INVASIVENESS OF AN EXOTIC GALL WASP IS INFLUENCED BY INTERACTIONS WITH EXOTIC AND ENDEMIC ORGANISMS

American chestnut was once a crucial component of North American forests, but it was functionally eliminated by the introduction of the chestnut blight fungus. Chestnut is recently experiencing resurgence, but the introduced Asian chestnut gall wasp, a specialist herbivore, threatens chestnut recovery. I characterized this invasion and the interactions developing with host associates as the gall wasp spread in North America. Gall wasp dispersal is attributable to host plant distribution, effects of prevailing winds during adult insect emergence, and to topography. This knowledge may be useful to more accurately predict locations of future gall wasp infestations. Gall wasp invasiveness is also affected by its ability to modulate reproduction and reallocate nutritive resources for body maintenance and egg quality. The gall wasp can form galls of different shape and structure based on population levels and parasitism pressure, in order to optimize fitness. Simple, uni-lobed galls are formed when population pressure is low, and complex, multi-lobed galls are formed when gall wasp populations are high. A fungal plant pathogen, identified as Colletotrichum sp., infects galls and acts as an opportunistic entomopathogen, causing gall wasp mortality while sparing the parasitoid. A non-native torymid parasitic wasp has been deployed for biological control. Using a Y-olfactometer I demonstrated that a combination of olfactory and visual cues from chestnut galls and chestnut foliage is required for parasitoid adults to locate hosts. In addition, I evaluated interactions between the gall wasp and stem cankers on chestnut. Using potted Chinese chestnut seedlings with or without gall wasp or a native Nectria cankering pathogen, I found that the gall wasp has a negative impact on plant fitness, and a positive impact on fungal fitness. My work helps elucidate ecological mechanisms underlying the success of the exotic Asian chestnut gall wasp in North America, and adds to our knowledge base characterizing evolving ecological interactions between native and introduced species.

Behavioral Ecology and Genetics of Potential Natural Enemies of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid

Eastern and Carolina hemlock in the eastern United States are experiencing high mortality due to the invasive non-native hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA). The most promising means of control of HWA is the importation of natural enemies from the native range of HWA for classical biological control. Prior to release, natural enemies must be tested for suitability as a control agent, including the ability to locate the target prey. Coleopteran predators, including Scymnus coniferarum and Laricobius osakensis are under consideration as a means of biological control of HWA. Laricobius nigrinus was released in hemlock forests in 2003. It was recently discovered to hybridize with the native Laricobius rubidus. Behavioral responses of these predators to HWA and host tree foliage were observed using a 4-chambered olfactometer, and genetic analysis was used to differentiate responses of L. nigrinus, L. rubidus, and hybrids. In the olfactometer, insects are allowed to amble about the arena and respond to volatile cues from each treatment. Host foliage with and without HWA was tested, as were various comparisons of eastern versus western foliage, host versus non-host foliage, and foliage containing HWA and a congeneric feeding beetle. Olfactometer bioassays demonstrated that foliage from hosts where prey is commonly found is preferable to foliage where prey is seldom found, and that the presence of HWA-induced volatile cues is the strongest driver of behavior, and trumps the presence of a competitor. There is evidence in the study that supports the reliability-detectability phenomenon common in parasitoid biological control agents. Hybrid individuals were found to behave similarly to released L. nigrinus, although in some cases intermediate behavioral traits were evident, with respect to the parental species. This study and others support the continued need for strict testing of potential biological control agents prior to release, as well as a strong impetus for the inclusion and implementation of genetic analysis as a standard component of agent evaluation.

Effects of Host-plant Density on Herbivores and Their Parasitoids: A Field Experiment with a Native Perennial Legume

Senna mexicana chapmanii (Fabaceae: Caesalpinoideae), an attractive and threatened species native to pine rocklands of southern Florida, is consumed by folivorous caterpillars of Sulfur butterflies (Lepidoptera: Pieridae). Caterpillars may be deterred or eaten by predators, but also very important are parasitoids, both flies and wasps. This study investigated the effects of plant density on Sulfur caterpillar numbers and rates of parasitization. Senna mexicana chapmanii plantations were established at agricultural and urban areas; both sites are adjacent to protected pine rockland areas. Sulfur butterfly immature stages were collected and reared to glean information regarding number of herbivores and rates of parasitization. Continuing this weekly monitoring protocol over the course of a year provided data to determine that higher plant density has an effect on levels of parisitization and is correlated with the number of herbivores. Elucidating these patterns has important implications understanding the factors that regulate interactions in this plant/herbivore/parasitoid system.
