AN INSIGHT INTO THE PSYCHOLOGICAL EFFECTS AND EXPERIENCES OF INDIVIDUALS WHO WERE PLACED IN A GROUP HOME

Olvera, Nicole 01 June 2018 (has links)
A majority of individuals who were placed in group homes were removed from foster care or released from a juvenile detention center due to some behavioral and mental health issues. Individuals who reside in group homes typically have some type of mental health challenges that may impair their capacity to live independently. The focal point of this study was to acquire insight into the psychological implications and experiences of individuals who were placed in a group home. This study used a qualitative design with in-depth face-to-face interviews. Data was collected from 10 individuals who were placed in group homes as adolescents. Qualitative data analysis was conducted using an open coding process and major categories were identified. This study found that a great majority of the participants reported negative group home experiences. The study also found that most participants who were placed in group homes had been struggling with trust, abandonment, attachment, and mental health issues. However, the study revealed that a majority of the participants currently led positive and productive lives. It is recommended that social workers working with the group home population identify the previous trauma experienced by these individuals and so they can better understand the behaviors and challenges of an individual residing in a group home. This study also recommends that mental health clinicians, child welfare agencies, and group homes can take the initiative to better understand the previous trauma, behaviors, and experiences of group home clients.

The effects of an in-service training program concerning hearing aids for staff members at a home for the elderly / In-service training program concerning hearing aids for staff members at a home for the elderly.

Roysdon, Valisa Jean January 1979 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to conduct an in-service training program for the staff members of a nursing care facility for the elderly and evaluate the benefits of the program in terms of knowledge gained in the areas of presbycusis and hearing aids following the presentation dealing with these topics. Twenty-five staff members consisting of nurses' aides and licensed personnel (RN and LPN) at Westminster Village Health Center in Muncie, Indiana, a nursing and retirement facility for the aged, were given a presentation dealing with hearing problems and hearing aids for the elderly. Questionnaires of subjective ratings of competency with hearing aids and a test of knowledge of hearing problems and hearing aids were administered to the staff members before and after the presentation in order to evaluate any change in these factors following the presentation.Post versus pre-test results for both the questionnaire and the test showed significant improvement at the .0005 level. Suggestions for future in-service programs were also included.

The development of a national heritage policy for libraries and book collections of country houses

Reid, Peter H. January 1999 (has links)
This work examines the country house libraries of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Hitherto this is an area largely overlooked both in terms of librarianship and social history. The first part of the thesis examines the historical development of book collections within country houses. In addition to pure historical bibliography it also examines the two essentials behind their development, the people and the houses. The work goes on to focus on the current situation within the United Kingdom. By means of a near comprehensive survey of extant collections, the current picture is identified in terms of the types of material, the collectors, the condition of material, the methods of preservation and, significantly, the willingness of owners to concede access. All of these issues are fundamental components in the study and have been investigated further in order to enable the attainment of the final objective, the creation of a national heritage policy for these collections. This final element focuses particularly on methods of preservation, the potential for funding and the question of access to collections. The policy relies on evidence acquired at the earlier stages of the research as well as that acquired during a second survey dealing predominantly with preservation, access and funding. This is coupled with the identification of current best practice within the library preservation field. Extensive use has been made of contact with owners and administrators of collections by means of the surveys, interviews, observational visits and correspondence. In addition, heritage organisations and structures within the United Kingdom have been analysed, with emphasis on those with direct impact on the country house. This research is fundamentally about two things: the historical development of collections and the approaches likely to ensure their survival.
