The governance of ecotourism as a socially innovative force for paving the way for more sustainable paths : the Morvan regional park case / La gouvernance de l'écotourisme comme force socialement innovante pour ouvrir la voie à des perspectives plus durables : le cas du parc naturel régional du Morvan

Parra, Constanza 28 January 2010 (has links)
This is a thesis about the search for a deeper understanding of the changing and complex interactions between society and nature. The overall goal was to elucidate more fully the character of the socio-institutional arrangements underpinning a transition towards the construction of more sustainable societies. This problematic was addressed theoretically, by building bridges between the concepts of sustainable development, governance and ecotourism, and empirically through a privileged case study in the Parc Naturel Régional du Morvan. The main objective was to examine the meaning and role of governance in sustainable development via the examination of ecotourism in protected areas. The conceptual approach draws on economic sociology, institutionalism and spatial development theory, and underlines the need to foster post-disciplinary research. The results of this research reveal the rhizoidal power of ecotourism as a socially embedded innovative force enabling the fabrication of more sustainable territorial paths. The Morvan case shows how the contemporary growing interest for ecotourism has produced new multi-scalar spaces of negotiation between the state, the private sector and civil society agents. The processes that have led to the emergence of what might be called a ‘new ecotourism empowering locus’, while advocating for sustainable ecotourism contest ongoing unsustainable governance dynamics. These processes have shown an infinite empowering capacity to produce collective learning, post-normal knowledge and new socio-institutional reconfigurations to foster sustainability and to contest unsustainable forms of territorial production, consumption and state regulation.

The technopolis: exploring the urban environment and technological change in the discourse of urban design.

Adous, Zeky A 06 March 2014 (has links)
The intention of this exercise is to investigate a specific area in the growing field of urban design, while learning in the process. As urban design is one of the practices that are directly affected by the pressures resulting from the current fast changes in our environments, it will be useful and fascinating to explore this dimension in the discourse. The theme of the discourse is therefore to reflect on the different thoughts and deal with the continual change in the Urban Environment that is resulting from technological advancements. Technology is generally discussed as the human mastery in perfecting the tools by which humans attempt to control their environments. Therefore the Urban Environment is presented to be the reflection of human level of technological success. The thesis hence revises the understanding of the Urban Environment It emphasizes the fact that the Urban Environment is a continually transforming entity, whereby urban designers are expected to continually come to terms with the emerging new lifestyles, due to changing technology and its impacts on the structures of urban environments. While sharing the view that respects the values of the past (that have continued to shape human urban environments), this study advocates the maintenance of some sort of balance in design approaches, to also allow the accommodation of new technological environments. The study inciudes experimenting on reasonably bold but plausible design ideas. In doing so *''« exercise hopes to provide a stage for discussions and provoke iri-iovative thinking by urban designers, that will be useful to the discourse of urban design.

Cognitive Implications of Biculturalism: Impact on Entrepreneurial Intentions

Unknown Date (has links)
Globalization has increased the number of individuals who identify with more than one culture. Studies in cultural psychology suggest that the manner in which bicultural individuals manage their dual cultural identities has important implications for them and for their host societies. While existing studies have examined the psychological and sociocultural consequences of biculturalism, only little attention has been paid to understanding its economic consequences. Importantly, the effect that managing dual cultural identities has on bicultural individual's entrepreneurial intentions has remained unexplored. Given the fact that entrepreneurship is vital to the economic success of nations and biculturals are said to play an important role as founders of several new business ventures, it has become critical to analyze the impact that biculturalism has on bicultural individual's propensity to start new business ventures. This dissertation aspires to fill this gap in research. In this dissertation, I used the identity integrationist perspective to argue that amongst biculturals, those with high identity integration will display greater entrepreneurial intentions than those with less identity integration. Further, I argued that cognitions, specifically cognitive cultural intelligence, cultural metacognition and cognitive flexibility, will mediate the effect of bicultural identity integration on entrepreneurial intentions. Empirical analysis supported the argument that biculturals with high identity integration display greater entrepreneurial intentions. Further, cognitive cultural intelligence and cultural metacognition were found to mediate the effect of identity integration on entrepreneurial intentions. I also assessed the role that attitude towards risk taking and attitude towards autonomy play in explaining biculturals' entrepreneurial intentions. I argued that biculturals with more positive attitude towards risk taking and more positive attitude towards autonomy will display greater entrepreneurial intentions. Empirical analysis supported this viewpoint. Further, based on entrepreneurial cognition stream of research, I argued that cognitions, specifically cognitive cultural intelligence, cultural metacognition and cognitive flexibility will positively influence biculturals attitude towards risk taking and attitude towards autonomy. Empirical analysis found support for the positive effect of cognitive flexibility on biculturals' attitudes towards risk taking and autonomy. Taken together, results of this dissertation offer a finer grained understanding of the factors and the mechanism that influence bicultural individual's entrepreneurial intentions. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2015. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Hamzo, Piter, Åhman, Johannes January 2011 (has links)
Firefighters have one of the most dangerous working conditions currently existing in Sweden, and with the amount of difficulty’s they often encounter during the call-outs, makes it a good organization to implement an innovation process on.   This thesis is an innovation process applied to a fire department in order to see if a solution could solve one of their problems. The goal was to develop a solution to facilitate rescue problems in extreme situations. The method was divided into three steps to achieve a result. First we searched for a problem that we later on selected, but also an environmental scanning analysis was performed to gain insight on the relevant circumstances. Later on a brainstorming session was done to solve this problem, and with the generated ideas we developed a few concepts and with these we tried as far as possible to fill the fire departments requirements. The next step was to select the concept that was considered best suited to solve the problem, which then we made into a prototype in step number three. The result of this thesis was a tool that is adapted for the firefighter’s efforts to rescue an unconscious person in a burning house. When an unconscious person has a weight that exceeds the firefighter’s capacity and therefore making the procedures take longer time, this puts firefighter´s health in more danger than necessary. The purpose of the tool is to make their job more effective and simplify the procedure.
