This study is an attempt to analyze the novels of Juan Valera y Alcala Galiano, with particular attention to the characterization of the principal figures.

Although some of Zunzunegui's works are not so moralistic in intent as others, it will be seen that each one of them criticizes a particular bad trait in the protagonist which leads to unhappiness or defeat, either for the character himself or for someone close to him.

La biographie de Juan Díez de la Calle, commis du secrétariat de la Nouvelle Espagne du Conseil des Indes à Madrid de 1624 à 1662, contribue à expliquer comment une monarchie composite réussit à gouverner et à conserver ses territoires américains pendant trois siècles. Tout d’abord, l’étude d’un modeste officier et infra-letrado rend compte d’une bourgeoisie castillane travaillant pour l’administration royale en essor. L’univers socioprofessionnel de Juan Díez de la Calle montre l’importance de la famille, des réseaux transatlantiques et du clientélisme dans la marche administrative de l’empire ibérique. Son labeur quotidien éclaire les arcanes du pouvoir : le « maniement des papiers » qui constitue la tâche principale du personnel des Secrétariats rend compte de la pratique administrative et des préoccupations des autorités madrilènes. Ensuite, à cause des fortes contraintes de distance-temps, la circulation de l’information est un enjeu majeur pour la Couronne : connaissances et pouvoir sont indissociables dans l’espace impérial étudié. À ce titre, Díez de la Calle réunit un important corpus documentaire et fait appel à ses informateurs pour rédiger une liste des employés civils et ecclésiastiques de la Couronne aux Indes occidentales. Enfin, ses Noticias Sacras y Reales publiées entre 1645 et 1654 reflètent les représentations de l’espace produites par le Conseil des Indes. L’usage de la liste au détriment de la carte et l’emploi de méthodes pré-statistiques témoignent de la mise en place d’un État moderne. L’idéologie impérialiste et providentialiste transcende l’ensemble de l’œuvre du commis pour placer les Indes occidentales au cœur de la Monarchie catholique. / The biography of Juan Díez de la Calle, clerk of the Secretariat of New Spain of the Council of the Indies from 1624 to 1662, contributes to our knowledge of how a composite monarchy succeeded in governing and preserving its American territories over three centuries. First, observing this modest, infra-letrado official sheds light on how a Castilian bourgeois worked for the developing royal administration. Juan Díez de la Calle’s social and professional universe demonstrates the importance of family, transatlantic networks and client relationships in the Iberian empire’s administration. His daily activities show how power was essentially expressed by the “manipulation of papers”: the main task of the Secretariat’s staff and the primary concern and principal administrative practice of the authorities from Madrid. Due to serious time and distance constraints, the circulation of information was a major stake for the Crown: knowledge and power were inseparable in the imperial space studied here. Díez de la Calle gathered an important body of documentation and called on informants to draft a list of civil employees and clerics of the Crown in the West Indies. His Noticias Sacras y Reales, published between 1645 and 1654, reflect the representation of space produced by the Council of the Indies. The preference of this list, rather than of a map, and his utilization of pre-statistical methodology testify to the construction of a modern State. Imperialist and providential ideology transcends the entire work of the clerk, placing the West Indies in the heart of the Catholic monarchy.
