Abstract Title: The Balanced Scorecard - A qualitative study investigating whether a scorecard can support companies in their innovation and sustainability efforts.Authors: Alice Fransson and Aline Morstedt Supervisor: Anders Parment Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the corporate governance challenges faced by startups, medium-sized and large companies that consider themselves to be working with sustainability and innovation. In addition, we also want to find out whether the balanced scorecard could be a good tool to support this work. Problematization: Today, we see companies facing challenges as society becomes more and more aware of the environment and sustainability, while at the same time placing high demands on technological development and innovation. More companies today choose to prioritize innovation. Instead, the central focus and most resources go to strengthening the internal core business and to safe and predictable innovation. One tool that can help companies manage their operations according to these aspects is the so-called balanced scorecard, which helps companies manage their internal operations based on a combination of both financial and operational measures.  Methodology: It is a qualitative study with an abductive approach where the empirical material has been collected with ten semi-structured interviews from companies working with innovation and sustainability. Conclusion: The scorecard can be a useful tool to support innovation and sustainability in companies of different sizes and characters. It is important to adapt the use of the scorecard to the company's size, specific needs, and challenges to achieve optimal results. Failure to be selective in the integration of the different elements of the scorecard may result in the opposite effect and create rigid structures that may hamper innovation and sustainability development. Contribution: This study has increased the understanding of how the balanced scorecard can be used as a tool to support innovation and sustainability efforts in companies.Key words: The Balanced Score Card, sustainability, radical innovation, and incremental innovation.
