A Study of Japanese Colonial Education Policies in Taiwan ¡V the Case of Language Textbooks for Elementary School.Chen, Hung-Wen 11 June 2001 (has links)
The major purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between Japanese colonial policies and colonial education, and its impact upon the contents of public elementary school and the language textbooks. Through a variety of analyses, the study intended to discuss the issues relating to the formation and implementation of Japanese colonial educational policies in Taiwan, and to prove the colonial elites to reproduce specific Japanese cultural values, political orientations on the minds of Taiwan¡¦s children in public elementary school.
This study, based upon the result of review of related literature and documents and the analyses of the contents of public school¡¦s language textbooks, traced several controversies in the formation and implementation of Japanese colonial educational policies during the occupation period. To deepen the researchers¡¦ understanding of the process, some in-depth interviews of educated people aged over 70 were also conducted. The final conclusions were reached through the combination of these three steps of explorations and some suggestions have been achieved.
The conclusions of this study were as follows:
¢¹. The implementation of colonial policies is based on the extent of how the colonial education was practiced. The goals and intentions of colonial elites could also be found in the colonial education policies.
¢º. The colonial education policies changed along with the needs of social situations in Taiwan and in Japanese, and perspectives of the key colonial elites.
¢». The key components which the language textbooks were trying to brain wash Taiwan¡¦s children were teaching Japanese language, moral education, knowledge and skills in life, the spirit of Japanese culture, and the development of healthy bodies in students.
¢¼. The contents of language textbooks changed along with the changes of colonial education policies. The perspectives of colonial elites could also be found in the changing of shifts of emphases in the contents of the language textbooks.
¢½. The formation and implementation of colonial educational policies in Taiwan are based on Japan¡¦s colonial policies, and the control of contents and their ideology in language textbooks were the major approaches.
Two suggestions for further study were provided by the researcher as follows¡G
¢¹. Suggestion for related studies
Based upon the conclusions of the study, interested researchers can deepen their understanding of the topic by analyzing textbooks of other subjects, extending the study¡¦s span to include elementary schools in 1941-1945, and conducting more oral history interviews.
¢º. Suggestion for comparative studies
The conclusions of this study could be the starting points for the researchers to conduct a comparative study the contents of school textbooks in Japan, Taiwan, Manchu and Korea during the colonial period.

Rumor mongering: scapegoating techniques for social cohesion and coping among the Japanese-Americans in United States internment camps during World War IIBiggs, Jenny Catherine 10 October 2008 (has links)
This thesis examines the linkages between the verbal response to social stress,
the ostracism of individuals from a social group, and the subsequent increased cohesion
of the remaining members. To write the thesis, I utilized these printed references in the
forms of scholarly research, journals, diaries, and interviews primarily from the Texas
A&M Sterling Evans Library and the online journal resource JSTOR as well as a video
documentary. Previous research into the genres of rumor, identity, and scapegoat
accusations are explicated. Then, these approaches are applied to the rumors told by the
Japanese-Americans who were removed from their homes and sent to internment camps
in the United States during World War II. The internment camps were rife with
scapegoat accusations between the internees whose once unified culture group was
fissured along lines of loyalty to the United States or to Japan. These scapegoat
accusations against fellow internees were an outlet for the stress exerted upon them by
the American government that was not directly combatable. Even processes as complicated as changing social dynamics can be observed through the mechanisms of
rumors and scapegoat accusations.

This thesis uses the angle of linguistic to analyze Japanese loanwords in Taiwanese. From the angle of linguistic this thesis further expounds the type of Japanese loanwords in Taiwanese on three points: 1) Japanese loanwords in Taiwanese have two types: first is type of pronunciation, ¡§transliterlated word¡¨; second is type of writing, ¡§borrowed word¡¨. ¡§Transliterlated word¡¨ have two types: first is ¡§pure transliterlated word¡¨; second is ¡§half transliterlated and paraphrased word¡¨. ¡§Borrowed word¡¨ have four types: first is ¡§self-producted word¡¨; second is ¡§turn borrowed word¡¨; third is ¡§return borrowed word¡¨; last is ¡§turn and return borrowed word¡¨; 2) The most type of Japanese loanwords in Taiwanese is ¡§borrowed word¡¨. It is easier to hear ¡§borrowed word¡¨ than ¡§transliterlated word¡¨, so it is easy for ¡§transliterlated word¡¨ to attract attension, it is difficult for ¡§borrowed word¡¨ to attract attension. 3) The change of Japanese loanwords in Taiwanese performs in pronunciation and meaning. The change of pronunciation performs in consonant, vowel and tones. About the change of meaning, when Japanese vocabularies which have many meaning generally come in Taiwanese, only one or some meanings come in Taiwanese, all meanings do not come in Taiwanese, so when Japanese loanwords come in Taiwanese, the necessary meanings come in Taiwanese, or another meanings are added to original meanings, loanwords do not completely borrow original meanings. These phenomenons perform in amplify, diminish, devolution and accelate. From these points, this thesis researches the form of Japanese loanwords in Taiwanese.

Finally, I find out the fundamental reason behind the deterioration of Sino-Japanese relations in the Koizumi era, and then try further to predict the possible future development about Sino-Japanese relations under the new government, expect to explore the main factors of the impact of historical issues in Sino-Japanese relations.
