in the decades 18701900 will be reviewed. Books have been written on the subject of wallpaper, but a single reference does not exist with the information and guidelines needed by designers working on restoration and rehabilitation projects.The selected case studies examine the restoration and rehabilitation approaches to wallpaper. Conclusions were drawn from the diverse projects to reveal the broad range of appropriate treatments or solutions in the context of projects and issues. / Department of Architecture

A planning study for the William G. Scott House in Richmond, Indiana

The William G. Scott House in Richmond, Indiana was built c. 1885 for William G. Scott and his wife, Clara A. Robie McCoy. Mr. Scott, who was a successful executive at the prosperous steam engine manufacturing company Gaar, Scott & Co., was hailed as having one of the most prominent and beautiful homes within the city. The Scott family occupied the house until Mr. Scott's death in 1897, and the property was passed down to several Scott family descendants. In 1921, Richmond's local chapter of the Knights of Columbus purchased the Scott House and converted the building into their clubhouse. The Knights of Columbus continue to own and occupy the property today.The Knights of Columbus made several significant changes to house over the past eighty-two years, including installing a ceramic tile floor on the first floor, creating a Lodge Room on the third floor, remodeling the basement and the kitchen, and building a modern 5,000 sq. ft. meeting hall on the west side of the house. After the new meeting hall was constructed, the Knights of Columbus utilized the new addition most often, rather than the old clubhouse, and the historic Scott House was left vacant and allowed to slip into disrepair.Today, the Knights of Columbus use the Scott House to host "Tea Room Luncheons" featuring traditional Victorian menu items and local entertainment to revitalize public interest in historic architecture and generate funds for the future rehabilitation of the Scott House. The organization is also exploring future uses for the property and identifying additional fundraising opportunities, in hopes of rehabilitating the Scott House and restoring the property to its original elegance and grandeur.The Planning Study for the Scott House contains a history of the property, illustrations, elevation and floor plan drawings, building condition assessments, recommended treatment methods, and suggested maintenance practices. For further reference, the author's building assessment forms and annotated assessment drawings, and the Secretary of the Interior Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties are included as appendices.This project was primarily an academic exercise and intended to help the author learn the process of evaluating the condition of a building, proposing treatment methods and maintenance practices, and writing a preservation planning study. In addition, the report is intended to serve as an outline and reference guide for Knights of Columbus to help direct the organization with the future rehabilitation, preservation, and maintenance of the William G. This thesis will present information on the economic feasibility of rehabilitating an older building into office and living space. Data will show that the outlined rehabilitation project can be carried out at a lower dollar cost than new construction for a comparable amount of useable floor space.The rehabilitation project outlined in this thesis had to meet the following criteria. The current owners proposed future use of the building. All proposed modifications to the structure had to meet the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for Rehabilitation to take fullest advantage of the Tax Reform Act of 1976, and local building and zoning regulations. Rehabilitation of the building must provide the owner with enough income to completely off-set the total cost of the project within a ten year period. All of the proposed work on the building would have to meet the current owner's desire to retain as much of the building's original "character" while creating contemporary work/living space. / Department of Architecture

A preservation plan for the Rushville commercial historic district

This thesis examines the present historical resources of the Rushville Commercial Historic District. After tracing the history of the central part of Rushville from its founding in 1822 to the present, the study describes the present condition of the district and identifies four issues hindering optimal use of the district. These issues include building use, condition, infrastructure and economic vitality. Suggestions for revitalizing individual buildings and the district as a whole are given, along with potential sources of funding. Typical problems observed in the district, such as damage from water, are more specifically covered. This thesis demonstrates how individual property owners, private organizations or public entities such as the municipal government can use historic preservation to combat urban decay and economic stagnation and spur a rebirth of the Rushville Commercial Historic District by capitalizing on its important built resources. / Department of Architecture

The impact of contemporary exhibitions in historical buildings: Retaining significance and authenticity during adaptation

Thesis (MTech (Design))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2016. / Historical interiors hold within them significance which provides us with cultural identity, as well as historical and aesthetic value, and their physical materials offer us a connection to the past. These interiors and their functions often become obsolete and need to acquire a new function that is more suited to our modern-day society. One such change in function which was identified to be steadily on the rise in Cape Town is the reappropriation of historical interiors into contemporary exhibition venues. It was noted that during this process many of these historical interiors end up as neutral contemporary white boxes, where the whole historical interior is replaced or concealed by a pristine white interior and this leads to a loss of its internal historical aesthetic value. To counter this and to retain the significant aesthetics of these interiors for ourselves and our future generations, heritage legislation offers a certain amount of protection through their respective guidelines and principles during adaptation. However, these guidelines do not offer concrete methods on the responsive adaptation of historical interiors into contemporary exhibition spaces. To address this problem and provide a substitute for the white box, alternative methods for the responsive adaptation of the historical interior into a contemporary exhibition space are highlighted and investigated. Through this investigation, this study aims to provide responsive approaches which interior designers may adopt during adaptation that respect, acknowledge and highlight the significance of the reappropriated space in the design of contemporary exhibition venues.

Thesis (MTech (Architectural Technology))--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2017. / In the developed Western world, the need to preserve buildings, including industrial buildings, is well established, and the many charters that exist for guidance for preservation of the built environment point to the necessity of preservation. It can be posited that many of South Africa buildings with industrial architectural heritage are being lost either through neglect, obsolescence, demolition or vandalisation. At an international conference, David Worth, the sole South African representative for the International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage (TICCIH), stated that South Africa‟s industrial heritage has been neglected by the public, by professionals and academics, and by commercial and political interests. Läuferts and Mavunganidze make the point that South Africa continues to lag behind other countries in the preservation of and declaration of its industrial heritage. The purpose of this research was to investigate if adaptive reuse is a successful strategy to preserve industrial architectural heritage in South Africa. A further aim was to investigate whether adaptive reuse can be considered sustainable or „green‟ (in terms of the UN‟s sustainable development goals)
