Viscosity Bound Violation in the MTZ Black Hole:

Martin, Luke January 2021 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Kevin Bedell / Using the AdS/CFT correspondence, it has been shown that the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy density is bounded from below in strongly coupled field theories with a gravity dual. More recently, this bound has been shown to be grossly violated in novel non-Fermi liquids and the unitary Fermi gas in the presence of superfluid fluctuations above T_c. Nevertheless, a holographic approach to such systems which break the lower bound have been strongly reliant on AdS spacetimes with massive gravitons. In this work, we propose a violation of the viscosity over entropy bound in 3+1 dimensional AdS spacetimes that support stable black hole solutions with non-zero scalar field. Such a black hole is shown to be characterized by a novel phase transition at large negative mass, where the underlying thermodynamics agrees with the Larkin-Ovchinnikov-Fulde-Ferrell (LOFF)-like phase seen in the unitary Fermi gas near Tc and the bound is similarly broken. Such a work paves the way for a holographic description of strongly-entangled quantum fluids at high Reynolds number. / Thesis (BS) — Boston College, 2021. / Submitted to: Boston College. Exceptionally well-preserved quaternary fossils from Sawmill Sink blue hole, Abaco, The Bahamas

Albury, Nancy Ann 01 May 2010 (has links)
A diverse assemblage of exquisitely-preserved fossil animals and plants were collected from Sawmill Sink blue hole in Abaco, Bahamas. More than 40 species have been identified including extinct tortoise, an extant crocodile, and birds that no longer live in The Bahamas. This study addresses the mechanisms that preserve fossils in blue holes and discusses paleoecological implications from faunal diversity and sediment composition. Blue holes are waterilled caves with surface openings that may trap animals and surface-driven vegetation. In Sawmill Sink the talus cone within the halocline acts as a substrate on which organics collect that drive microbe ecology. Their byproducts, hydrogen sulfide and anoxia, inhibit biological destruction and delay necrolysis. Low tidal flow and quiescent water conditions further enhance stability of the depositional environment. In addition, subaerial conditions during glacial lowstands allowed owls to roost; their deposits formed a rich assemblage of small fossil vertebrates.

Investigation of the material properties of poly pipe irrigation tubing for identifying performance characteristics by thickness

Carey, Victor Frank, IV 09 December 2022 (has links) (PDF)
Poly Pipe Tubing is widely used in the Mississippi Delta for supplemental irrigation of crops during the growing season. Computerized Hole Selection (CHS) is a tool used to create a prescriptive hole punching map to manage flow and minimize tail-water runoff. Some producers have documented that CHS does not work on their farm. The common thought of failure in poly pipe tubing is the rupturing or splitting of the tubing. This research was based on the thought that failure occurs before the tubing is ruptured and is caused by over pressurization during an irrigation event. Static testing revealed that there are tensile material property differences between different thicknesses of tubing. Dynamic testing revealed on small single hole sections of tubing that hole flow increases once yield tensile strength has been surpassed for all thicknesses of tubing. Therefore, this shows that over pressurization could be the cause for CHS not working on some producers’ field.
