A survey of some small firms in the rural areas of England : their structure and functions, with special reference to factors that affect their developmentJali, Mohamad Tajuddin bin January 1973 (has links)
This study was concerned with the structure, functions and development, especially the performance, of some rural small firms associated with the Council for Small Industries in Rural Areas (C?SIRA) of England. Forty firms were used as the main basis of analysis. For some aspects of the investigation, however, data from another 54 firms, obtained indirectly through nine CoSIRA Organisers, were also used. For performance-analysis, the 40 firms were firstly ranked according to their growth and profitability rates which were calculated from their financial data. Then each of the variables hypothesised to be related to performance was tested to ascertain its relationship with performance, using the Spearman's Rank Correlation technique. The analysis indicated that each of the four factors - the principal, the firm itself, its management, and the environment - had a bearing upon the performance of the firm. Within the first factor, the owner-manager's background and attitudes were found to be most important; in the second, the firm's size, age and scope of activities were also found to be correlated with performance; with respect to the third, it was revealed that firms which practised some forms of systems in planning, control and costing performed better than those which did not and, finally with respect to the fourth factor, it was found that some of the services provided by CoSIRA, especially credit finance, were facilitative to the firm's performance. Another significant facet of the firms highlighted by the study was their multifarious roles. These, meeting economic, psychological, sociological and political needs, were considered to be most useful to man and his society. Finally, the study has added light to the structural characteristics of the sampled firms, including various aspects of their development, orientation and organisation, as well as their various structural strengths and weakness.

In France, creative industries are traditionally concentrated in the Paris region. During the 1980s, the decentralisation have given to the actors of the Lille, Lyon and Marseille metropolitan areas more power. So they have decided to launch a policy in favor of the image sector. But those creative industries are more or less developped thanks to different regional assets: local TV or newspapers, filming tradition, HEIs, microelectronics or multimedia industries… However, the image sector remains still largely emergent and little structured. In order to retain the workforce trained in the metropolitan areas and tempted to leave the region, public authorities has decided to launch media districts or crossmedia clusters policies. Nevertheless, networks dynamics is still very fragile and emergent in the image sector, that requires a support of public authorities in the long term.

Kapitaalstruktuur van die Suid-Afrikaanse fabriekswese09 February 2015 (has links)
D.Com. (Economics) / The objective in writing this thesis was to investigate the capital structure of South African manufacturing industry and the implications of this structure for policy formation relating to industry. The capital stock of the 27 branches of the manufacturing industry were calculated by means of the perpetual inventory method based on the following assumptions: capital formation excludes transactions relating to inventory, durable consumer goods and financial assets; transactions in land and other fixed assets were taken into consideration; leasing was regarded as investment and capitalised at ten times the annual base payment in respect of land and buildings and five times in respect of machinery and transport equipment; and transfer costs on property and existing buildings were treated as part of fixed investment. Cencuses compiled by the Department of Statistics were the main source of information in the calculation of investment. Depreciation was based on the straight-line-method. Price indices from various sources, including those compiled by the Reserve Bank, were used. The economic life of fixed assets for the various branches of the manufacturing industry was chosen after consultation with experts in the various industries and an analysis of information obtained by questionnaire. It was found that the real capital stock of manufacturing industry increased by 1 247 per cent during the period 1945-1975, i.e. at an average annual rate of 8,8 per cent. The basic iron and steel industry with a capital stock (valued at 1975 replacement values) or R2 478,4 million in 1975 was the largest absolute consumer of capital followed by the food industry ...

D.Com. (Business Economics) / In the modern social context private enterprise is expected not only to pursue profitability but also social objectives. The fact that business is expected to be involved in the social welfare of society has important implications for the division of responsibility between government and private enterprise within society. Due to the view that business has a social responsibility uncertainty exists as to the respective roles of government and private enterprise. The objective of this research was to obtain an indication of the scope and nature of the social responsibility of business in South Africa. For this purpose the attitude of the white community in South Africa regarding corporate social responsibility was measured. In this respect the attitude of managers of companies registered on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange was also measured...
