Response of interior spruce to fertilization in the interior of British Columbia

In 1987, a research project, conducted in the interior of British Columbia, was undertaken in order to obtain preliminary fertilization response data for three interior species. In 1988, as part of this contract, 12 screening trials were established in young interior spruce stands in the north-central interior of B. C. using factorial combinations of nitrogen and "complete" mix fertilizer. Initial assessment of the unfertilized foliage obtained from the 12 installations indicated that all stands exibited low nitrogen and potentially low sulphur levels. After fertilization, the effects of the treatments were measured by needle weight response, nutrient concentration, and subsequent nutrient content response. In all 12 installations the largest needle weight response occured when the nitrogen and the "complete" mix fertilizers were combined.. In the treatments where nitrogen was applied alone, no significant change in needle size was recorded. Nutritionally, nitrogen fertilization resulted in large increases in nitrogen concentration, indicating this element was limiting. As well, nitrogen fertilization also produced large decreases in K, S, and S04-S concentrations. Nitrogen-only fertilization also caused large elevations in the N/S ratios to occur. This elevation in N/S ratios and the subsequent decreases in S and S04-S concentrations seem to indicate that nitrogen-only fertilization has a negative impact on the sulphur nutrition of interior spruce. The addition of the "complete" mix fertilizer was, in most cases, successful in returning the decreased nutrient concentration levels of K, S, and S04 and the elevated N/S ratios back to their original unfertilized status. From these results it appears that nitrogen fertilization of interior spruce should only be considered if it is accompanied by a mixture of other nutrients; the most important component being sulphur. / Forestry, Faculty of / Graduate

Insect and disease risk factors in established interior spruce plantations

Forest insects and diseases active in immature interior spruce stands in the central interior of British Columbia and their possible implications in forest management practices have been surveyed. Collection records, spanning the period 1949 to 1982, from the Forest Insect and Disease Survey of the Canadian Forestry Service were reviewed for the Prince George Timber Supply Area and the pest incidence in immature interior spruce stands summarized. Twenty-two plantations, established between 1963 and 1973, were surveyed to determine the relative incidence of the major insect and pathogen pests of immature spruce in Supply Block 'G' of the Prince George Timber Supply Area. A bud midge, likely Rhabdophaga swainei Felt (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), and a terminal weevil, Pissodes strobi Peck (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), were found to consistently infest and damage a significant number of immature interior spruce trees. A spruce stand stocking profile was developed as a basis for discussion of management practices in plantations and immature stands. The stocking profile can be used in the determination of not only pest management policy decisions but in stand management decisions affecting stand density and, ultimately, merchantable yield at harvest. The findings confirmed that forest management must be actively practiced throughout the life of a forest stand. To be successful, however, stand management guidelines and merchantable yield projections are required. These guidelines and projections must include the influences of insects and diseases upon the forest crop in their development model. This information is particularly important in the development of complete Timber Supply Area plans and for the flagging of pest hazard periods during the development of spruce forests. / Forestry, Faculty of / Graduate

Effects of intensive fertilization on soil nutrient cycling in lodgepole pine and interior spruce forests in the Central Interior of British Columbia

The growth and productivity of British Columbia’s interior forests is largely limited by soil nutrient availability. Fertilization has been shown to be an effective silvicultural tool for increasing the development of immature stands throughout the region. This has lead to increased interest in long-term, repeated fertilization as a means of addressing timber-supply shortfalls as a result of the current mountain pine beetle (Dendroctonus ponderosae) outbreak. However, there is little information related to the impacts of repeated fertilization on the cycling of nutrients in many of these stands. This study makes use of a long-term (13-15 year) fertilization experiment in two lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. var. latifolia Engelm) and two interior spruce (Picea glauca [Moench] Voss and Picea engelmannii Parry) forests in the central interior of British Columbia subject to two levels (periodic and annual) of nitrogen(N)-based fertilization. The primary goal of the project was to examine the effects of different fertilizer regimes on aspects of soil chemistry. Specifically, this project was concerned with the impacts of repeated fertilization on: 1) soil carbon (C) and N cycling, and 2) soil base cation (e.g., Ca, Mg & K) availability. Soil and foliar nutrient regimes were quantified throughout the 2008 and 2009 growing seasons using ion-exchange membrane (IEM) plant root simulator (PRS) probes and traditional soil and foliar analyses. Fertilization increased N cycling at all sites, with generally elevated soil and foliar N and significant soil-foliar N relationships in several cases. Nitrate (NO3 -) increased in the fertilized plots in several cases; however, there was minimal evidence of NO3 - leaching. Greater than 90% of fertilizer-N inputs were retained onsite, suggesting these forests are not N-saturated. Soil, tree and total ecosystem C generally increased in response to fertilization, with the spruce sites exhibiting greater C accrual per unit of fertilizer N than the pine sites. Further, significant linear relationships between soil C and N were evident at all sites. At sites with poorly buffered soils (pH < 4), fertilizer treatments generally led to increased soil acidification and decreases in soil and foliar Ca. Decreases in soil Ca may have been due to significant increases in sulfate leaching; whereas foliar Ca decreases appear to be related to compromised uptake systems, potentially from increased soil aluminum. Buffering capacities, rather than forest type, appear to be the best predictor of soil and foliar Ca responses to fertilization. Despite significant changes in soil chemistry at all four sites, it does not appear that current fertilization rates are detrimentally affecting tree growth. / Graduate

Testing site index-site factor relationships for predicting lodgepole pine and interior spruce productivity in central British Columbia

Knowledge of the potential productivity of a tree species becomes especially important when timber production is the primary management objective. However, direct determination of potential productivity is often not possible. For example, in situations where the site is unstocked, stocked with trees unsuitable for productivity measurement, or stocked with species other than the one of interest. In these cases, an indirect estimate using known characteristics of the site itself is required. Such estimates were made using regression to model site index with indirect measures of site quality for lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta) and interior spruce (Picea engelmannii × P. glauca) in the Sub-Boreal Spruce (SBS) zone of central BC. We tested the utility of these productivity relationship models for predicting the site index of lodgepole pine and interior spruce (Kayahara et al. accepted for publication).

Relative susceptibility of interior spruce (Picea glauca x engelmannii engelm.) and lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. var. latifolia engelm.) to Inonotus tomentosus (Fr.) Teng in central British Columbia

Twenty sample plots located in Inonotus tomentosus (Fr.) Teng centers in mixed lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. var. latifolia Engelm.) and interior spruce (Picea glauca x engelmannii Engelm.) stands in central British Columbia were studied to investigate the behaviour of, and variation in host species attacked by the pathogen. The effect of infection on the radial increment of spruce and pine was studied by measuring increment bores. Characteristics of the fungus in culture were studied using isolates obtained from each of the study plots. In some cases, the fungus was found to behave differently on spruce and pine. In pine, advanced necrosis of the cambium and phloem of the roots caused crown thinning and eventual standing mortality. In spruce, decay of the heartwood and inner xylem of the roots caused windfall of the tree, often before expression of noticeable crown symptoms. In both host species studied, spread was commonly observed from infected to healthy, contacting roots. Possible cases of spore inoculation through root wounds were also found. In all plots, pine showed a higher infection level than spruce. Subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa (Hook.) Nutt.) and Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuqa menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) present within the plots were not found to be infected. Infection by I. tomentosus was not found to reduce significantly the basal area increment in pine or spruce. The fungus in culture demonstrated a large amount of variation in growth rate, mycelium color and mat color and texture. Such variation occurred both within and among isolates, and could not be related to the host species from which the isolate was obtained. / Forestry, Faculty of / Graduate

Knowledge of ecological site characteristics and tree growth on different sites is fundamental for silvicultural decisionmaking and planning. With biogeoclimatic ecosystem classification in place in British Columbia, silvicultural management has been given an ecological foundation; however, relationships between growth and site quality have not yet been fully investigated. The purpose of this study was to determine how site conditions within the SBS zone affect the height growth of lodgepole pine (Pl) and interior spruce (Sx).
