ease of use, familiarity, and affordability. The evolution of PC computing power has
resulted in a telemetry processing system easily up to most tasks, even for control of and
processing of data from a very complex system such as the Common Airborne
Instrumentation System (CAIS) used on the new Lockheed-Martin F-22. A complete
system including decommutators, bit synchronizers, IRIG time code readers, simulators,
DACs, live video, and tape units for logging can be installed in a rackmount, desktop, or
even portable enclosure.
The PC/104 standard represents another step forward in the PC industry evolution towards
the goals of lower power consumption, smaller size, and greater capacity. The advent of
this standard and the availability of processors and peripherals in this form factor has made
possible the development of a new generation of portable low cost test equipment.
This paper will outline the advantages and applications offered by a full-function, standalone,
rugged, and portable instrumentation controller. Applications of this small (5.25"H x
8.0"W x 9.5"L) unit could include: flight line instrumentation check-out, onboard aircraft
data monitoring, automotive testing, small craft testing, helicopter testing, and just about
any other application where small-size, affordability, and capability are required.

One application of airborne instrumentation systems that has to this point been developed and maintained separately from traditional avionics and orange-wire data acquisition systems is video and imagery. The development of network-based video and imagery systems has led to an opportunity to unify these two previously distinct airborne data acquisition activities using standards for plug-n-play interoperability across airframes and organizations. This paper describes standards based network-based video and imagery instrumentation systems which, are being implemented to replace existing proprietary systems.

In particular, is the study of the pressure internal to the cannon and about the base of the projectile during cannon launch through muzzle exit. Pressure on the base is thought to be uniform and therefore hydrostatic, even though there are undulations in the magnitude of the pressure from the burning propellant. This paper studies various phenomena of the launching of 155-mm artillery projectiles with slip band obturators. Specifically, pressure gradients in and around the base and pressure along the body caused by obturator “blow-by” during the interior ballistic flight and muzzle exit. This study is accomplished by use of two different types of Instrumented Ballistic Test Projectiles (IBTP). The objective of tests performed was to successfully capture pressure and acceleration live data which will be used to characterize the localized base and body pressurization on a 155-mm artillery cannon launched projectile. The telemetry system used for these tests was the ARRT-124 telemetry system provided by the Armament Research, Development, and Engineering Center, specifically the Precision Munitions Instrumentation Division. The telemetry system used for the IBTP employs a traditional FM/FM technique for monitoring and transmitting a number of analog channels. Preliminary captured data indicated localized fluctuations in pressure that are not uniform over the base and the projectile body. Further studying of the data may provide insight into other projectile dynamics such as fin deployment, set forward accelerations at muzzle exit, and obturator performance.

An Orchestration for Wind Band of Peter Klatzow’s From the Poets: Exploring a systematic approach to orchestration.Feder, Arthur John 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MMus) -- Stellenbosch University, 2010. / The wind band is a far underused composition medium in South Africa. Partially, this is due to the
stereotypical view towards the ensemble and unfamiliarity with dealing with the heterogeneous
timbral pallet. The author aimed to demonstrate the ensemble’s capabilities through a systematic
orchestration process. The result of this dissertation is an orchestration of a large-scale work, From
the Poets, for wind band.
This creative research resulted in a systematic critical investigation of instrumental idiosyncrasies,
balance, conventions of notation and timbre combinations found in the wind band. Furthermore,
the author scrutinised the benefits and shortcomings of the aforementioned systematic process.
Concluding that, through a methodical process, an orchestrator achieves a thorough understanding
of the original text and can thus translate without fear of making unfavourable musical decisions.
However, as this was a two-year process, the method might not work in the time constraints
presented in real world situations, such as the music industry for instance. The author provides
possible adaptations to the method in order to cope with the above-mentioned time constraints. / Die blaasorkes is ʼn vêr-onderbenutte medium vir komposisie in Suid-Afrika, deels as gevolg van

demonstreer deur middel van 'n stelselmatige orkestrasieproses. Die resultaat van hierdie skripsie
is 'n orkestrasie van 'n grootskaalse werk, From the Poets, vir blaasorkes.
Hierdie kreatiewe navorsing het gelei tot 'n sistematiese kritiese ondersoek met betrekking tot
instrumentale eienaardighede, balans, konvensies van notasie en toonkleur kombinasies wat ʼn
blaasorkes bied. Verder het die skrywer die voordele en tekortkominge van die bogenoemde
proses ondersoek. Die gevolgtrekking is dat, by wyse van, 'n metodiese proses, 'n orkestrator 'n
deeglike begrip van die oorspronklike teks kan bereik en dus die materiaal vertaal sonder vrees om
ongunstige musikale besluite te maak. Aangesien die navorsing 'n tweejaarlange proses behels
het, glo die skrywer dat hierdie metode moontlik ontoereikend mag wees gegewe die
tydsbeperkinge wat dikwels deur die musiekindustrie opgelê word. Derhalwe bied die skrywer ook
moontlike aanpassings tot sy metode om die bogenoemde tydsbeperkings te akkommodeer.
