Temporal Displacement is an investigation of loss and the recollection of memories translated through tangible objects and their placement in relationship to one another. The objects are primarily slip-cast terracotta ceramic dog-like heads with fabric bodies crafted as puppet-like forms, which are both stationary and suspended. Additional elements include a Mechanical Dog that the viewer activates with a hand-held crank; muslin fabric printed with hand-made ceramic stamps, and a curtain. The ceramic stamps are incised with a version of the puppets playing the game of jacks. The project aims to produce an immersive video installation titled 'The Glittering City???. This project investigates contemporary cultural issues within the context of critical/specific geographical sites. These locations are the Australian coastal border, and a refugee camp near the Kenyan/Sudanese border, known as Kakuma. 'The Glittering City'is an installation that incorporates elements of video, sculpture, sound and electronics in a kinetic 2 channel immersive video and (multi-channel) audio installation. The key aims for the project are to raise awareness of the issues facing refugees and asylum seekers in relation to their sense of home. In order to accomplish this aim the research will extend upon prior research into embedded video sculptures. A subset of the key aim is to seek funding for the project. The installation is the third and final work from a trilogy of works that explores the themes journey, arrival and departure, respectively. The Glittering City is contextualised within four key areas inherent within the research practice. These key elements are 1. hybrid documentary art, 2. expanded cinema, 3. Technology and art, 4. culture and identity. Key outcomes of the research are the production and installation of The Glittering City at Campbelltown Arts Centre, May 2007. An educational program also took place at the Centre to raise awareness of the themes the installation poses. The production of a catalogue for The Glittering City is an important device for disseminating the core concepts. For the costs of making the multi-channel production, the project successfully sought grant funding from Arts NSW. This resulted in a grant through their Western Sydney I Artists' Fellowship program. The Glittering City used further funding from the Campbelltown Arts Centre to cover catalogue production, invitation design, mail out and installation costs.

Phantom in the corner: staging a gothic spectacleBanyard, Kylie Jane, Art, College of Fine Arts, UNSW January 2007 (has links)
My research proposes an analytical engagement with the central functions of Phantasmagoria and the Wunderkammer, namely atmosphere and display. My paper is divided into six chapters; Chapter one proposes spectatorship as a common thread linking the Phantasmagoria to the Wunderkammer and offers an overview of the similarities and disparities between the two. Chapters two, three and four focus on constructs, definitions and implications of Gothicity within the context of Phantasmagoria, Horror films and contemporary art. Aligning my studio-based practice with contemporary artists' who engage with aspects of the Gothic spectacle. Chapter five contemplates the Wunderkammer in terms of its history and precursive archival practices. Chapter six offers an analysis of specific contemporary artists' attraction to archaic modes of display and provides a theoretical platform for my own conceptual engagement. The objective of my research has been to collate reference material aligned to various modes of historic and theoretical enquiry, thereupon concluding my studies in the 'staging' of Phantom in the Comer an immersive multi-media installation.
