The corridor remains a standard of apartment design. As a catalyst to the development of new alternatives, this thesis examines the corridor in detail, and determines some basic principles for the design of more socially coherent access space in apartment housing. The first section of the thesis isolates twelve major problems of corridor living. It then discusses their effect on the social and spatial qualities of the apartment environment. And in response to these problems, it derives principles for the redesign of this environment through an examination of other forms of housing in which access from the street to the front door is more direct and more coherent. In the second section, these principles are applied to the analysis and redesign of one of the few existing alternatives to the internal corridor in apartment housing: the outside access gallery. In this analysis, a group of the more important gallery access projects is examined to determine how well they each fulfill the twelve principles isolated in the first section. Where these principles remain unfulfilled, alternatives are proposed and illustrated. Urban development in Hong Kong is often regarded as demolition of aged buildings and re-building a massive volume building on the same lot. Heritage in the past decade has been a hot topic in the public and the media. A lot of heritage with values were not being graded or protected by the Hong Kong Government. In spite of this, some of the heritage were conserved accidently. The dissertation will investigate examples when conservation and development come together, in a form of case studies on current examples of adaptive reuse of Post-war Tong Lau in Hong Kong. When heritage and urban development come together, which seems to be contradicting, in fact, could be converged into a new approach of financially viable form of urban development. The key issue addressed by this dissertation is by observation and review of the current examples of adaptive reuse of Post-war Tong Lau, to analysis the design criteria and guideline for the Adaptive Reuse of Post-war Tong Lau as an alternative choice for the developers for future property development, and at the same time could contribute to the conservation in Hong Kong. / published_or_final_version / Conservation / Master / Master of Science in Conservation

With the development of free-economy relations and with the changes in the social life of Russia that continue to this day, a construction boom in the low-storied housing market, which began in 1991, continues. However, despite the rapid development of the low-storied market itself, the construction industry was unable to adapt to the new economic relations and the high consumer demands being placed on it. This led to an increase in prices for low-storied housing and made it unaffordable for most strata of the population. / This paper will consider the peculiarities of applying new construction technologies in the market for low-storied housing in Russia, with the aim of reducing the cost of construction. The paper concentrates on studying previous experience in industrial construction in Russia, as well as on studying the peculiarities of today's low-storied housing market. / As a result of this research, the author identifies a number of specific peculiarities which new construction technology should possess in order to be able to adapt itself more rapidly and neatly on the Russian low-storied housing market.
