Utilizing critical and welfare state theory, this thesis is primarily centred on policy analysis regarding the design and implementation of the legislated right to housing in Canada alongside the National Housing Strategy. In examining Canada’s National Housing Strategy, right to housing legislation, and analysis and commentary around the 2019 Canadian federal budget, the thesis explores the potential for the right to housing to contribute to progressive policy shifts in Canada’s housing system at a time where the impacts of commodification and financialization continue to be prevalent. Additional literature related to Canada’s housing system and social welfare responses, and commentary on the right to housing in domestic and international contexts contributes to an assessment of the social and economic conditions that have led to the emergence of alternative housing policy, as well as the underlying principles and ideologies which guide and influence state intervention. Through this assessment, it is evident that while the legal space in which to claim the right to housing may be an important foundation to further highlight and challenge inequities in Canada’s housing system, the extent to which this results in tangible systemic change remains in question. Further topics are explored in the conclusion around the potential next steps and necessary considerations for implementation in the Canadian context. The research, analysis, and discussion present in this thesis is meant to contribute to a relevant and timely critical examination of the right to housing in Canada, centred within social work values, in order to better understand how to conceptualize and challenge inequities in Canada’s housing system. / Thesis / Master of Social Work (MSW)

A high proportion of urban residents in Tanzanian cities are tenants who rent rooms in privately owned houses in unplanned settlements. However, in housing policy and in urban planning rental tenure gets very little attention. This study focuses on the reasons for and consequences of this discrepancy between policy and practice. Perspectives and actions of different actors involved in the housing provision process in Mwanza City, Tanzania, have been central to the research. The examined actors are residents in various housing tenure forms as well as government officials and representatives at different levels, from the neighbourhood level to UN-Habitat. The main methods have been interviews and discussions with actors as well as studies of policy documents, laws and plans. Among government actors, private rental tenure is largely seen as an issue between landlords and tenants. Tanzanian housing policy focuses more on land for housing than on shelter. This means that house-owners who control land have a more important role in urban planning and policies than tenants have. In Tanzania in general and in Mwanza in particular, housing policy focuses on residents’ involvement in upgrading unplanned areas by organising in Community Based Organisations. This means that owners who live for a longer period in an area benefit more from settlement improvements than tenants. Tenants are relatively mobile and do not take for granted that they will stay in the same house for long. This raises the question of tenants’ possibilities to influence as well as their rights as citizens as compared to that of owners. The question of citizens’ rights for dwellers in informal settlements has received increased attention during the last years in international housing policy discussions. There is an evident need to intensify and diversify this discussion.

The aim of the diploma thesis called "Vítkovice in the Era of State-Building. The Contribution to Social History" is to describe and analyse social relations and social interactions in Vítkovice in the twenties of the 20th century. It is focused on two main topics which were really important for society in Vítkovice in that period. The thesis consists of two chapters, which are: relation between nations and housing strategy. The dynamics of the society in Vítkovice is determined by the Vítkovice Ironworks. That is reason why company is such important part of the research field. Position of Vítkovice Ironworks was very influential because of connection between the company and the city. Whereas relations between nations were strained because of policy of the company, despite of housing crisis Ironwork's housing strategy helped to unify the society.
