Inhalant Use Among Native American Adolescents: A Comparison of Users and Nonusers at Intemountain Intertribal SchoolWingert, John L. 01 May 1982 (has links)
The objective of this study was to investigate a population of identified inhalant users at Intermountain Intertribal School, comparing and contrasting two user groups to a control group of nonusers on a number of selected research variables. The subjects included 42 identified inhalant users. Subjects were further classified into two user groups: one-time users and repeat users, and 20 nonusers. The nonuser group comprised the control group. Each subject was individually interviewed and administered the research and data collection instruments. In addition, other essential information was taken from permanent school records.
A one-way analysis of variance was computed to ascertain the relationship between group membership and 11 selected research variables. A discriminant function analysis was computed to determine differences in the 11 research variables as well as to classify and predict group membership. A descriptive analysis of a questionnaire was also reported.
Statistically significant differences were found among the three research groups on six of the 11 variables. The discriminant function correctly classified 72% of the subjects, and analysis of the group centroids indicated that the greatest distinctions among the groups were between the nonuser group and the repeat user group. The data present a pattern of inhalant use similar to other populations. The importance of early identification and treatment as well as preventative programs is discussed. Implications of the study and recommendations for further research were made.

Previous issue date: 2016-03-31 / This work had as main focus analyze the reconfiguration of ethnic relations in the Upper Rio Negro region, specifically in the city of São Gabriel da Cachoeira, that have changed during the colonizing process due to inclusion of new actors in the regional setting. Military, traders, civil servants, NGOs, national and international researchers, all leaving their mark on the region. Make an analysis based only on anthropological postulates would be enought, however, due to the complexity of the region and the interdisciplinary character of the Graduate Program in Society and Culture in the Amazon we make use of the sociological writings of Max Weber and the Franz Boas, Lévi-Strauss, Mircea Eliade, Roberto Cardoso de Oliveira, Neide Fiori, Robin Wright, Joseph Campbell. Progress in research starting in the chronological narrative of occupation of the Amazon region in order that the reader may be located towards time-space. Secondly we make use of the researcher's experience reports and mythical narratives of the peoples of the upper Rio Negro and especially the Yanomami people in order to show the relevance of such manifestation for the maintenance of ethnic identity of the peoples of the region and demonstrate that even with all the influences and changes in intertribal relations there is a strong presence of cultural element in the life of these people specifically. Methodologically we chose to use the path of ethnography by us seem the most appropriate to help us walk the paths along the traditional peoples of the upper Rio Negro. During the work it became clear that the question of identity today, more than ever, it is important to point to the ethnic groups and ethnic relations are reconfigured over time in order to adapt to the new social needs. Within this reality the mythological world of these people is what helps them to maintain their connection with their ancestors. The search for ways to value the traditions and be part of the ongoing process in the national society also sets up a reality.

Evaluation of the Perceived Usefulness and Effectiveness of Psychoeducational Testing Reports at Intermountain Intertribal SchoolFifield, Marvin Bryce 01 May 1982 (has links)
By law and according to conventional practice. individual psychoeducational testing is an essential part of the identification and placement process of handicapped students. However, evidence reported in the literature suggests that testing results, especially in the form of testing reports, are rarely fully utilized.
This study was conducted at Intermountain Intertribal School at Brigham City, Utah and demonstrated a method of collecting objective data about the use of psychoeducational testing reports as well as the opinions and suggestions of staff members who used them. More specifically, this study documented:
1. Who the primary users of testing reports were and for what purposes the reports were used.
2. The clarity, accuracy, utility and adequacy of the reports as perceived by staff members.
3. The extent to which reports provided users with unique information about the student being evaluated.
4. The specificity, reality, applicability, and usefulness of the report recommendations as perceived by staff members.
In spite of the fact that respondents generally found the reports to be free from jargon and judged the reports to be useful in preparing the student's educational program, results indicate that the testing results were used almost exclusively in the placement of the student and preparation of the student's individual education plan. Specific problems were noted in the writing and editing of the reports and recommendations for increasing the use and usefulness of testing reports are given.
