The geopolitical interests of Ukraine in the modern system of international relations

Bryn, Andriy January 2011 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the analysis of contemporary trends in the geopolitics of Ukraine by highlighting major periods in the formations of its geopolitics, geopolitical interests of Ukraine in the relations with strategic partners, and assessing eventual development of Ukraine's geopolitics with a special emphasis on the cooperation within global universal international organizations such as the United Nations. The research applies an analysis of history of Ukraine's geopolitics in order to promote a better understanding of recent trends in the country's foreign policy and its geopolitical interests, analyze the relations of Ukraine with its strategic partners, including the United States, countries of Central and Eastern Europe, Russian Federation and the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States, and provide an assessment for the future of Ukraine's geopolitics. In this regard, the study argues that the Ukraine's geopolitics and its interests are determined by the large scale of factors, which derive from historical, socio-cultural, geographic, political and economic specifics of Ukraine. Based on the analysis of the main trends in the modern Ukraine's geopolitics, assessment of Ukraine's geopolitical potential and the current global geopolitical situation, the thesis concludes that...

Reading habits and interests of parents and their influence on the reading habits and interests of their children in Umlazi Township

Mngoma, Ntombifuthi Patricia. January 1997 (has links)
Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of M. Bibl. in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Zululand, 1997. / The study was prompted by the lack of a reading culture observed at schools in Umlazi area. An overview of the literature on Black family life and its possible influence on reading, pointed to various factors which could have a negative influence on Black pupils' reading, for example, poor home conditions, lack of parent models, oral culture and difficulties with regard to the language of available reading material. Home background was identified as a major factor in preparing children for leisure reading The respondents in the survey on reading interests and habits of pupils at three Umlazi schools, and their parents, represented a cross section of families, i.e. from unemployed to professional parents. Nearly half (47%) had an income of less than R 1 799,00 per month. The majority of the parents (66.7%) came from a rural background in which the oral culture is still predominant. Based on the research conducted for this study, it was concluded that parents, regardless of their cultural and socio-economic and geographical backgrounds were readers, providing their children with positive role models to copy. Parents stimulated the reading habit through pre-school story reading (52.5%) and story telling (77.5%), purchasing of reading material (61.7%), and encouragement of public library use (78.7%). The findings also indicated that factors such as TV watching, listening to the radio, lack of public libraries, inadequately trained teacher-librarians, and lack of encouragement from teachers to use the school library had a negative influence on pupils' reading habit. The results of the survey can however not be regarded as conclusive. With face-to-face contact with respondents and in-depth interviewing different results might be obtained.

CLINICAL PRACTICE GUIDELINES: FACILITATING THEIR USE AND ENHANCING THEIR TRUSTWORTHINESS

Neumann, Ignacio 11 1900 (has links)
None / Clinicians in general value the use of the best evidence in decision-making and consider that can improve patient care. However, a successful evidence based practice is hard to achieve in real life. In recent years, with the consolidation of the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach, the development of improved standards to judge the trustworthiness of guideline recommendations and the adoption of more strict policies to limit the influence of conflict of interests, trustworthy guidelines have become an attractive alternative for an evidence-based clinical practice. In this thesis we offer an explicit and easy-to-use guidance to clinicians regarding how to use guideline recommendations in the context of a real life practice. We also provide an in-depth explanation of the judgments involved in determining the direction and strength of recommendations. Finally, we expand the knowledge about how to manage conflict of interests in guideline developers. Through two studies evaluating the conflict of interest policy implemented at the American College of Chest Physicians 9th edition of the Antithrombotic Guidelines, we show what aspects of the policy were successful and what aspects need to be reformulated. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / None
